I don't know about you guys, but since the dawn of quad I have always been intrigued by the "Sampler" disc. Given out as freebies, or with a piece of equipment, many of this type of disc has arrived with a track that had yet to be released, or sometimes one that never got released. Since DVD-Audio seems to have taken a back seat to the marketplace, I created this thread to catalog and display some of the rare and unusual sampler and promo discs that were created to support the format and the hardware that played the format. If you have any discs of this type and would not mind scanning them and sharing them with the membership, that would be GREAT! Please create your scans to be 650...

I'm new around here so forgive me if I've got it wrong, but I believe it's OK to discuss the quality of this sort of thing... I've been lurking around for a little while before taking the plunge, and I'd picked up that some of the previous conversions of WYWH to DVDA have been criticised for having a murky sound quality and also that has been ascribed to the quality of the original LP mix. I think these conversions had been done from the US release which repeats part of SOYCD as a sort of coda at the end of WTTM. I have acquired what is supposed to be a new conversion done in 2009 of the UK SQ LP. Has anyone else heard this? Perhaps it is because I am new, but I have found the...
I remember reading in my old Pink Floyd book by Miles from the 80's that there was an Atom Heart Mother quad released at the time. Alan Parsons was an engineer on it as well. I found an AHM DTS online, and it sounds fairly authentic to me. The mix is different than the stereo mix for sure on the title track. But the one that I am really interested in is Meddle. I also remember reading that a quad mix of Meddle was completed but never released (much like Animals). I came across a Meddle dts as well, but am not sure about it. I haven't listened to it in a while, but it didn't strike me as all that amazing. Sounded like the Animals dts that I have, ie a stereo mix with minimal...
I posted a list a while back of what I managed to get for a dead format in the past few years... Here is my current DVD-A collection. Everything here came off the shelf or from trading with some great folks. I never had to buy online or sell a single disc. My thanks to all. I'll do the same for my SA-CD collection over the weekend. 3 Doors Down – Away From The Sun
Hello all, I recently started getting into "surround "music again, after playing some great DTS and DVD-A discs.I'm quite new to the whole thing and the way the files are built, but I received a disc from a friend with a selfmade surround mix, but it only contains a AUDIO_TS folder with the following files inside: ATS_01_0.BUP, ATS_01_0.IFO, ATS_01_1.AOB, ATS_01_2.AOB AUDIO_PP.IFO AUDIO_SV.BUP AUDIO_SV.IFO
Any news on a DVD-A version? "Porcupine Tree are happy to announce the forthcoming release of their tenth studio album "The Incident". The record is set to be released via Roadrunner Records worldwide on 21st September, as a double CD. The centre-piece is the title track, which takes up the whole of the first disc. The 55-minute work is described as “a slightly surreal song cycle about beginnings and endings and the sense that ‘after this, things will never be the same again’.”

Has anyone listened to it?:alienrob: It has only been around for a few days, so feedback is scarce (the original poster's comments only) It's 1.6Gb in size, so it could potentially not be compressed too much. Hopefully it will be of higher quality that the WYWH DVDA attempt. ....still downloading....:@@:
Maybe I'm misremembering, but... I bought a new 2010 Acura MDX a week and a half ago, and it came with a DVD-A surround sound sampler. One of the tracks on the sampler is Fleetwood Mac's "Monday Morning" from the Fleetwood Mac album. As far as I know, this has never been officially released in surround sound until now. I presumed my memory was faulty at that it must have come from Rumors, which has been released on DVD-A, but I just checked and verified that it's not there. So is this an Acura exclusive?
Of the DVD-A titles I have, 'Hey Nineteen' from "Gaucho". It is a perfect 10 to me. Mix. Sonics. Music. Pick only one gang. We'll do an SA-CD thread later.
The DVD-A of Pet Sounds includes this as a bonus track in surround. The song, if I'm not mistaken, is taken from the earlier album, "Summer Days (And Summer Nights!)". My questions: 1. Does anyone know if true multi-tracks were used to create the surround mix? 2. Does anyone know the reason why this track was included as a bonus for the Pet Sounds DVD-A? (Is there any relation to the Pet Sounds sessions, at all? Or was it just maybe a case of where they had the multitrack tapes there and the space on the disc to mix it just for fun?) fwiw, I was comparing the surround DVD-A version to the (mono?) version on the SDASN album. I prefer the surround version. It maybe doesn't...
A few days ago, while browsing the bins of a used cd store in Paris, my ears were attracted by some music I had already heard, when in my teens, in french Canada. I went to see the clerk, who told me it was a box set from the classic 1970 album Jaune, by french canadian singer Jean-Pierre Ferland, with a CD containing the original and new stereo mixes, a cover version of the album, and ... a DVD-A with hi-rez stereo and M/C mix of the album! Of course, I immediately bought the only used copy the store had in stock, and I got home to spin this one. This album is considered the "Sgt Pepper's" of french Canada... and the comparison holds well, IMHO. The music is very varied,...
I just listened to this for the first time yesterday. It sounded quite impressive, at least from first blush. And, it is Silverline. But . . . I see that the recording was made in 1998, which included remakes of some earlier material from the band, though newly done. Yet nowhere in the credits do I see anything beyond that, such as a surround remix. I know that Stuart Robinson metioned some trick that Silverline used with older titles to present a simulated surround (and those are the ones that made me swear never to purchase Silverline again), but this sounds several cuts above . . I wonder if there was any surround remix, or they just got lucky. The fidelity of the disc is...
I did a search here, in this forum and the polls section, but I could not find any review of the mix style or overall sound quality. Same with the rest of the internet. :( I've HAVE heard one track from this album, which was on a DTS Entertainment sampler disc I no longer own, but was really impressed with the immersive mix and the sound quality.....on that track. I *did* like the music - I don't buy music just because it's in surround form - and still vividly remember hearing a big band at the site of the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle (seemed like a small convention center) back in the early 80s, especially the horn section and drums. And I've heard big band music in stereo but when I...
Doesn't seems right at all to me but... seems a slide is missing from the credits page. I have a black screen with white letters and on the lower right corner can appear three grey bars that have the function "previous - main - next". Anyone else noticed this?

Alright, we have to admit that the format was confusing and was difficult for stores to sell because no one knew what they were, and people wanted MP3 in their iPods instead of HiRez in their houses. That being said.... What happened to the DVD-A Forum, or whomever those folks were. They seemed to cave into the whole DualDisc thing, but half-assed. They never came through with over 100 announced (in various bits and pieces) titles projected to come out. They wasted some effort on the even more insane MVI discs (remember those?). The whole thing just sort of went away. No formal announcement, no "let's go down without a fight". It was just, OK - no more stream of releases. If you look...
Someone here sent me a link, and even the actual updates, for some Pioneer, Oppo & Onkyo players that have issues with playing DVDA/MLP streams on a 16:9 disc. Affected players include the Oppo 971H, the Pioneer 563/565/578 range (all the same firmware) and others that I cannot remember right now. Sadly & stupidly I have not created a backup of my old office system, and the C drive has died & gone to IBM heaven. It would be absolutely wonderful if I could get either the links or even the updates sent to me again, and whoever does this I will owe a serious favour to. Many Thanks in advance
Just in case, as it was only mentioned only one time in the thread "Ear Candy metal in surround?" page 2 last post http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6467&page=2&highlight=Dark+Passion You can still get copies from: http://www.nwshop.fi/productinfo.cfm?tuotenumero=197583&lang=en
Not sure if this is posted anywhere else.. New Lips album due on October 13 and is available in a special edition from their website only which includes a DVD-A. The way I read it, this seems to be the only way to get the Hi-Rez surround DVD. It is not limited edition and it comes in a groovy "fur" case! :D:D:D http://www.flaminglips.com/embryonic/ /\/\
nobody posted this set yet... http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=HDAD2032&utm_source=email&utm_medium=special
This is interesting. Has anyone checked out a 2010 Ford? According to this chart comparing Models of the F-150 Pickup, the Navigation option for the Raptor and FX4 includes a Sony single CD/DVD player that does DVD-Audio!!! (NOTE: It doesn't mention surround, so it could be one of those "stereo" DVD-Audio deals like in the Dodges) Hmmmmmm Have you driven a Ford lately? :D
I thought I'd start a new thread to talk about the music. I know many people are waiting for the official release and may not want to see what others think before giving it a listen themselves.
Wasn't sure whether to list this here or under "Ambisonics". Listened to this today, and thought the sonics were strange. Then I read the card in the case........although this is a DVD-A, it was mastered from an Ambisoinic master, using "the best decode available"! In otherwords, a disceet DVD-Audio made from a matrix Ambisonic (UHJ) master! This was my first time listening to Ambisonics. Not bad for using a non-logic decoder, but the rear channels, although discreet from the fronts seemed to be very phasey. This is on the Nimbus label, that released almost their entire CD & LP catologue in Ambisonics. One thing good I did notice though, the DVD-A is authored so that when you insert...
For several years I've been using my vintage SB Audigy card on my WinXP machine to play DVD-As on my computer. But the old box is about dead and as I consider migrating to a new Vista rig, I wonder if the SB DVD-A playback app will work under Vista. Anyone else gone thru this? Is there a way to play DVD-As under Vista, or is it all over now, baby blue?
