Sounds Of The 70's Orchestra - Quadraphonic Hit Sounds (QL-6968)(1975) (Probably Carson Taylor, waiting for Simon A pictures to verify)

My apologies, I was under the impression that only two titles by the Sounds Of The 70's Orchestra had been released. I have Songs Of The Seventies (QL-6774) and New Songs Of The Seventies (QL-6876), but not QL-6968. I'll keep an eye out for a copy though as I'm a fan of William Loose's work, especially his soundtracks for Russ Meyer's Cherry...& Harry & Raquel and Vixen (yes, I know I'm a dirty old man ;)).

Fascinating, I didn't realize Rubinstein's final cycle of the Beethoven Concerti is available in quad - kind of funny to realize that a pianist born in 1887 would be available in surround sound. The general opinion on the SQ in stereo this cycle is that it's a bit distant and hazy, I wonder if hearing it in quad would clear some of that haze up.

Also, funny to see the review of Masur's Beethoven cycle in quad, which we were of course lucky enough to get on SACD from Pentatone (along with his Brahms cycle too - and rumors that some of his Bruch is next).

Thanks for letting us know about that Sounds Of The 70's album Simon, it's an easy one to mix up due to the similar names and that's why I included the catalog number. I'm somewhat dubious that the 1975 one (QL-6968) even exists because it seems like Capitol was already out of the quad game by then, but who knows.

Man Of La Mancha - Cast Recording (Jim Nabors/Marilyn Horne) (SQ 31237) (1972) - Quadraphonic remix engineers: Don Young & Gary Chicofsky

This was a live recording and was also filmed (Bernstein recorded the same piece a decade earlier with the NY Philharmonic and a decade later in Vienna). It's available on DVD with a DTS soundtrack (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AC5BEI), not sure if this is sourced from the quad?

Did some sleuthing on eBay and got to the bottom of this one:

GUSTAV MAHLER: Symphony No. 2 in c "Resurrection" (Armstrong, Baker, Bernstein, London Symphony, Edinburgh Festival Choir) (M2Q 32681) [2 LP Box]

Quadraphonic remix engineer: Larry Keyes

I suspect the Bernstein/Sibelius Swan of Tuonela is probably our man Larry too (he did the stereo version) but I haven't been able to find a copy to verify.

ubertrout, not sure if you're interested or not but there's a copy of this on eBay at the moment that comes from the record collection of Columbia producer Andrew Kazdin, who did several quad releases (not including this one) for Columbia - I guess they must have furnished him with free copies of their recordings. It looks to be in immaculate condition.

Only hazarding a guess here, but I would suspect that whatever audio is on that DVD is probably sourced from the original broadcast audio, most likely upmixed to 5.1 from the original mono or stereo tracks. Obviously it's possible that they licensed the quad from Columbia but it seems like a lot of expense for a niche release and therefore somewhat unlikely...but I suppose stranger things have happened! Feel free to buy the DVD and be a test subject for us though. ;)

Still to find:

Popular:

Ray Conniff - Alone Again Naturally
Ray Conniff - The Happy Sound of Ray Conniff / The Great Hits of Yesterday (probably Bogert but would like to see a US back cover to verify)
Ray Conniff - Themes from S.W.A.T. and MASH & Others
Rick Derringer - Spring Fever
Percy Faith - In Concert [Japan]
Percy Faith - The Entertainer (probably Bogert like Chinatown but want to verify)
Godspell - Official Soundtrack (Arista AQ-4001) (1976)
Barry Manilow - This One's For You (AQ-4090) (1976)
Johnny Mathis - Love Story [Japan]
Sounds Of The 70's Orchestra - Quadraphonic Hit Sounds (QL-6968)(1975) (Probably Carson Taylor)

Classical:

W.A. MOZART: Concerto No. 1 in B flat for Violin & Orchestra K.207; Concerto No. 3 in G for Violin & Orchestra, K.216 (Zukerman, Barenboim, English Chamber Orchestra) (MQ 32301)

JEAN SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 4 in A, Op. 63; Swan of Tuonela (from Four Legends, Op. 22) (Bernstein/New York Philharmonic) (MQ 32843)

ARNOLD SCHOENBERG: Gurre-Lieder (Napier, Minton, Thomas, Nimsgern, Boulez/BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus) (M2Q 33303) [2 LP Box]

JULES MASSENET: La Navarraise (Popp, Vanzo, Souzay, Almeida/London Symphony; Ambrosian Opera Chorus) (MQ 33506)

Found another hidden one...

Threepenny Opera - Original Cast Recording (PS 34326)(1976) - Quad Mixing Engineer: Don Young

This was one of those single inventory Columbia Masterworks quad releases, most of them don't have a unique quad mixing credit but this one does.

Hi everyone,

Here's one that I've just received (and highly recommend getting).

Marvin, Welch & Farrar - Second Opinion (Regal Zonophone Q4SRZA 8504) from 1972

Many of E.M.I.'s usual suspects are found here (along with studio musician extraordinaire Alan Hawkshaw) and the Quad "supervision" is credited to Jeff Jarrat. Interesting that Alan Parsons is just a tape operator on this one.

Singer/songwriter John Farrar would go on to successfully write and produce for Olivia-Newton John.

A couple more:

Lerner & Loewe ‎– My Fair Lady: Original Cast - 20th Anniversary Production (PS 34197)(1976) - Mixing Engineer: Don Young (single inventory quad release)

Ray Conniff - TV Themes From SWAT, Welcome Back, Happy Days, Mary Tyler Moore, M*A*S*H, Laverne & Shirley & Other TV Themes (1976) - Quadraphonic Sound & Remix Supervision: Warren Vincent / Quadraphonic Remix Engineer: Dick Bogert

Probably the best redundantly titled album since Spinal Tap's 'Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight' :D I can just imagine the record exec saying to the graphic designer 'Make sure people understand it's an album of TV themes! Really hammer it home!' and what you get in return is 'TV Themes' twice in the title of the album and the girl on the cover is watching a little television with Ray Conniff on it. Brilliant.
