Esoteric Recordings is proud to announce the release of a new re-mastered four disc deluxe expanded boxed set limited edition (comprising 3 CDs and a DVD) of SUNBURST FINISH the legendary 1976 album by BE BOP DELUXE.

Recorded in the Autumn of 1975 at Abbey Road studios (with some sessions also taking place at AIR studios in London), SUNBURST FINISH was the third album by Be Bop Deluxe and the first to feature the line-up of BILL NELSON (vocals, guitars, keyboards), CHARLIE TUMAHAI (bass, vocals), ANDY CLARK (keyboards) and SIMON FOX (drums). It was also the first Be-Bop album to be co-produced by BILL NELSON and JOHN LECKIE. An album of immense musical inventiveness and creativity, SUNBURST FINISH was one of the finest albums of its era, a perfect cohesion of ten classic songs written by Bill Nelson (featuring his highly imaginative guitar playing) and a stylised and striking artwork package. Featuring such classic material as ‘Heavenly Homes’, ‘Crying to the Sky’, ‘Sleep that Burns’, ‘Life in the Air Age’, ‘Crystal Gazing’ and ‘Blazing Apostles’, the album also spawned the hit single ‘Ships in the Night’ and launched Be-Bop Deluxe as one of the major breakthrough acts of 1976.

This expanded reissue has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes and features an additional 39 bonus tracks drawn from a stunning new 5.1 surround sound & stereo mixes from the original multi-track tapes by award winning engineer Stephen W. Tayler, previously unreleased out-takes from the album sessions, a BBC Radio “In Concert” performance from January 1976, a rare John Peel Show session from February 1976 (unavailable on CD for over twenty years), along with an unissued and previously unreleased 1976 Harvest Records promotional video for Ships in the Night and a session for BBC TV’s “Old Grey Whistle Test” show from January 1976.

Another highlight of this limited edition boxed set is the lavishly illustrated 68-page book with many previously unseen photographs and an essay of recollections by Bill Nelson. Additionally, the set includes a facsimile of the 1976 Sunburst Finish tour programme, postcards and a replica poster. This special deluxe limited edition boxed set of Sunburst Finish is a fitting tribute to a fine band, the creative vision of Bill Nelson and a wonderful album.

It'll cost me about half that of Bitches Brew (and will arrive quicker!), its not a bad price for 4 discs, so around £11 each, with one in surround (ok probably 5.1 DD so not perfect). I hope they do all the Be Bob Deluxe in surround, all I've had up until now have been my Matrix HJ recordings captured on tape when broadcast by the BBC, and I haven't a Matrix HJ Quad decoder!

! So if this is 66 then you paid about 130? It's going for 86 on Amazon right now (or was, yesterday).
Once I've paid the UK Import Duty and the couriers Tax handling fee it will be heading that way (depends if they decide to add the P&P to the value - they do sometimes!). It will be around £80-£90 so US$104-$116, if I'm lucky less than that, but my copy of BB has just come out of customs going by the tracker so I'll have to wait and see

I don’t want to blame them for trying to make money, and I know it’s a lot better value (well, less bad value) than some boxsets, and I know a lot of others do it... but...

I feel it’s a shame that Cherry Red are going down the “You only get the 5.1 in the expensive box” route with their recent releases (Be Bop, BJH, Chris Squire.) The Hawkwind Warrior 5.1 they released a few years ago is a DVDA in a box set which you can still buy for £18.99.

My guess is that is why they have gone for the 5.1 only in the box set, not enough people bought the stand alone version.

Yes, that’s a possibility. I suspect that HW sold OK, but I can see why less popular acts might not, so I can see their thinking. It’s a difficult choice for them between trying to sell a lot of a ‘cheap’ product or a few of a ‘luxury’ one. It’s just that there are more and more of these expensive sets and with Cherry Red joining the deluxe party it feels like everything from now on will be expensive. It’s a shame they don’t follow the XTC/ King Crimson model.

It is a shame that the XTC/KC option isn't used by all, our hobby would be a lot cheaper.

That's kind of what I meant when I said 'they' but I also appreciate that some people really do want to spend £100 on a box with all the trimmings and I wouldn't want to deprive people of that. Maybe there should be a QQ poll - would you rather buy a 5.1 only set for £15/$20 or a deluxe box for £50/$70 (or whatever the exchange rate averages out at...)

Hope they “remaster” the cover art as well. If you move the see through glass/plastic container around her and the carpet, and make it cleaner so it’s her naked wearing only but heels 👠 holding a guitar burning against a sunburst finish (even removing the band and title from the front) it would have been such an iconic cover. A piece of art
