Reviving an old thread. If I want to hear the 16 Black Jazz titles in quad, and don't have quad vinyl playback, is the only option the Japanese CDs?
What decoder do I need with an Oppo 205?

The first US CD reissues retained the encoding, too. Dolby PL or PLII does a decent job with QS; SurroundMaster is even better. A couple of the titles were also originally released on quad reel, and there are conversions floating around out there...

The discs are encoded in QS, and can be played effectively through any RM or Dolby Pro Logic II decoder. They will give you fine quad sound that way.

Larry Clifton's listings predate Anderson's and yes no Black Jazz titles use QS . The Quadraphonic Discography has incorporated Larry's listed btw.

This statement of mine is nonsensical ! Major edit required !

@Mark Anderson
What I meant to say was that the first 6 on Black Jazz were never encoded .
Larry Clifton's listings predates Mark's and both Mark's and Larry's are correct--NO Black Jazz quads from BJ 01 thru BJ 06.
After those first six they mixed for quad and encoded with QS.
FWIW Larry Clifton's quad listings are incorporated with Mark's Quadraphonic Discography.

So what's in the "Quadraphonic Discography" s/b accurate as it pertains to the BLACK JAZZ quads.
And it's updated regularly.

I've already lost track of where someone (who?) posted a story about the dispute over the latest round of Black Jazz reissues by Real Gone records, supposedly still slated to begin this month. Anyway, here's another story, published today, from NPR Music:
https://www.npr.org/2020/09/22/9153...al-and-spiritual-legacy-of-black-jazz-records
Edit: here's the thread I was trying to find, started by @quadtrade :

Sixteen of the original twenty Black Jazz titles were quad, with a handful released on QR as well as LP. Unfortunately for us surround-o-philes, the Real Gone reissues are being touted as "remastered," which means that unlike previous reissues, the QS encoding will be gone. (Right?)

I've listened to one of the Real Gone Music 's Black Jazz cd's and I think it's retained the QS Encode.
Albeit I don't have the vinyl LP to compare.
Only 7 of the Black Jazz discs listed on this label were ever available in QS FWIW.

The front covers don't contain any quadraphonic information as the originals did , but there is all the original quad info inside the booklet .

Here's mine

BUT WAIT.........

there's MORE !!!

They also have a separate 2CD and LP's of Alice Coltrane's 3 Warner Brothers albums combined , all mixed by Baker Bigsby/Ed Michel. The album is called "Spiritual Eternal".
But Only the first album "Eternity" has been confirmed as QS encoded previously , back in the late 70's or early 80's.
This set has yet to be confirmed , but with the Black Jazz revelation , I'd bet the album tracks from "Eternity" are.

Alice Coltrane-Spiritual Eternal

That's correct.
And we must remember that "remastered " is not "remixing "
From what Dave has said, could the mastering destroy the QS encode, like is what I believe may have happened on the CD of this Willie Dixon CD-

And there also are Hi-Res versions of these available on HDtracks; but I haven't tried decoding any yet (and needing to check qobuz to see if they have any yet.)

Truthfully it shouldn't . The encodes are embedded in the stereo master and extremely difficult to erase.
However they could use something that might damage the encode , but not totally eliminate it.
