Hello,

I was recently asked in another thread:

https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/showthread.php?17654-Coming-Soon-Eddie-Callahan-quot-False-Ego-quot-in-5-1

"What do I use for the upmix?"

Here is a list of the gear that I use in order for the Quad signal path:

  • DVD Player - Pioneer Elite DV-45A
  • Graphic Equalizer & Spectrum Analyzer - Audiosource EQ100
  • SRS Signal Processor - NuReality VHT-200
  • 4-Channel Receiver - Sansui QRX 7001 (restored & modified by Jim Showker)
  • Gain Structure Pad - (Designed and built by Jim Showker)
  • DTS Encoder - Creative Labs DTS-610
  • CD Rewritable Recorder - Tascam CD RW900SL
  • Denon Surround Receiver - AVR-1312
  • Speakers (Fronts & Rears) JBL Northridge E Series E10
  • Speaker (Center) - Yamaha (NS-AC143)
  • Speaker (Subwoofer) - Yamaha YST-SW45

This list is for the center and sub signal paths:

  • DVD Player - Pioneer Elite DV-45A
  • SRS Signal Processor - NuReality VHT-200
  • Kenwood AV Surround Receiver - VR-209
  • Stereo Receiver (Sub channel) - Marantz 2225 (Restored and modified by Jim Showker)
  • Stereo Integrated Amp (Center channel) - Sansui AU-666 (Restored and modified by Jim Showker)

From this point on the signal path is the same as already listed above from the Gain Structure Pad to the respective monitor speakers.

Have you heard of SPEC (software based):

and the Surround Master:

Both do and excellent job of upmixing - I suspect better than the NuReality VHT-200...

Hello,

I know all three do an excellent job in the right hands. I'm a hardware guy. Some artists use oils, some use acrylics, it's all good.

By the way the NuReality is stereo in and stereo out, all it does is pre-process the signal for the variomatrix synth to feast on.

Over the past several years I have been helping surround enthusiasts build their respective libraries in every way possible for me. What others do is great and I applaud them for it. In the long run, if surround is to remain around, it's the collective efforts of the entire community that will allow that to happen.

I am here to help, if you have any interest in the process that I have refined I would be happy to offer any assistance I am capable of providing.

Kind Regards,
David J.
