looks like it might be a way to do production on a free platform.

I used it several years back for audio recording and production. The song "Skeletons Under Cover" from my recent album Disturbing the Universe (2.0/4.0/4.1/5.1 bluray-audio) was exclusively recorded with Ardour on Linux Xubuntu.
Pretty tricky to keep up and running at the time. Had to fuss with Pulse Audio and other service type issues a lot. The bussing could be quite complicated too.
Maybe they've made it friendlier now though.
