It is a good policy to demagnetize, but I've never heard a difference after servicing many (hundreds?) of decks. From what I've read, residual magnetism causes a slow cumulative erasure of high frequencies from the tapes. Important to move the demag slowly far away from the head before turning it off. I try for five feet or so.

More likely, there is a film on the head or as mentioned, fibers lifting the tape away from the head.

I posted a long time ago about noise on mine which I got used. I polished the head with Flitz chrome/fiberglass polish, then many swabs with alcohol to remove that. I don't know of any other product that would be safe to use on a head, others I've seen have more grit than Flitz. This was all about static noise, not muffled noticeably, but I'm just tossing the idea out there.

I will definitely be conservative and go at least 5 feet. Thanks for that. I have read this morning about conflicting ideas about demagnetizing. I will be interested to see what it looks like when I get into the unit. It will be more interesting if demagnetizing really will help. I think it may! We shall see! And by opening it up, I will see if there are cotton fibers or any other issues going on. A simple physical problem would also be welcomed. I like the idea of cleaning well, too. Thanks for tossing out the ideas.

Have you tried cleaning the head again with a q tip after using the cleaning shell. Some of those shells are to be used dry and putting cleaning fluid on the cleaning pad could have created the problem. Wouldn't hurt to try one more time before going to extreme measures.

Hey everyone! It is been a long while since I have posted and I was just going to get on last night to post how great my day was listening to hours an hours of quad! But I got so into the music that I didn’t post. Anyway I’ve had a few days of cleaning and checking foil spices and pads and stuff as I listen and now I have a problem with the sound. The sound coming out now is scratchy on even wonderful 8 tracks I just played the other day. I deoxited all controls of the dbx units, the 9001 and the Akai just to make sure that wasn’t the issue. And let me tell you - this system was playing even cd-4’s so wonderfully Saturday that I couldn’t believe it was still that well-calibrated since the last cd-4 session probably a year ago! And 8 tracks always sound fine.

Now for my confession of my perhaps user-error: I did buy a new homemade 8 track head cleaner in a shell from the 8 track shack folks and I ran it through the Akai several times. I also used a long q-tip thing to wipe off the heads. I had just played several of my more grungy (as far as condition) Jefferson Starship and other Grunt label 8 tracks and just from reinforcing foil splices, the tapes are just the kind that leave your hands dirty. So, I then decided I would put a little of the cleaning liquid solvent used on the long q-tip directly on the 8 track cleaner “tape” part of the cartridge. Well, then the cleaner cart did not automatically cycle through as it had before. So I guess I messed up. So, any idea what is degrading the sound and what might work to bring it back? The discrete-ness is still there - just the sound is scratchy and perhaps muffled or garbled, but I am not sure that is an accurate way to describe it. The lyrics are not as intelligible and it is nowhere near as good as the other day when I played blissfully for hours while working on tapes. It is definitely scratchy sounding. I hope y’all can help!

I seem to have been swallowed up by work and life the last few years and I am going to retire from teaching soon, so I hope to be on this, my favorite forum, more frequently. I have been checking in and am glad most people I remember are still here. That is awesome! Anyway, please advise if you can! Thanks as always! I told a friend just the other day that this whole setup would not have been possible for me to put together without the help,of my friends here. That is always a fact! Thanks in advance! I would love any suggestions.

As others have mentioned, the scratchiness could be a symptom of the heads needing demagnetizing. I have been using the "Hand-D-Mag" since the middle 80s after being introduced to it in the recording studio at which I was an intern. I was taught, as many have already pointed out, the importance of turning the unit off far away from the head, otherwise all the magnetic field you just removed would transfer back to the head. You may not need such an expensive device for an 8-track deck deck (though it wouldn't hurt to have it).

Now when it comes to the muffled sound, that sounds like a dirty head issue. I personally don't have faith in automatic cartridge cleaners. I always clean the heads with a cotton swab soaked in head cleaner solution. I was taught to use solution made specifically for cleaning tape heads and that using simply isopropyl alcohol is not good enough. Also beware that some supposed "head cleaners" are mostly isopropyl alcohol. My current head cleaner of choice is Lasermedia CL-100 which can be found here: http://usrecordingmedia.com/laclheandguc.html . You probably will have to open up your deck in order to clean the heads adequately, especially if you've been only using the cartridge head cleaning method. You'll want to put good pressure on the heads with the cleaning swab in order get the best results.

If you want to go deeper, you may consider pinch roller cleaner like the one here: http://usrecordingmedia.com/larc5twopapi.html. Over time you'll note that rubber pinch rollers accumulate alot of tape emulsion and should be cleaned. What you don't want to do is clean them with alcohol. While isopropyl alcohol is great for cleaning much of the inside of your deck, using it on pinch rollers will make the rubber dry up over time.

Good luck!

Quadgirl, I am glad you are not afraid to go inside and try fixing your deck yourself. I seem to remember reading other people having issues with noise in the same tape deck. Was the noise sudden? Did it start over time and maybe not get noticed? The 3 repairs I seem to remember where one person needing to ground either the head or the contact switch (where the foil changes tracks), possibly the motor has developed a fault that is causing electrical interference, and lastly, the worst as it requires a tech, is that you have developed noisy transistors. The first you can experiment with the deck open by taking a short piece of wire and touch the one end to the top of your head while the tape is playing and touch the other end to the chassis. The second can be checked while playing a tape and try slowing the motor shaft and see if the noise changes. The third I can't help with. Just don't touch near the circuit boards while you try my suggestions. As I learnedin grade 10 electronics class, the first commandment is when working near open voltage, keep one hand in your pocket, and the other mindfully utilised. Good Luck!

Thanks for that. I just got back in town and will try this first.

Thanks! I actually went ahead and ordered that Han-D-Mag and the two products you mentioned. They arrived while I was out of town. When jet lag eases, I am going to open up the unit and follow directions with d-mag and make sure the heads are cleaned properly. I will report back when I have done this! Thanks for the help. If you have any other tips and tricks for using Han-D-Mag, p,ease advise. Thanks again!

Thanks Circular Vibes. It did happen suddenly and not gradually - fine one day, not, the next day. I will look into these suggestions when I take the machine to the kitchen table to see what might be going on and hopefully find that cleaning and demagnetizing works. Then I will check carefully using your ideas. And don’t worry - I have great respect for electricity!

Hi, Zabble, Jon, Mike, Circular Vibes, Clint Eastwood, Snood, Phillip Spinner, Zmacman and others!

I appreciate your help in advising on my cr-8–dss. I actually ordered and received the han-d-mag and my rubber cleaner and head cleaners. I opened up my other technics rs 858 dus deck first since it has been sitting under my bed and I wouldn’t have to uncable it and I could get familiar with han-d-mag. It was clean on the inside and who knew how much easier to access! I then put it in my system and its heads are not as well-aligned, but it will do until I feel like dabbling into head alignment. I will say that it spits carts out fast when trying to play to the splice and catch it before it breaks on my last 20 or so carts that have yet to be fixed with new foil. So, then I got the manual from Hi-Fi Engine on my ipad and followed directions (it was for the “ss” model, not “dss” but as far as I can tell, the only physical difference was absence of the “tone” knob. So here goes:

What a difficult way to get in! The unit was one that Quadbob was to have restored in 2006 (I labeled it at the time). But I guess that did not involve replacing the spongy stuff between faceplate and internal stuff. Luckily I just scraped the loose stuff off and none got in the deck. But I was not about to try to remove the leads and such from the meters, so sort of had the faceplate attached. But, unlike the technics, I could not access to within a quarter inch the heads (for demagnetizing). I will talk about that in a moment. So, the main head was very clean, but the capstan was not. I must have cleaned it with 50 long q-tips with head cleaner and then a brass polisher good for stainless steel and other metals. I then used a scotchbright pad I cut and was able to reach the capstan with using some reverse scissors things I found in a computer type tool package I have. Still, after all that, I cannot make that thing shiny, but there is no loose tape or fibers. I have not put the unit back in my system to test yet, but I have questions about the demagnetizing process. I watched probably hours of youtube videos about this and I knew to go very slow and approach from a couple of feet away, go slow and then go back very slowly before unplugging. Here was the surprise - in the technics deck, it had a fairly strong magnetic pull (the unit) pulling the han-d-mag to different parts and the chassis. Still, I was able in that unit to get close to the head and capstan. I did not know about the pull and it was a bit scary and I know the rubber tip did get sucked onto parts before I wrestled it away. But, then, in the akai, wow what a magnetic pull! It did clang on the parts as I tried to get at least near the head and capstan, so it was jerky motion, not smooth and no way to be smooth even if I had big muscles! I still tried to back away very slowly to avoid magnetizing everything. And I did in both cases back away about two feet.

So, my questions are:
1. What does that mean? In the videos, nobody showed the pull of the head of the demagnetizer so strongly. I hope that was normal, but both decks had the pull to the chassis, just the akai was stronger.
2. How bad it it to have a clean capstan, but not shiny?
3. If the unit does not perform well when I hook it up, how do y’all feel about technics? That deck has not been services]dmand Imhave to turn the volume on my 9001 up more. And when I went to raise the level on one of the rear channels using the tecnics knob, it made a loud hiss, loud! So I backed it off. Not sure if that is a sign of an issue. And hopefully the akai will play well. I hate that I reassembled it, but did not take pictures. Anyway, I know I have one more deck in storage and it may be an akai - I honestly cannot remember because at one time I had four, but I gave one away (to my chagrin, the guy, my mom;s neighbor, never even got into quad yet kept my nice gesture to help somebody and he is wealthy! Has four cars, expensive ones - I guess I should ask for it back since my mom;smhusband won’t go over and ask for me). In my youtube watching, I came across Barry who has great credentials and made lots of helpful videos. He, though, does not recommend the akai units because of their proprietary parts being hard to get. He likes, for quad decks, the technics. Do y’all have opinions here? I would love to know.

So, I love my quad and I did grow up buying 8 tracks (stereo) complements of Columbis House record and tape club!) and I threw them out the window of my ‘69 Nova I had in 1979 as a sophomore in high school. Never even knew about quad until the 80s. And I have fixed 90% of my tapes and noted it on them so I can just plug and play. I love vinyl, too and have that part of my system running great with my nice AT20ss cart, and vinyl sounds clearer, but I do not mind the “darker” sort of sound of 8 tracks. I do want this to work and I wish I had better skills. Is there anyone who does thorough work to make a more pristine-playing, well-aligned restoration of these that you would recommend? I do not want to pay and have many future repairs and I will only feed it good tapes. I may consider having one of mine done up right, but which one if I do and is there someone who does truly understand quad decks well? In the meantime, I will enjou]y the technics for a bit so I can compare when I put the akai back in. And school starts next week, which irritates my plan, but I will only be doing a long-term sub position which will pay my insurance for the year and then I will be officially retired and immerse myself back in my hobby again! Yay! Thanks in advancemto any and all who can help with any of my questions or offer further assistance. I can take it if you have to criticize my learning curve on electronics! I am fascinated by both sound and music! That is, I love to try to tinker and then my gemini self will vascilate back to only wanting to listen and not mess with equipment. I mainly did not want to get electrocuted and I did meet that goal and I am proud of what I have done here. I can be careful and will study and follow directions, but I had no idea that the magnetic pull of the de-magnetizer would be a thing, or so strong of a thing!

My final comment is this: I have never had full confidence that my system sounds great. I realized in reflecting these past weeks that we have a great community here. I think I get more plugged into life here than my real life sometimes. This interests me and hardly anyone I know even understands when I tell them they are looking a Q8’s Not “oh, I remember these” regular 8 tracks or regular albums. And they do not “get” what discrete means and so I do not try to share music listening except with just a few because then they just want background music. And I remembered years ago that Mike visited. I wonder if people here do travel and ask to visit each other? I just got back from Vegas (I do not gamble or drink - went to see Stevie wonder and the fabulous Michael Jackson One Cirque du Soleil program) and I wish I had thought to see if there was a quad person who lived there who would let me hear their system. I also went to Philly for a wedding this summer and may have missed a chance. Do people visit? As a woman, I would probably bring a friend and “vet” anyone I was not familiar with, but I would love a tour of quad homes in the US and abroad! Would that not make awesome travel experiences! I thinks so. Jon - you don’t want to start a quad travel forum do you?!😜. Or a quad vrbo or quad airb&B? My home is too small for sleepovers, but really - visits to quad homes to live and learn would be cool! Okay, I have written a book with two fingers on my ipad. I look forward to any responses!

I'm not sure I've ever seen a shiny capstan. I <think> the drive surface of them is etched to grip, usually has a dull look but there should be no oxide on it. I usually find a line of goo above and/or below the tape drive area and careful not to drip cleaner into the where the shaft meets the bearings.

Wow. You are younger than what I had thought, so that's a good thing, kid. lol. Always enjoyed your posts about working in the retail electronics end of the business.

Visiting? I've never known personally anyone else local who was into any type of surround sound, even back when I lived "in the city". Although I had a chance to visit a like-minded group of folks some years back before I retired, my work schedule would not allow.

I have not been a frequent poster here until lately, but I guess in the end we all go to home.

You must have her confused with someone else. Laura is a school teacher … and she is a lovely person.

Hi there! Glad I am a young’un! But alas, you may have me mixed up with QuadLinda as I have never worked in retail. Always just been a teacher. No worries! And it does remind me that I was hoping she would also chime in.

Sorry about the mixup! My apologies! ....and nothing at all wrong with being "just a teacher". I respect what you do.

I think a few people have managed to meet in person. RustyandI and Chucky-(of Involve Audio) met during the development the Surround Master and doing A/B comparisons of equipment. I met ogrequad in person, but had already been going to see his band in person for many years before I discovered he was on QQ. I also believe that I might have both JonUrban and ArmyOfQuad within a reasonable driving distance from where I am now. And I regret not realizing that there's a QQ'er somewhere in Utah, while I was still living there.

Well Jon Urban might not be in the great State of Mass much longer....the rumor is that Acura was so impressed with Jon's 300 emails concerning the ELS Surround System that they have hired him to work on the next ELS version...the other rumor was that Jon was offered the job in order to stop him from sending so many emails...could you imagine Jon working along side of Elliot Scheiner...and Jon mentioning unreleased Quad releases every day...that would be fun:unsure:..at least for us it would be fun:LOL:
