I've been knocking around the idea of adding a 4 channel amp to my Kenwood car stereo, along with an Involve Evaluation decoder module. That would be one incredible sounding setup. Of course, it's all fantasy right now...

I've got this one in my old Ford Focus:

Dolby 5.1, DTS and DVD-Audio among others. Not too powerful but great sound. You can configure volume and distance for each speaker. 7 band equalizer but it has one problem, if you listen to a 5.1 source the equalizer gets desactivated and the sound is too flat. So I put one of this under the seat:

An active woofer and everything was OK. So I can listen to almost all my DVD-Video/Audio collection, DTS-CDs... In my other car, I can play DVDs but not surround, so I have some DVDs full with mp3s and a couple of USB memories.

The pity is that's the Focus (with the surround JVC player) is the car I use for going everyday to my work place and it has a lot of kilometers (330.000, more than 200.000 miles) so it's time to change it. I will replace it by a Toyota Corolla with android auto/apple car-play and I cross my fingers so I can find any software compatible with flac 5.1. In fact I was thinking about open a topic here asking if anybody has tested something like that.
