I had the chance to check out a few tracks from The Collection the other night. It's pretty much what you expect from AF - if you think you'll like it, you definitely will. It shows off many different styles of quad mixing, from "you are there" for Miles Davis (except the tape echo on the trumpet) to the swirly effects on Santana and the O-Jays. You've really got to be a 70s soul and fusion fan to enjoy the music. I am, so this works for me.

Miles Runs The Voodoo Down is pretty darn great because the stereo mix is so dense. It's nice to get the keyboards separated.

Similarly, the Jeff Beck track is nice in surround so you can hear he's got 3-4 guitars playing the melody in unison.

I'll put something more detailed in the poll when I have a chance to hear it all the way through.

I haven't played it end to end, just sampled the tracks.
And please bear in mind I was listening in stereo.

It struck me as a bit of a mixed bag which I suppose is to be expected on a comp.
Some tracks sound great (Harold Melvin, Herbie) others not so much.
The O'Jays and Isley tracks sound better on the Sony SACDs IMO.

As with all AF Discs it will take a couple of listens to decide the "score"

Well, that's a disappointment.... maybe, but didn't Sony get the quad mix mixed up a bit in the channels or was that just a rumour?

The Rang did specify, Cboy, that he listened to the compilation in STEREO so I would await assessment of the Collection in QUAD before drawing conclusions.

Looks like I'll be getting stuck with 3 of these now due to various screw-ups and orders not getting cancelled as requested.

I have just played my copy
2 tracks I find not very good

Friends of Distinction
I felt that it was very one sided
The vocals seemed all on one side

Peter Gun

To me watching on the Scope and listening
It looked like a CD4 Record and one side had a carrier drop out
it went from a mono to Left front to left rear
so on the scope it gave a side ways Y look
I am not saying that it is a CD4 record but it just looked that way
Did any else find this?

All the other tracks gave a good Quad look

Just received this title yesterday and couldn't wait to give it a spin. Interesting mix of songs. "Shining Star" by Earth, Wind & Fire, "Wake Up Everybody" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" by Miles Davis make one pine for the complete albums in Quad SACD. Of course Bob Dylan, Santana and Blue Oyster Cult would be nice as well. More great tracks here.

Yes, the mastering is much better and true for The O’Jays and The Isley Brothers with proper track assignments as well, than the Sony SACDs from the 2000s. The Jeff Beck Group and The Mahavishnu Orchestra tracks here are still available as full Quad titles on SACD by Audio Fidelity.

That's my understanding from trying to remember what I've read here at QQ in the past. I'll have to breakout the Sony SACDs to see what, if anything was wrong there. But on this disc, sounds good to me.

EDIT: Check this, Isley Brothers - 3 + 3 (SACD)

Swapped rears leading to diagonal pans (I think?)

...anyway, will give these two tracks on this new AF Collection SACD a more thorough listen at some point, hopefully tomorrow.. meantime off to >>> BED! :smokin

Bedit! I mean, EDIT! Just saw your edit, OQG.. Yes that's it, by Jove!
Goodnight 'n Quad bless :upthumb

Channel assignment in the O'Jays' For The Love Of Money Quad is the same in this new AF Collection as both the old Sony SACD and the SQ vinyl Surround Master decode.

Intro: Bouncing bass line pans from FL > FR > SL > SR
Followed by "For The Love Of Money" vocal refrain, which very neatly "swooshes" clockwise thus: FL > FR > SR > SL

Edit: Couple more observations..

1.) AF SACD seems to run at a slightly slower speed than the old Sony SACD (despite AF clocking in at 7:28 and old Sony at 7:29... will double check this down the line),

2.) Old Sony SACD is MUCH louder and sounds like it's been EQ'd very differently, much more treble and more bass on the old Sony., AF sounds flat by comparison.. it probably is?

Perhaps this is why the Sony sounds faster to my ears? The Sony has more punch, more immediacy, more activity in the top end. The Sony's probably compressed and EQ'd to hell.. still, I think I prefer it to the AF, it's more exciting and engaging somehow.

Ok, so this is what I'm hearing in the 4 x Channels in the Isleys' "That Lady" as on the AF Collection SACD (among other instruments etc):

FL = Bass, Drums (Cymbals, Hi-Hat, Snare), Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Lead electric guitar
FR = Bass, Drums (Toms, Kick), Lead Vocals, Backing Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Piano/Keys,
SR = Congas, Backing Vocals, Lead electric guitar
SL = Lead Vocal reverb, Lead guitar reverb, 2nd guitar (a kinda "wocka-chocka" riff), Piano/Keys,

So, as you can see the most prominent instrument throughout, the distinctive Lead guitar diagonally pans across the room from Front Left to Surround Right, as do the piano/keys pan diagonally opposite from Front Right to Surround Left.

This diagonal panning is the same as the old Sony SACD (and the SQ LP when decoded by the Surround Master).

Also, this track on the Sony SACD is MUCH louder than the AF SACD, seemingly with different EQ (sounds like more Bass and Treble on the old Sony compared to the AF to me).

I should add, none of this is scientific wrt the Channel assignments, it is just based on my going upto each speaker in turn again and again and through the same passages in the same track with those elements like when the BVs kick in and so on.. but those instruments etc are pretty clear in those channels.

It is a bit of a weird mix really, with the backing vocals all down the right hand side in both front right and rear right.. and the main instrument that gives it its distinctive sound (Ernie's lead electric guitar) panning across the room diagonally...

Its head-scratching to me when you've got a Quad mix that does this...
Lead guitar = Front Left & Surround Right,
Piano/Keys = Front Right & Surround Left,
Backing Vocals = Front Right & Surround Right

..Funky!

(Ps. I still LOVE the Isley Quad, quirks and all.. but when the Harold Melvin track kicks in straight after That Lady on this AF compilation, you can really hear the superiority of the Harold Melvin Quad mix, imho.. ..fingers crossed AF can get the Quad of the "Wake Up Everybody" album out on Surround SACD someday..)

It's even on Amazon

Reminds me of BS&T Greatest Hits. Same problem.

C~boy, I just think AF is starting to retreat from QUAD releases and felt it wasn't worth the extra licensing/mastering fee to include the 4.0, especially since it included only 4 tracks that weren't on the first two BS&T QUAD releases. Remember the complaints lodged against The Collection........wasn't it 6 tracks that were previously released on other AF QUAD SACDs?
