I think I understand, but tell me if I'm missing something . . .

Any DTS-encoded disc (CD, LD, DVD) needs a decoder to permit playback. In the case of CD players and LD players, this would require the digital output of the player to be fed into a surround processor with DTS decoding. In the case of some later generation DVD players (which have onboard decoding) you could get away with feeding it out of the 5.1 analog outputs, although feeding it from the player's digital output to a properly-equipped surround decoder remains an option. It's the latter that I intend on doing.

My question really had to do with the process by which I would now be able to listen to a quad recording in DTS. "Theoretically," that means that an analog version was then digitized into DTS, permitting the subsequent playback without any of the decoding equipment that one would need to play the original quad recording.

In other words, all I need is the same setup that I need (and have) to play any DTS-encoded disc.

Is this right?

Thanks,

Nick

You are correct SIR! :D
Yes, the disc I sent you is just that. A dts conversion of the quad, digitized in d.t.s. format and is like any other dts disc except it's a cdr! Now thatall that's out of the way , I hope you get a chance to take a good listen to it . I feel it's the way they intended back in the day when they did it and as far as whatit could still be I know Alan Parsons had said given the chance to do it again he had some ideas for it using todays technology, and would like to have been involved with it. A Upon reading the Giuthre note he used the stereo image not the quad image as a basis for the mix. That's fine for the stereo remix but not the surround quad mix . If they used the Quad mix it would be a different story all together I fell.. Never know now ...unless ( wishfull thinking ) some how we get A.P. to do a DVD-A remix faithfull to the quad mix ! then I'd be tickled PINK ..:rollin:
:smokin: Rob

Nick,
Feel free to start hammering. My apologies! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT="">

No wood or nails called for, Dave. I'm glad you posted, because frankly I had no idea how many different sounds were going on in that cut. I especially had no idea that were sounds of tearing paper.

I'm looking forward to listening to the disc that Rob sent. Best regards,

Nick

Nick, You really should wait for the disc from Tab. ;)

My secretary opens my mail. I've received two different discs. The first was one in a jewel-case that had a cover. It is identified as the "SQ" version of the quad mix, in DTS.

The second one, which I received today, is in a white CD-Rom envelope, which has the words "matrixquad" on it (I won't say what else, because I don't want identities divulged).

I listened to the SQ version last night. I don't want to comment yet, but I would like to know which is which. I will be "discreet" (as opposed to "discrete").

Thanks,

Nick

Go with the one with the Texas post mark! ;)

:-jon

P.S. Make sure you listen closely to the mix on US AND THEM. The sax will be in the front left instead of center, but it will be discrete as heck. If you isolate that channel, you can hear the guy breath! That's not the best part, though. That is just how you can tell if it is the correct mix.

Jon I sent him the right one the sq was just cover art and I used the wrong one, when I printed the insert, but it's the RIGHT ONE!
