And you're posting this in the DVD-A forum just to rub it in?

Not trying to rub it in. Just thought the DVD-A guys would be interested. A lot of us have the capability to play both formats now so it is a moot point.

Okay, I moved the thread to a more appropriate area. FYI, we should probably try to abstain from cross-posting. We're a small enough board that it really isn't necessary.

Anyway, I'll just cut and paste my response to this review from the Tofu Hut, er, I mean the Steve Hoffman forum :p

------------------------

That is a very interesting review but DSOTM in surround is certainly not something "shiny and new". Also, the review contains one glaring error: The quadraphonic version of DSOTM was released in 1973, not 1975. Perhaps they are referring to the "Four Sides of the Moon" Alan Parsons article published by Studio Sound magazine in 1975.

I think it is unfortunate that they did not compare the new surround mix to the original. I assume that they avoided doing this to be the first out of the gate with their review. A follow-up review is promised, but comparing the new hi-rez mix to the original via an SQ LP really puts the original at a disadvantage.

At any rate, I am sitting on pins and needles waiting for the opportunity to do the comparison myself. I have my copy pre-ordered through Acoustic Sounds, but no peep from them as of yet!

High rez will be great but as far as his description goes that's what we have been enjoying all along. Comparing will be very interesting!

Ok, I'm sorry if I misread your intentions. I can understand your enthusiasm & desire to share info, but it's kind of a sore point for those who were hoping for another format.

I am just glad to see titles like this coming out in either of the 2 formats. I started with DVD-A about 6 months ago and I still think it has the edge both in sound quality and flexibility. But this title should be interesting..........

Agreed. It's one title that makes a strong case for universal players. The uncertainty over future releases only enhances that approach.

Just received the Dark Side of the Moon SACD earlier today. Checked the 5.1 Surround track - it's a new mix and they do a nice job of using the sound field. Thumbs up.

Still haven't found an early copy. Can't wait till tomorrow. If you give it a thumbs up it must be good.

My opinion of the the new DSOTM...
I got mine Monday, and listened to it very carefully and thought the sound is EXCELLENT, But , ..... The Parsons Mix Is BETTER PERIOD . End of stament .. Any Colour, and US and Them ... Big let down they sound like the stereo image ...
That was the point of the effects in those to go up up up and down , down , and around not there! sorry it just doesn't cut it for me, and all is lost it sounds like stereo BLAH! :( LET Alan Parsons Do It on DVD-A and let's see the REAL MIX The way it was with some reworking of the center channel and sub , I know he Had some great Ideas for this and I know it would be more faithful to the quad with the center and subs thrown in for more effect , and good measure .. That's it no go for me The best was not there to hear !

Rob,

Take the center and the sub, and add it to the fronts and rears of the AP mix. Make a DTS Frankenstien CD!

At least, you can add the sub channel and preserve all of the direction information. You just have to sync then up.

HA HAHA! I thought of that last night!:rollin: !
To funny! :rollin: !
I had such high hopes for this but .... Well it just let me down!
Did you notice the time was just under 43:00 min, 42:59
I'm going to try a resync and see how it sounds!
By the Way, The Oz meets Floyd , with full 5.1 DSOTM and WYWH 5.1 and The WALL tracks and Pigs on the Wing 1+2 from Animals all in 5.1 and AC3, dts is done and it plays on P.C. And dvd-v players. The Guy in Utah did a GREAT job rendering it to dvd-v and SOUNDS AWSOME . I remastered everything to 48Khz, SYNC is PERFECT! WOW it was better than I had imagined it would be! Better than any of those videos and in full 5.1 surround sound AC3 and dts.
I just need to get a DVD burner and get them to disc . I modified the graphics he sent it to me in and Touched it up a bit but the package and labels is all done and ready to go, just need to burn the copies and go!

I bought DSOTM --"the SACD" at my local Best Buy today (Chgo). I couldn't find it amongst the special rack of SACD discs located in the "Multi-Channel" section, but rather found it in the regular alphabetical CD section.

Next to the special section at Best Buy labeled "Multi-Channel", were CD players. Next to CD players were DVD and DVD-A players. Would you expect there to be one, just ONE Super Audio CD player to buy? Of course, this is the perfect opportunity to exploit the new format!
Was there one to buy? Why no. No, not one!
I have the 5.1 DSOTM disc, but I have no capabilities to play it.

At least I have all of your reviews to keep me from going insane.

Thank you.

I was in a few stores and askrd around about the New Floyd and got strange looks back from ALL to whom I asked ! It seems like no one knows anything about it and no seems to care either. These Stores are all missing the the chance to boost there lagging sales if they just got on the stick!
But the Big Wigs have no clue what the heck they are doing!
UGH! Total Stupidity! :(

In my local BestBuy the discs that have any CD layer at all end up in the CD section and the discs that only have an SACD layer are in the SACD section near the hardware and the DVD-A discs are in the music section at the end of the DVD-V music discs. This is the way it goes and they very seldom get it wrong. Regarding SACD players, the local BestBuy has 3 units of a Sony 650 left. That is all they have in stock for SACD and they have had these same 3 units for months. That is sad. You have to go to the higher end audio stores to get the good stuff.
