Over the years I have received many questions about some titles that were reported in "Quad Incorporated." as
{The titles above were released only in quad, no stereo version known}.
The majority of the questions were in reference to a few Ovation label recordings, most notably being PAUL HORN - And the Concert Ensemble. Ovation OVQD-1405 (QS).
A while back I added a correction to the Quad Discography for the Paul Horn title
{The title above had been reported in 1979 by the publication "Quad
Incorporated" to only be in quad, with no stereo version known.
This album was actually released in 1970 in stereo as No. OV/14-05 with
a green label and number 956C-1405 on the label. Quad Incorporated also
reported the title was "originally released in EV encoding. Version
marked as SQ or QS may actually be EV. This title may have been
originally released in EV and remastered for QS".
If this is true it might only apply to albums with the OVQD prefix.}
I was wondering how many other titles that the quad community believes to be released on the Ovation label prior to quad matrixed vinyl being issued? I would like to get a common consensus so that the discography can be updated.
We certainly know that as the years have gone by and the invention of the compact disc, demise of the CD-4 format, etc. that some titles may have been released in a stereo format. In other cases the recording could be in a quad matrix format but only identified in stereo.
I recently received another question from a vinyl seller in regards to
HARVEY MANDEL - Get Off in Chicago. Ovation OVQD-1415 (QS).
He stated that he sold a Canadian copy that was merely labeled stereo and that listening through his Sansui system that "either the quad effect is so subtle, I couldn't detect it, or it was a stereo mix with no quad encoding"
I belive my copy of this title is also labeled as stereo and does not have the QD in the catalog number.
Any comments are appreciated.
