Over the years I have received many questions about some titles that were reported in "Quad Incorporated." as
{The titles above were released only in quad, no stereo version known}.
The majority of the questions were in reference to a few Ovation label recordings, most notably being PAUL HORN - And the Concert Ensemble. Ovation OVQD-1405 (QS).

A while back I added a correction to the Quad Discography for the Paul Horn title
{The title above had been reported in 1979 by the publication "Quad
Incorporated" to only be in quad, with no stereo version known.
This album was actually released in 1970 in stereo as No. OV/14-05 with
a green label and number 956C-1405 on the label. Quad Incorporated also
reported the title was "originally released in EV encoding. Version
marked as SQ or QS may actually be EV. This title may have been
originally released in EV and remastered for QS".
If this is true it might only apply to albums with the OVQD prefix.}

I was wondering how many other titles that the quad community believes to be released on the Ovation label prior to quad matrixed vinyl being issued? I would like to get a common consensus so that the discography can be updated.

We certainly know that as the years have gone by and the invention of the compact disc, demise of the CD-4 format, etc. that some titles may have been released in a stereo format. In other cases the recording could be in a quad matrix format but only identified in stereo.

I recently received another question from a vinyl seller in regards to
HARVEY MANDEL - Get Off in Chicago. Ovation OVQD-1415 (QS).
He stated that he sold a Canadian copy that was merely labeled stereo and that listening through his Sansui system that "either the quad effect is so subtle, I couldn't detect it, or it was a stereo mix with no quad encoding"

I belive my copy of this title is also labeled as stereo and does not have the QD in the catalog number.

Any comments are appreciated.

What about the John Lee Hooker album "Never Get outta these Blues Alive" ?

I have a friend who is an obsessive blues fanatic and when I showed him my Q8 of that album, he nearly went ape. A bunch of songs he'd heard JLH recorded but as far as he was concerned, were left "in the can".

can you describe the differences? labels, sound?
give us all your input and opinion.

Speaking of quad only releases an italian band recorded one title in QS in 1974
http://www.italianprog.com/a_salis.htm
You can clearly see QS logo on "Seduto sull'alba a guardare" LP
Their second press (with a brown cover) has the same mix on it.
I knew Salis personally, he lives only few miles form me and he came home few times.
I listen to this record carefully but, though it is stated to be QS, I can hear only ambience in the rears.
Nice music anyway

Around 1974 EMI in the UK switched its classical LP releases to SQ quadraphonic only. Please see the attached links to two versions of Andre Previn's Music Night albums, which were a spin off from his successful BBC TV series. There is no indication on the front cover, but I have the first of these and it is definitely SQ.

I've no idea how many releases there were or when EMI stopped producing these SQ only discs. There is a reasonable chance that if any have been released on CD that they are in SQ too.

Thanks for the info. This was a topic of discussion a few years ago and is documented on the quad rumors page

* SLS951 (SQ) WAGNER: Die Meistersinger Von Nurembourg (Karajan)
(England)
{EMI literature states that the above was recorded in "state of the art
quadraphonic sound". The Quadraphonic Record Center Catalog - 2nd Ed.,
published by Beggers Banquet/London 1976 Mentions "Credit must be given
to EMI who are issuing all their new classical recordings in SQ. From
the view point of public acceptance of quadro, however, they are
maintaining a low profile on this and many retailers stocking EMI
classics are unaware that they are stocking SQ records".
Some quad collectors think this might be an unmarked Quad recording
after close examination of the record grooves and using a quad display
scope and a Tate II SQ decoder for as good as a verification you are
going to get without documentation from EMI.}

A quad collector had some additional comments at the link below

Harvey Mandel - Get Off In Chicago.
I saw a copy on ebay with the gold EV sticker quad on from and was numbered OV/14-15. I don't have that version, so can't elaborate further.
I do have a later pressing (thin vinyl, late '80, '90s?) that is also numbered
OV/14-15, no mention of quad anywhere, no sticker ever was on front of this one.
The QS quad version I have says QS quad on the back cover, and does say quad on the front, numbered OVQD/1415.
Non-quad version has master number A4RS-2445 for side 1 and A4RS-2546 for side 2, these numbers are etched in the runout area. No master numbers on quad version.

Here is scan of the labels.

For example, song 2 on side 1 is definitely a different mix. The initial guitar solo goes until the first break on quad version, shorter on non-quad version. Guitar parts at end of song is also different. Intro guitar solo on quad version swirls around, non-quad version does not.
