I've had my oppo 95 a little over a month now and It's still working as it's suppose to. It plays every disk that I put in it without a hitch. The 5.1 analog output is superb sounding to say the least. For now.. I can honestly say that I'm a happy camper. Just hope that I never have any problems with it at all.. for life.

FYI: There's a knew Public Beta Test Version firmware out that you definitely should try. I'm happy it plays iso files now.

Thanks for the heads up on the patch. I'm still waiting on an update so that the oppo plays (QUAD) .wav from a hard drive via sata and not just from discs.

I gave the oppo company a new idea for STEREO and they grabbed it. Lets hope that they follow thru with it. Don't really want to say just yet what the idea consists of, but it's something that hasn't been tried yet by anyone.

I play my Quad files via iso on the player just fine.
Also, multi-channel file play is enabled but I cannot remember what file types, off the top of my head.

Yeah.. but not from a hard drive. Even oppo support says that no oppo model can play Quad .wav from a hard drive via sata. It will play these files, but only if they're burned to disc.

I'm not sure when they told you that but I can verify that I do, indeed, play quad iso files from my hard drive attached via usb to the player.
Also, it works via a flash drive.

Are you reading my messages correctly? I said VIA SATA not USB. I never mentioned USB.

I just called oppo and they said that the player can't play DVD audio.iso files yet.. via sata. It will only play them from a disc. So you must have a special player that doesn't exists or the techs over at oppo don't know what they're doing.

I tried it on mine and it's not playing them either via sata or usb from a hard drive.

Oh well.. So ends this conversation!

Hint: Try choosing "Movies" instead of "Music" when trying to play those particular files.

And, sorry, I don't have access to an eSATA capable drive. So, I didn't know there was a difference.

Yeah.. I just got done calling oppo again and the guy said that they are going to try and fix that problem in an update patch so that the DVD audio.iso files will be recognized via eSata also. He said that they have gotten other calls about the same problem before.

Also it seems that on my end, the movie mode via USB isn't recognizing all of my DVD audio.iso files. Meaning that like the .iso file for Big Brother doesn't even show up in its folder, where as the one for R.E.O. does!!!

I'm trying to confirm this right now.

Thats great that they're working on that. One thing I am curious about is why thay installed USB 2.0 ports instead of USB 3.0 which is 10 times faster. USB 3 is an accepted standard and is showing up more an more. There is also an eSatap protocol which provides power like USB which would have been nice. ESata devices require external power. Just a small observation but you wonder about it.

I play quad wavs using DLNA all the time...You don't need to use a HDD to get quad.

OOPS...you guys seem to have figured it out...had to scroll down a bit...apologies.

The BDP-83 had an official firmware update on March 7, 2012. Thought I'd mention it since I don't see a reference in this thread to the update.

The new firmware managed to get my "Game of Thrones" Blu-ray discs to load properly.

Yeah, but the ISO file playback function has been removed in this firmware version.

I Think you mean the 93 firmware, not the 83 firmware.

At some point I plan to purchase an Oppo Blu-ray player. I have an Oppo DV-970HD it does SACD, DVDA, upconverts DVD to 1080p, NTSC and PAL, region free! I also purchased a Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player for a song, it won't do Blu-ray, DVDA or SACD but HD-DVD's are available cheap on eBay. I've months of HD viewing ahead of me for pennies a day! Don't you love so called obsolete formats! Also purchased a working Super Beta HiFi to copy some titles that I've not seen in other formats. I copied David Bowie Serious Moonlight from Beta, just has a few drop-outs. I wonder if the DVD release still has the SQ encoding?

When you have an external hard drive or a thumb drive connected via USB, how exactly do you navigate into the folders? I can see the folders, but as of yet, I can't figure out how I actually get inside the folder to play any of the music files. Obviously, operator error, but just not sure what I'm not doing correctly.

It needs to be a FAT32 drive not NTFS for an 83...you need to select "Music" from the home menu not any of the other options, e.g. "Movies" as it only shows Movie files under Movies.

    Also note from the manual:

The USB ports are rated to provide a maximum of 5V, 500mA power to the
USB drive. It is sufficient for all USB thumb drives and flash memory card
readers, but may not be sufficient for USB hard disks.

    • This unit supports “USB Mass Storage Class Bulk-Only Transport” devices only. Most
USB thumbs drives, portable hard disk drives and card readers conform to this device
class. Other USB devices such as MP3 players, digital cameras, and mobile phones
    may not be compatible.
    • Supported USB drives must be formatted with the FAT (File Allocation Table) or FAT32
file system. Drives formatted with NTFS file system are not supported.
    • In some cases, an incompatible USB device may cause the player to stop responding. If
this occurs simply turn off the power, remove the USB device, and turn the player back
    on.
