This section was requested by a member, and I thought it would be a good idea.

Please put all references to restoration and qualified folks that do restorations. Please note that if a member recommends someone to do a restoration, it is solely the recommendation of the member, and NOT an endorsement from QuadraphonicQuad.

THANKS!

I have bought several pieces from Hajime in Japan. Each one has been perfect. He completely restored my QSD-1 and removed the blend resistors, then calibrated it. It was so much better than i even expected. I don't think he does restorations any more and rarely sells things but if you get the chance to deal with him, you will not be sorry. He is truly a reliable and honest person.

Though not quad equipment I have been sending my dbx power amplifiers (which power my quad/surround system) to "Musicians Service Center" for restoration since the mid 90's: www.musicianservice.com.

379 Meridian Avenue
San Jose, California
95126-3418 USA

(408) 297-7532

If you visit their website you will note they will work on most brands of vintage equipment. These folks have repaired three of my four dbx power amps and I am getting ready to send them the fourth one (right channel died).

When you call them they answer the telephone and will talk to you about your equipment. As far as prices go it is difficult to say since no one else in the USA works on vintage dbx equipment. I considered what I paid to have this equipment brought back to life work every penny. The turn-around time on repairs was acceptable. After I get my amp back and rebuild my savings I will send them my Sansui graphic equalizer for repairs (left channel noisy).

I believe these folks have treated me fairly, they talk to me when I telephone them, the turn-around time for repairs is acceptable, my equipment works properly when it is returned, and the repairs are long lasting. I can recommend them with a clear conscience.

I have bought from Hajime in Japan and second the reccomendation here. He is trustworthy.

Does anyone know an experienced techician in the Ottawa, Canada area? My QRX7001 died 2 nights ago. It had been acting up for a while, missing a channel or 2 until it was ready to co-operate. I just left it powered on, which is my usual preference anyways. I came home 2 nights ago to hear a loud raucous buzz and the volume was at 0. Sounded like touching the phono hot wire with your finger at full volume. When I turned of the system and restarted it, I got a low hum and the radio was low volume and really distorted. All this happened just as my partner comes in with the new Lynyrd Skynyrd from Walmart! :-( I will have to dig out my Sylvania receiver, a 3748, if I remember right. Not a total bad system, but it was starting to get a background noise, and of course, it ain't my Sansui, and I will have to use my outboard 4DD5 now.

I live in Ottawa and had a small tube amp repaired here:
Centek Stereo Repair
C5-2285 St Laurent Bl (At Walkley), OTTAWA, ON K1G 4Z6

Took a couple of weeks but I was pretty happy with them.

I finally took my QRX7001 to Centek. They said it would be a week before they even look at it. While I was there, I saw someone had a QRX999 in for service. I wonder if it is someone's on QQ? The tech walked out and recognised the model without looking closely. I will take that and the fact they were busy as a good sign. I am missing my QS setting.

osoquick is a guy that lives in dallas texas - he collects marantz and sells marantz - at one time i counted 12 marantz 4400 on his shelves - he had just purchased mine.

chris' work is hard to beat - and osoquick uses no other tech...period.

I'm just blown away by the prices the vintage marantz is getting. They do not make them with the build quality anymore. I was always a marantz freak in the 70's.

Jon, I just wanted to say that I think this new section is a great idea! Is there any better recommendation than word of mouth?!!

I do believe that to be very true. I purchased a 4400 from Osoquick on ebay, and I was very pleased with the "complete overhaul" that was done with my unit with full quality first, over expense.

Hi Terry, If you could send me that guys contact info, email, phone...anything, I have a really good project for him. A Technics scope without a power transformer, and what better place for him to be but the exact place it was made! I'll appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks........Neil

I just thought I would post a follow up to my repair at Centek here in Ottawa. I had them service my QRX7001 and it worked great for a few weeks. It seems to have a problem in the phono stage now, but not elsewhere. But I noticed that they didn't pay attention to details like replacing dead bulbs or cleaning pots. I left feeling like asking questions was frowned upon. I later took my Technics 8Track deck to have a full service done. I attached a sticky note with directions for what I wanted done. I asked for lights to be replaced, pots and contacts cleaned, belt replaced, motor grommets replaced(they were going gooey), align the heads and resolder the record leads to the head with record and playback tests. I even tried to supply a fresh blank tape, a stereo alignment tape and a Q8 for test purposes. I got a snarky response from the asian guy who seems to run the place and is the only guy allowed to talk to customers. I waited 3 months and called because I was worried. I was told they could not make it record. I said okay, just do everything else and put it together so I can at least play tapes. They told me they needed a week. I got it back and found right away that the contacts were still noisy, lights were still burnt out and the crosstalk was still bad on most tapes. That was last fall just after I got out of the hospital for a serious illness. I put up with it since then. Tonight I had to open it to retrieve almost half of a tape that got eaten and discovered that the record leads were severed and heatshrinked, the motor grommets weren't replaced and they put the screws in so tight that it was a PITA to open. I stripped a screw head and pinched myself trying to get the ribbon out. Needless to say, I am having a bad night, and couldn't finish playing my new tape from eBay before it was ruined.:howl Anyone got a spare copy of Whipped Cream? This one is in two long pieces. And it sounded great until this happened.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. My repair was fairly simple I guess.
Not sure of any other shops in town.

I am looking for a reliable place that can handle things on high-quality legacy equipment, including rubber parts on tape decks, and repairs for when the processor fails (altho perhaps those cases are hopeless?) Casting a wide net because I have never had much luck on any forum finding any good repair spots! Any help very appreciated!

All,
I just got my Dual 1229Q turntable back from "fixmydual.com". Bill Neumann did a full (standard) rebuild. It previously turned on and spun but that was about it. Now it works and functions as new. His standard rebuild is still $150, which I find remarkable. He also installed my AT440MLB Cart in the headshell and seems to be perfectly aligned as it plays CD-4 very nicely. Reinstalling the cart was a simple as just snapping it into place. Reinstalled counterbalance. Set tracking weight at 1.5 grams. Done. I was up and running in minutes. Played some Gordon Lightfoot, some Zappa, and some Hot Tuna and all played great. Very pleased with the price and quality of his restoration. Hope someone else can benefit from my experience before QQ shuts down:(

Hey M.
QQ ain't goin nowhere my old friend! K

I recommend Walrus Sound in Boulder Colorado. He has worked on speakers, amps, tape decks and turntables for me. Check first about quad specific repairs - he is not a quad specialist and would probably need you to provide schematics, but once he has those I bet he could fix it. Also a great source for vintage tubes.
