Default DVD-A SACD and DTS at Sam Goody

    FYI>>>>>

At the Sam Goody in the mall by me (in Chicago) they have an entire wall devoted to SACD, DVD-A and DTS titles. They have more titles than Circuit City and Best Buy combined including many I have never seen in any store. I picked up David Bowie "Heathen", Miles Davis "In A Silent Way" and Elvis "#1's". And the guys there actually knew what was going on when I asked them questions. Who knew?

Well! It's about time some one took the plunge!
Great to hear! I've been to a lot of places and they the people who work their didn't know much at all about the 2 formats no less the difference between them . I was in a Best Buy, Circuit City, and Twetters. Twetters was the only one who even knew how to ply back a d.t.s. cdr and how to set the system up for discreet play back . That is not to pull the base from the fronts as I do the conversions with a boosted base 80 hz. cross over point and bring it up about 3-6 db direct to the sub .1 channel. If it gets pulled from the fronts alot of times the base is weak and sucks, that's why I do the center and .1 the rest is as it was recorded from the quad !

I freaked out the other day. Around here, the local MEDIA PLAY was closed and reopened as a BEST BUY. I used to always frequent the Media Play during the dawn of DVD (Video).

Anyway, the local BB and Circuit City have very little DVD-A and SACD, with the Best Buy having the most, although CC has dedicated displays for both formats.

Anyway, I stopped into a Media Play store a distance from my normal travels, just for "old time sake", and they had a HUGE display rack FILLED with SACD, DVD-A, and DTS CDs!! I was shocked. I never saw so many in one place. The local dude came over to ask if I needed any help, but it turned out that I had to help him, giving him a 10 minute discourse in SACD and DVD-A. He was appreciative (at least) and I had a flashback to the old days when I would stumble into a store that had a big QUAD section!

Actually, I think that Media Play and Sam Goody are the same store..........no?

Right. Both are owned by the Musicland Group.

I do virtually all my music disc shopping online and hardly ever go to any of the big stores for this purpose. However, the other day I was with my wife as she ran some errands at Home Depot (she was mulling over curtains or some other nonsense) so I had some time to kill. I moseyed across the parking lot to Best Buy and decided to scope out "Joe Public's" exposure to the "new" hi-rez formats.

I went to the music section and asked an employee if they had and DVD-A or SACD titles. Surprise, surprise, she actually knew what I was talking about! She directed me to the DVD music section for DVD-A and said all the SACD's were "in the back of the store near the big screen TV's".

Well, since the DVD section was closer, I stopped there first. In the "Musical" section, grouped in with the music DVD videos, they had a fairly good selection of DVD-A and DTS CD titles. I was actually surprised to see all the DTS CD's. In any event, they at least had stock, even if their presentation was a bit haphazard and probably confusing for Joe Public.

Then I wandered back to the big screen TV's and looked around in vain for any SACD's. I tried to find help but there weren't any red shirts in that section at the moment. After a while I gave up and went back to the music section. I decided to see if they had the Stones SACD discs there. They did.

At that point I got bored with my little experiment and went and bought myself a wireless keyboard and mouse to use with my "home theater" PC.

Anyway, that's my brick-and-mortar story. Yipee!

Yeah, MEDIA PLAY was started by the MUSICLAND GROUP to compete with BEST BUY

Sorry, half my reply was lost. SAM GOODY, MEDIA PLAY, & ON CUE are all owned by the MUSICLAND GROUP. The MUSICLAND GROUP was purchased by BEST BUY a couple of years ago. BB was going to slightly alter SAM GOODYS to compete with RADIO SHACK. It's great that SG is on the SACD & DAD bandwagon, although I will probably continue to special order SACD & DAD'S from my local mom & pop shop. BB's SACD section is somewhere in the audio department next to the SACD players, but you will find the STONES in the regular CD section along with some other SACD titles mis-filed. Sony is paying them for a 5.1 surround display.

Sony may be paying them for the 5.1 display, but at my Best Buy, the only SACDs there are a pile of classical discs and a few stereo only SACD pop and jazz titles. All new releases like "JT", "Cheap Thrills", "Bat out of Hell" all turned up in the regular CD racks, PRICED AS REGULAR CDs!!! ($11.99)

That was fine with me! , however, it makes it a bit harder for the newbie to find them.

    Brian,

I'll have to check the James Taylor section closely.

Say, did you hear anything about Blue Oyster Cult - Agents Of Fortune as a multi-channel SACD on 12/10/02? It occurs to me that I pre-ordered one at a ridiculously low price, so I'll see what's happening at the source...

The Blue Oyster Cult Multichannel SACD is said to be coming soon.

I've seen dates of 12/24 and Jan 2003 for it. My guess is probably towards the end of January. We'll see.

At our local Best Buy in Tulsa, OK they have ALL of their DVD-A's, SACD's and DTS CDs in the DVD music section. I have searched the regular CD section, and haven't seen any misplaced SACDs.

    Thanks for reply.

I checked Digital Eyes today and they claim it's in stock. I'll believe it when it hits the mailbox...

Hard to say. Elusive Disc shows it as a 12/24 release while Red Trumpet's web site says 1/21/2003 !
