I just noticed that when playing the DVD-Audio version, the video (showing the lyrics) doesn't actually skip past the first set of lyrics (first screen)....anyone else notice this. Weird, but it really doesn't matter to me...still very very happy about this release!

Too bad it wasn't done like the Crowded House disc where the pages flip automatically.

I listened to this once in the car today, and although I have to admit I don't know this album well, I was very pleased with the surround mix. It wasn't overdone, but it was really FULL. There was enough going on to make you realize it was 5.1, but it didn't hit you over the head like an old Columbia Q8.

As for the material, I have to agree that it sounded great LOUD. There was something in each tune to like. Not voting yet, but this is a damn fine release from UMG.

Now, maybe this will set a precedent for the last 3 Eltons. DVD-A! SWEET!!!!

I've now listed attentively to this dvd-audio twice. I think this is going to be amongst my favorite dvd-audios (or other surround formats). The fact is that I prefer discs where the goal seems to be the filling of space left by a standard stereo recording as compared to those surround recordings where the emphasis seems to be on the separation of the sounds rather than the cohesiveness/envelopment of sound for the listener. The songs are great, I love the production, and it was put out at the right price. 10 all the way!

With the Blu-ray version, the pages flip automatically.

Picked this up today. Went to three different stores looking for the BluRay version, but that seems to be sold out all over the place while everyone was pretty stocked of the DVD version. Gave in and bought the DVD ($17.99 at J&R!)

As for the mix, this is about as average as it gets. While there's a few neat flourishes here and there, and the clarity is spot-on, all that was really present for me was some increased sense of soundfield. In not many places did I feel like I was truly immersed in experiencing the album in surround. It's amazing. These producers literally have access to the multi-tracks, but they can't even give you a nicely centered vocal. Lazy, lazy, lazy. While there were a few places where I thought, "OK...there's something I couldn't do myself," mostly with some new panning effects, most of the surround just did not leave me with that impression. At least with a couple of the KC and PT mixes, I would stop listening knowing that it was something that was only possible when you had a professional mix. A missed opportunity with an album which, from actual professionals, should have been an easy home run.

5 out of 10 from me.

Are those 3 stores best buy? If not, I think it won't release there till 3rd May officially...

BB, Borders, J&R. BB had a space for them next to the DVD, as did J&R. Maybe they were expecting them to be out on the same day?

When I went to Best Buy the day it was released, I was lucky that I snagged the last DVD-A version. There were still quite a few Blu-Ray versions available (I happen to buy that version also). I guess they didn't stock as many DVD-A's figuring that more people would buy the Blu-Ray instead.

It was really weird going into Best Buy in 2011 and buying a brand new dvd-a. It was like I was transported back a decade. I'm really grateful for this release and I'm hoping it may inject some life back into the format.

Great realization about surround in general. Only wish I could comment specifically about this album but sadly I'm still waiting for my copy. On the other hand, it's fabulous that the demand is high.

Best Buy by Lincoln Center in NYC had about 10-12 DVD-As out, no BD's. Borders had two DVD-As, no BD's. At J&R, they were swimming in DVD-As. I counted about 15 sitting on an endcap, four in the bins, and a box underneath full of them for restocking. no BD's. very different experience for me.

    been pissed-off by amazon.ca
placed order back in march 23 to finaly get an e-mail that "item was sold out and if i wish,
    i can cancel my order".
on top of this, e-mail arrived on april 6, when the price on amazon was changed to $29.99
and next day when i went to local BB, naturaly i didn't have chance to claim "price match".
anyway, after 30 minutes of search, with help of in-store stuff, luckily we found 5 discs,
3 of which was BD and 2 DVDA. that's all, they got for their retail. well, i took both DVDA
    for something around $40+
so far i'm not ready to vote but unlike of some folks above i didn't saw problems with vocal
in rear speakers. in full surround picture it is firmly leading in center of front line.

agreed that it's experienced in the center of the soundfield for the most part. i must say, though, that, in one track (can't remember which right now), the vocal actually felt a bit between C and FL in the soundfield to my ears.

i can understand someone calling me out on something like that when I work from stereo, but these producers literally have individual parts in front of them. how they can't nail that vocal, with that type of control, is beyond me. they make some damn strange choices sometimes.

"Best Buy" has an exclusive on the CD+Blu-ray disc for 30 days....then it will start to make it's way into other retailers.
The CD+DVD version can be purchased anywhere as of this past Tuesday.

I'm a bit surprised by the lack of votes on this version of the release thus far. I would hope that each and every member of this forum went out and bought a copy (or two) of this release. Let's see those votes

Many people wait to vote until they live with the thing a few times. If one votes right away, they usually love it (10) or hate it (3).

(moved from blu-ray thread, since I have the DVD-A, not the Blu-Ray, though I expect exactly zero sonic difference to exist between them....)

Agreed that the 5.1 mix sounds better played loud, and agreed that the mixer should have put more vocal in the center channel. And given that this is a 3-piece band with not much happening in the way of keyboards or backing vocals, the mix engineer could have gone more crazy with the drum mix.

(Also agreed that in the 70s', Rush music was considered 2nd-string prog by older prog fans. Their 13-yr-old brothers loved it, though. )

    I give it a 6.

One thing I've noticed giving this a few go rounds, is that there is a lot more going on delicately and subtle than one hears right away at first glance. There also seems to be a lot of real thought and reason for putting things where they are and as they are to compliment the songs and original stereo mix. One can agree or disagree with such things, but I'm quite satisfied with this rich mix and I'm noticing more detail which each listen, as with each and every RUSH album I've ever encountered. Also, tone and detail of instruments sound good and true, especially for a recording recorded 30 years ago.

Sounds great! I gave it a nine. Cool panning on Geddy's vocals. Alex sounds amazing. Could use a smudge more clarity on drums. I wonder what Eliot could have done. Obviously, first rate material. Thrilled with DVD-A release. Keep I coming. If this is because it's the 30th anniversary, did you know it's the 35th for 2112 and the 20th for Roll the Bones?
....just a suggestion for what's next...

    I voted 9

Simply put, I have never listened to any Rush album at low volume.

I cranked this sucker up, kicked back and......... now I am deaf!

All kidding aside, thanks to all for a 2011 DVD-A release.

Default Re: Rush - MOVING PICTURES [DVD-A]

I listened some more, it does sound better loud (the way i loved my music as a teenager). When you can't hear the neighbors you know you have the proper volume level...... I'm getting used to the mix and notice neat things happening in the rears like with Vital Signs. Agree that it would be nice to have the drums more prominent. Getting closer to voting....
