Had a couple other titles in my hands but put them down after my wife looked unhappy. I see the new John Hiatt on this list a couple of times and want to know if anyone bought the deluxe version with the Hi-Res tracks? If so did you compare to the cd? thanks, Scott

Marillion - Marbles Madfish 2 CD edition
and a few 2009 remasters of Beatles - Please Please me, With the Beatles, Yellow Submarine, Let it be, Beatles for Sale

I made a trip to Bowling Green recently and went to Finder's Records. They were having an LP sale, $5 off. So I picked up;

Kansas - "Leftoverture" (180g)
The Monkees (self titled)
The Strawberry Alarm Clock - "Incense And Peppermints"
Tedeschi Trucks Band - (debut -2 LP set, 180 g)

Just went to Cleveland to see the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Saturday evening. What an awesome performance!

A couple of Red Nichols and the Five Pennies Brunswick 78's from about 1926.....specifically for the Eddie Lang guitar performances. What else?.....Last Robbie Robertson solo CD....Chicago VII quad LP, "Sisters" OST QS LP, thanks to Oxford D. or I would have never thought to look for that one! John S.

Robbie Robertson's How to Become Clairvoyant is the best album released this year. Clapton is on 7 tracks!

RED NICHOLS!!! I have several CD's of his early work. The fidelity on his post-comeback LP's on Capitol is stunning. Two of my prize possessions are a rare Mofi LP of Live in Marineland and a German LP compilation of Capitol tracks. Eddie Lang had some hot licks on those early sides.

Most of all, I'm envious of your Chicago VII. I was at the Grant Park concert in Chi that became Chicago Live (26.) If you listen closely you can hear me yell "salsa!" Lee Loughnane got a charge out of that.

GREAT CHOICES John!

Linda
I've Been Searching So Long (for a clean SQ of Chicago VII)

CDs:
JOHN HIATT - Dirty Jeans & Mudslide Hymns
ERIC JOHNSON - Up Close
FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE - Sky Full Of Holes

We'll see John Hiatt this saturday night @ The Ryman Auditorium (Big Head Todd & THe Monsters opening), he's always great. I love the EJ - Up Close CD and played it 3 times in a row driving around on a warm summer evening! Fountains Of Wayne *consistently* provide clever catchy pop effortlessly. Recommended.

CDs:
Tedeschi Trucks Band - Revelator - carrying on in the tradition of Delaney and Bonnie

Pat Metheny - What's It All About - lovely solo acoustic arrangements of classic pop tunes - mainly played on his Baritone acoustic with Nashville tuning.

John Hiatt - Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns - another solid outing from a songrwriter's songwriter. The Hi Rez stereo 24/96 tracks on the bonus DVD are excellent.

Steve Cropper - Dedicated- fantastic salute to the 5 Royales from one of the all time greats with vocal assistance from Steve Winwood, Bettye LaVette, B.B. King, Lucinda Williams, Sharon Jones, Dan Penn, Buddy Miller, Delbert McClinton, John Popper and Brian May (yes that Brian May).

My Morning Jacket - Circuital - These Kentucky rockers get better with each new album - and they always break new ground - highly recommended.

Raphael Saadiq - Stone Rollin' - excellent neo soulster who can rock out as well.

Also looking forward to picking up a couple of new ones tomorrow - Glen Campbell - Ghost On A Canvas & Lindsey Buckingham - Seeds We Sow

OK, I'm up with jet lag, so here is the list of records I found in Japan. One group from a tiny store in Osaka, naka records that was closing their location and sold everything half price. The next group I bought in Otsu city. By pure luck we visited a shopping center due to the incessant rain, and found that a record trader set up his tables on the first floor for a one month show. It was an entire portable record store with great inventory and cheap, cheap prices. For instance Caravanserai sq for 180 yen, about three dollars.

Hawaiian cd-4 deluxe with obi
Henry Mancini A warm Shade of Ivory cd-4 with obi
Paul Mauriat cd-4
Chaquito Latin Colours cd-4
Martinu Concertos 1&2 SQ on Supraphon, Czech
Plus several picture sleeve 45s of the Walker Brothers including 4 Scott Walker solo 45s
Wish i had more time to check all the 45s......but my 3 year old was tugging at me... :(

Joe Farrell Penny Arcade CTI, SQ marked on record groove
Deodato Airto In concert CTI SQ marked on record groove with obi
Paul Simon St SQ with inserts
Michael Polnareff A Tokio SQ
Santana Caravanserai SQ gatefold
plus two nonquads Joe Farrell Outback with obi
and Jean-Luc Ponty Civilized evil with insert.

All Japanese editions except for the Supraphon. I had to limit myself to 4 channel and what I could carry home.......

Oh yea, and I saw some temples and stuff in Japan....... :)

Just bought some vinyl for my nephew: Pink Floyd Live in London 1966-1967 (new) and the Stranglers' Black & White (used). He's really into Syd-era Floyd and I wanted to turn him on to one of my favorite albums from High School with the Stranglers.

For myself I've recently purchased some vinyl too: The White Stripes' De Stijl and White Blood Cells, Fugazi's Repeater, RHCP's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and Coltrane's Blue Train.

Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die (180g)

Robbie Robertson - How to Become Claivoyant
Hot Tuna - Steady As She Goes
Leon Russel - Carney
Moby Grape - Listen My Friends
My Morning Jacket - Circuital
Paul Simon - So Beautiful Or So What
Warren Haynes - Man In Motion
Dr. John - Tribal

WOW! Great List, Dennis. Moby Grape is my #1 fave band and their first album is the Holy Grail for me. It was my avatar for a while. Most of it is on Listen My Friends. Omaha made CBS's 100 year greatest collection. I agree. Robbie & Paul are the best albums so far this year. Wish there were 5.1's. How's Barleycorn? I just got the SHM-SACD a few weeks ago. Sounds great. Still need to get the 2 disc expanded. Would love a review of Carney. Have an old EMI/Shelter from 15 years ago. Do you have another copy to A/B?

My ex's Nephew & his Wife invited us to Ravinia to listen to Dr. John & Madelyn Peyroux. We picnicked on the lawn, wine glasses in hand. Mac Rebennac was WONDERFUL! Dr. John wasn't bad, either.

Story time: saw Leon 5 years ago at BB King's off Times Square. We were at the very front. Some guy comes and sits at the keyboard bench with him. Aah, a roadie, I thought. Leon gives an "are you nuts?" look and they escort the whacko out of the club. A great venue, check it out when in NY. Intimate.

Dennis and I took a road trip to Bowling Green, Ohio, yesterday and spent 4 hours looking through a huge music store. He spent a little more than I did, but I'm a born again virgin to vinyl... I had no idea how many new vinyl releases are available, and I am stunned at my new-found fascination with it! I resisted the urge to spend a lot more money than I did; I went with a classic that I've purchased multiple times and a new release that I'd never heard:

Boston - "Boston" on 180g (Friday Music)
Sloan - "Parallel Play" on 180g with free digital download (192kbps mp3). I haven't bought a new Sloan release in several years, and this, in my opinion, is as good or better than the early stuff I have. As I sit in the sweet spot listening over and over again, I feel 12 years old again.

How's the 180G of Boston? I love my 2ch SACD, wish it were 5.1. Do you have something to A/B it to? The next best sounding Boston was the CBS Mastersound 1/2 speed LP. Never bothered with the CBS Gold disc. Hated those first longbox packages.

Should have unloaded my Don't Look Back original CD when they were going for $200. I could have rebought it when it was finally reissued. My Japanese CD of Abbey Road is a keepsake. That was also going for $200 or more. For years, people would sit and say "can't wait for Beatles on CD." I'd walk over to the rack, flip them the empty Toshiba/EMI Abbey Road case and cue it up. When audiophiles, rock hounds and industry people would first visit my house, friends would grab it and show them. Their BEST album! How'd you get THAT? Priceless!

There are lots of LP reissues that may have sold more now than they did on first issue. Some obscure, but cool stuff. Some odd stuff that wasn't in print for decades, even on CD.

Bricks & Mortar, what a concept. Think I'll hit Rolling Stone this week.

I See My Maryanne Walking Away...

How's the 180G of Boston?

Linda, I'm not good at saying what sounds better. I've tried A/B'ing stuff, and it just drives me bananas. I think this Friday Music 180g vinyl sounds pretty darn good. I really like Tom Scholtz' 2006 remastered CD, but I didn't A/B them. The only other versions I've had are the original CD release, pre-recorded cassette from back in the day, and the picture disc, which is more for show than tell.

I've heard the 2ch SACD (a FAVE!), 1/2 speed CBS Mastersound LP, original US CD and original pressing LP. Had dozens of copies of that as demo LP's. Delayed buying it, awaiting a Quad Boston. "Hell, it's the best selling LP in the country! They gotta do an SQ. Better yet, a Q8 to play in my car!" When it never happened, it was a sign Quad was dead. Same thing with Foreigner, though the earlier Quadradisc stickers on CD-4's told me they were toast. Wasn't holding my breath to hear Cold as Ice in Quad. At least I got to hear that in 5.1 later. Bet the 2006 remix beats all execpt SACD. Maybe even that, too. So, is the LP the '06 remaster? Did he remix it in '06?

A/B'ing can drive you bonkers!! Sometimes, the differences are SO subtle. Most times, if you key into certain frequencies, instruments or voices, it becomes evident in a heartbeat. I've owned as many as a dozen copies of some classic stuff. I've owned at least two copies of everything, if it predates CD. Other than CD or LP repressings and reissues, which are sometimes one in the same, they ALL sound different. A fun and enlightening exercise, if you're in the right mood. Invite your audiophile buddies for A/B'ing parties. Does this mean I was in the audio business too long?

Linda
