I have a challenge for anybody interested in a surround brain teaser. Can anyone think of an artist or musician who has performed on at least four surround releases that were each released under a different artist name? I’m talking about studio recordings on any surround format. A good example would be Steven Wilson, who has thus far appeared on the following surround releases under four different artist names.

  1. Porcupine Tree – “In Absentia” (DVD-A), “Deadwing” (DVD-A), “Fear of a Blank Planet” (DVD-A), “LIghtbulb Sun” (DVD-A) “Stupid Dream” (DVD-A) and “The Incident” (DVD-A).
  2. No Man – “Together We’re Stranger” (DVD-A) and “Schoolyard Ghosts” (DVD-A)
  3. Bass Communion – “Loss” (DVD-A) and “Pacific Codex” (DVD-A)
  4. Steve Wilson – “Insurgentes” (DVD-A) and “Grace for Drowning” (Bluray).

As you can see, Mr. Wilson has appeared on numerous surround releases, but only under four different artist names. I’m not counting his work with Blackfield, because no studio recordings have yet been released in surround.

Another example would be John Lennon who has played on the following surround releases.

  1. Beatles - “Love” (DVD-A)
  2. John Lennon - “Imagine” (Q8, SQ) “Walls and Bridges” (Q8) and “Legend” (DVD-V)
  3. David Bowie - “Young Americans” (DVD-V). He appears on the tracks “Fame” and “Across the Universe”.
  4. Elton John - “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy” (SACD). He appears on the bonus track “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”.

My last example is Ian McDonald, the man from whom this idea came after I realized that he played on four releases by four different artists.

  1. King Crimson “In the Court of the Crimson King” (DVD-A) Plays mellotron, sax and flute. Also appears on “Red” (DVD-A) playing alto sax on the tracks “One More Red Nightmare” and “Starless”.
  2. Fire Ballet “Night on Bald Mountain” (QS) He produced this quad L.P., but also played alto sax and flute on several tracks.
  3. T-Rex “Electric Warriors” (DVD-A). Plays saxophone.
  4. Foreigner “Foreigner” (DVD-A) Plays guitar, keyboards, saxophone and flute.

You might have to dig deep to come up with four. Three is a heck of a lot easier. Getting over that fourth hump is quite the challenge. I can think of at least one more, but I’m going to refrain so that others get the chance. So, can anybody add to this list?

Still on the King Crimson theme:

Gavin Harrison:

Porcupine Tree – In Absentia (onwards)
Steven Wilson - Insurgentes
Gavin Harrision & 05RIC – Circles
No-Man – Schoolyard Ghosts

You're on a roll Lizard King. It was Tony Levin who I was thinking of before. He is actually a six when you count the tracks he played on that are included in John Lennon's "Legend" DVD-V.

I forgot about Gavin Harrison playing on Schoolyard Ghosts. Good call!

Tony Levin - for me was the obvious guy being a well known session musician.... Didn't know he was on Jean-Pierre Ferland - Jaune - I have this on my bucket list - it's now moved closer to the top of my list.

Another one:

Theo Travis:

Porcupine Tree – Stupid Dream
No-man – Schoolyard Ghosts
Steven Wilson – Grace for Drowning
Bass Communion - Pacific Codex

Another KC one:

Robert Fripp:

King Crimson - I won't list em all
Jakysck, Fripp & Collins - A Scarcity of Miracles
Talking Heads - Fear of Music (Just remembered this one)....
Porcupine Tree - Fear of A Blank Planet (on Nil Recurring I believe).....

I'm on a roll......trying to find some more Bill Bruford 5.1 albums ( I tenuously have three) then I'm done for the 80's lineup...

And finally: :)

Bill Bruford:

King Crimson - Various.
Yes - Fragile
Absolute Elsewhere - In Search Of Ancient Gods - Thanks to the Dreaming Spires for jogging my memory..
Symphonic Music of Yes - London Symphony Orchestra with Steve Howe and Jon Anderson (Dolby Surround)

So thats it....the ultimate four by four club is the KC line-up from Discipline:
Robert Fripp
Adrian Belew
Tony Levin
Bill Bruford

If you don't have Discipline - get it now....

OK. This list may not be complete, but he still wins top honors here for his drum and perscussion work for the following artists and corresponding surround releases that run the gamut of every format: Q8, Q4, QS, SQ, CD-4, SACD, DVD-A, DVD-V.

I think we're just getting started with Tony Levin. There's also Buddy Rich's "The Roar of '74" and Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All These Years." In fact, I bet there are plenty of session players who played of numerous quad albums in the 70s which were released under different artists' names.
