Checking out the B-52's next week at a casino, 5th row! I haven't seen them live since the early 80's. I'm also seeing Van Halen the following week. This will be my first time seeing them, I never had the desire to see them with Hagar and this is most likely my last shot at seeing them with DLR. Still bummed about MA not being in the band.

my partner saw the B-52's (more recently than the 80's, I'll ask when they're home) and raved about them!

Van Halens' tour is still going ahead!? all that talk of the rest of it being cancelled was just that then..!? talk! ha!

With you on that, Michael Anthony should have come back into the band for this tour (how likely is that tho seeing as he firmly sided with Van Hagar..!?) but Wolfies' doing alright by the looks of it tho!

Phoenix is one of the last shows they're doing before cancelling the remainder of the tour. Got lucky on that one.

My wife wanted to go see the B-52's here next week but the day they are here we are leaving for D.C. to attend a wedding.

We got a pair of decent seats for Leonard Cohen up in Denver in November - definitely not an inexpensive concert to start with and adding in gas and hotel makes it a "this better be good" show. Rasputina are playing a club here in town this fall and that will be a fun cheap night out.

Another couple on the horizon:

Sybarite5 are doing a return engagement here in a couple weeks. We really enjoyed seeing them before so we'll check 'em out again!

Devotchka are playing a show up at Red Rocks in Denver in September, with the symphony on hand. Another long drive, but we're going to make stops on the way back and do some sightseeing, and maybe the new zip-line up at Angel Fire - http://www.angelfireresort.com/summer/mountain/zipline

Jane's Addiction tonight at the Aragon in Chicago, Lollapalooza aftershow.

Great weekend of music! First the Jane's Addiction show mentioned above. As always, the sound at the Aragon sucked, but they still put on a great show. We got a good spot up close and to the side. As a bonus, Peter DiStefano came out for a song and they played Porno For Pyros' Cursed Female. I thought he might be the first of many guest stars considering all the talent that was in town, but that was it. Still very cool and a another great performance by JA.

Then on Sunday it was Day 3 of Lollapalooza. This was my first Lolla since they've been based in Chicago (my home town), but I've been to many of the previously traveling Lollas. Considering the setup with multiple stages and the space, I was surprised by how consistently great the sound was for each band.

We got there in time for the Sigur Ros set. This was the first time I'd seen them live. They sounded really good live, especially in a festival setting, which doesn't seem to be conducive to their style of music.

Next up was At the Drive-In, the main reason I traveled to Chicago, having gotten back together after a 10 year break. Despite some technical difficulties, they put out an explosive set! It was definitely worth going just to get the chance to see them live. I like The Mars Volta and Sparta, the two bands formed by the members after the breakup, but ATDI is so much better than either of them. I really hope they get back together permanently.

Then to finish off the night was Jack White. I was a huge White Stripes fan, but they seemed to be on the decline with their last two albums, so I wasn't too upset when they broke up. It seemed like it was the right time. Jack's other projects, the Raconteurs and Dead Weather, didn't do much for me. But his solo album this year ranks up there with anything the White Stripes have done and he just killed on stage Sunday night! I've seen the White Stripes live, and they were great, but Jack's two bands on Sunday (first half of the show was an all male band, second half was an all female band) added a lot of depth to the music. Jack played a lot of old WS songs throughout the night, as well as the Raconteurs "Steady As She Goes," in addition to the solo songs. It was all great! Where the WS were basically guitar and drums, the solo bands added bass, violin, keyboards, mandolin, and pedal steel guitar. An amazing show, the best performance of a spectacular weekend.

Going to see Rasputina here in Abq next Friday, always fun.

Just announced was a show by Wovenhand up in Santa Fe next month, and as that's just a short drive up I25 I'll make the tip for that.

Drove up to Denver last weekend for Leonard Cohen. I was a little apprehensive as it was in an arena and hoped the sound would be okay - I thought his low talk-sing style could get a bit muddled up in a place like that....but it was surprisingly good. They sent out an email a couple days prior telling people to make sure to arrive a bit early as he would be onstage promptly at 8pm - and he was. About 9:30 he introduced the band during "Anthem" and I figured that was it, 90 minutes plus encore from a guy his age isn't too shabby. But, that was just intermission! Came back on after a 30 minute break and did another set. By the time the 3 encores were done he had played 2h:45m - wow!

Well, we were supposed to see Wovenhand this past week in Santa Fe but their head guy (david edwards) came down with pneumonia so the show was cancelled. They're looking at resched for January and I really hope that works out - the more I listen to the new record the more I like it.

In the mean time, just bought tix for a Lucinda Williams show here...no band, stripped down, just her and a second instrumentalist...sounds great to me.

This coming Saturday:

The TWO performing their new album 'Who's Left?'

j/k...we are going to see what's left of the Who doing QUADrophenia. Saw them do this 3 times in the 90's while the Ox was still alive. I keep hearing about how great this tour is sounding, but I know I will miss ol' Thunderfingers' bass playing.

Coming next year...a not-to-be-missed tour by

Steve Hackett performing only 72-77 Genesis material, plus a couple 'extra' solo/unrecorded items from the same era. Only chance I will get to hear Supper's Ready performed by ANY of the originals (never saw the Gabriel or post-Gabe Genesis when they did it)

Also just saw that Fleetwood Mac will be playing Philly on a Saturday in April...somehow never saw them before, but I have seen Mick with Camel synth guy Peter Bardens and also saw a Lindsey solo show.

Bought tickets for Lucinda Williams here in Abq - acoustic show, just her with one other musician. Also will make yet another drive up to Denver in April for Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.

Saw Wovenhand here a couple weeks ago. A little different than his last tour - just a stripped-down core trio and everything was played electric and *loud* - worked well for a lot of the stuff but in some cases the subtlety was a little lost.

Last night it was The Portland Cello Project at a small performance space here. They did a real mix of stuff from Beck, Kanye, Pantera as well as selections from their classical repertoire. Opening the show was a band I'd not heard of before - The Alialujah Choir and both bands joined each other on stage during their respective sets, creating an even wider variety in the music. All in all a really enjoyable night out.

Scheduled so far..

Old 97s @ Antone's in Austin, TX in Feb
Larry Carlton @ Infinity Music Hall in CT in Apr
Goat Rodeo Sessions (Yo Yo Ma, Chris Thiele et al) @ Tanglewood in Lenox, MA in Aug

many more in between and after I'm sure

Uli Jon Roth later this month in a club in Tempe. I heard this tour was supposed to include a set of his classic work with Scorpions. A guy from Detroit who saw the show up there said it was ENTIRELY Scorpions songs. The Roth era was when Scorpions rocked, not that power ballad crap they devolved into.

Went to see Billy Bragg last night as the wife wanted to. I despised every minute of it...been a long time since I have disliked a concert so much.

Much higher hopes for Nick Cave next week in Denver, and then in June it's Devotchka with the Colorado Symphony again, which was really good last fall.

Okay, saw Nick Cave 2 nights ago up at the Ogden in Denver. Nice little theater with pretty good sound, same place I saw him with the Bad Seeds back in 2008. This time they played much better than the last time, more energetic, like they meant it. (I seriously thought the show back in '08 was dreadful, worst I'd ever seen him). The songs from the new album came across very well, and were received by the crowd enthusiastically...especially Jubilee Street. He played 5 tracks from the new one - 4 to start the evening and then 1 more to close out the night. My complaint with the show was the material in-between...the same stuff I've heard him play virtually every show. Sure they're decent songs but enough - he must surely be tired of singing the same ones, and he's got a huge catalog to draw from so why not mix it up a little. I can handle 2 or 3 of the "standard favorites" and you have to expect that I suppose, but it gets boring when there's about 10 in a row. So, unless he starts altering the set lists a bit more I'll certainly not drive for 7 hours to see him again. I'd have loved it if he did what the album showcase shows were - all the new record and then a few oldies and 2 or 3 very rarely played songs too.

This morning I bought a pair of tickets for Alice Cooper - they just added a date to the tour here in Abq and as I've not seen him since about 74 I thought I'd better go while I have the chance. Should be fun as long as we arrange to miss the Marilyn Manson set.

Tonight (yesterday at this point.) Herb Alpert & Lani Hall at Park West, Chicago. I've seen Herb 6 times, 3 with Lani. Tonight was the best. I've met them both. Great show and a great version of Puttin' On the Ritz from the upcoming album. It was a wonderful evening, a great dinner and concert with a great guy I've recently begun dating. Two years ago, I went with 9 GF's to hear them do a similar show. This one was much better. Lots of standards, like their last two albums, with a GREAT TJB/Rise medley and lots of Brazil '66 numbers. Go see them.
