Re: Internet Opinions
Because there's a very big difference between having a face-to-face discussion with someone and having it over the internet. The internet brings out the worst tendencies in many people.
This is nothing new. I was dealing with asshats of this sort on listservs back in th late 90's.
You really should ease up on the Beatles hate, though, Jon and, really, quitting a forum like that? For shame.

Jon:
I was raised by my parents to believe that "manners matter" and I still believe it. Self control also matters. I find myself reading something on line that pushes my buttons and I will compose a scathing rebuttal while I am fired up. I have learned over time to save it to my "drafts" folder and reread what I had written the next day. Often I find myself just deleting because what I had written made me sound like a jerk, or I take the time to rewrite it before hitting 'send'. Manners and self-control - they are important.
(Rereading this I sound just like my father 55 years ago.)

Re: Internet Opinions
I see a forum like this as all about the surround music and the technology that makes it happen. These are topics I find interesting. Put-downs and arguments are boring. Luckily I don't think I've been involved in that, but if I wanted to be, I'd look for The Argument Forum.
Ah. I'd like to have an argument, please.
R: Certainly sir. Have you been here before?
M: No, I haven't, this is my first time.
R: I see. Well, do you want to have just one argument, or were you thinking of taking a course?
What sucks is when the attacks hurt someone trying to help the surround cause, that is sad.
obviously.....

Re: Internet Opinions
I just got into a discussion on another forum about analog and high res. He kept telling me I was wrong, yet I would post answers from Oppo! twice, then he gave up. I stopped it, just by telling him he was free to his opinion, and leave it at that, and with a friendly closing. People get on the net and you are not face to face with the other opinion so they revert to immature comments to make a point. see it all the time. If taliking face to face, it wouldn't go that far. tit 4 tat grow up already!

It's real easy to get caught up in something and get carried away real quick.
I do my best to give it the "overnight test" as mentioned above while keeping in mind that the relationship with the person is usually much more important than the particulars involved anyway. Sometimes I fail and it's usually evident to me right away. Minimize regrets.

Re: Internet Opinions
there are some very interesting "Internet opinions" being expressed right now on this forum, in the SACD Multi-Channel discussion section, specifically regarding the new Doors Analogue Productions SACDs and some posts from a new QQ member, djsweep.
I'm particularly interested in the Internet opinions being expressed in that thread by djsweep, as I love those Elton SACDs and want to learn as much as possible about them from someone who was seemingly there at the Super Audio Center in Colorado and heard the DSD files for themselves.
very juicy indeed!

it's easy to get carried away in other respects on the Internet!
I was one of the folks who got swept along in the very recent discovery of the so-called quad mix of the Doobies' Takin' it to the Streets album and now I wish I'd followed your "overnight test" timbre4 and reassessed the situation in the cold light of day before putting my neck on the block and believing it was the genuine article..!

Re: Internet Opinions
Jon, I couldn't agree more. Sadly, these confrontations exist everywhere. I've been President of 2 not-for-profit organizations and currently run 2 physical groups with closed Internet groups tied to them. We experience the same BS from time to time. How sad it is that SOME, not most of us, get so adamant about our own points of view that we can't acknowledge others' right to have their own opinion.
Justin's advice is very wise.
The vast majority of the time, QQ members have been respectful to each other, as well as to me. I've even had a couple instances where I've intervened in a battle, and the others have "kissed and made up." There was one other instance where I attempted to do that after a member attacked two other people. At that point, I was also attacked and I asked to take it off line. He then informed me that he was making that I didn't exist. Disrespect from one arrogant person doesn't make all QQ members jerks, just one.
I have appreciated not only being treated with respect, but being treated as though I have a brain, as well, from all but one person in my year on QQ. I hope that everyone will take your words to heart. Sadly, those who are respectful will heed your words. Those who your words are aimed at will think that everyone else is the problem, and that it couldn't possibly apply to them.

Re: Internet Opinions
having initially found this site (in '09) and then gone on an initial flurry of excitement, posting here there & everywhere, I took something of a backseat and just used this forum to monitor new releases, check out rumours of potential future 5.1 stuff and then just check in occasionally the more the new stuff dried up. how glad I am to be able to make a contribution to the discussion once again! this forum is literally the most fun I've had in ages! (maybe I should get out more!? ha!)

After getting into a few tussles myself I am developing my own guidelines. One that I really like is assume the best instead of assuming the worst when reading somebody's comment.

I write responses to posts all the time, spend some time on them, then delete them. I've worked through my thought process and confirmed what I think and decided I wasn't adding anything.
