Just grabbed an sq-w for under 10up.
Thanks to this forum for the insight and haggle confidence!

No dents or scratches on the outside but a little dust.

I have my tt playing through the source input of the sq-w and out to the 4ch discrete tape inputs of a pioneer qx949.

Problems.
The bass is not very loud.
There is a low white noise passing through. Not really a grounding buzz.. but a white wash sound.
The L and H sensitivity switch crakle when they are changed.
The overall sound is not very strong. I can tell it is decoding. But not pushing through that well.

Any obvious ways to improve my situation?

Thanks for the help everyone. I am building quite set up.

Some say the SQ-W (and SQ-L) do not have proper Phono Pre-Amp sections and they must be connected through your receivers tape loops.

That is right
Pug into the tape output then outputs of the decoder
to 4ch discrete tape inputs of a pioneer qx949
you plug you T/table into phono
you do not plug your T/Table outputs strait into the decoder

ok. so, I have the four channel outs from the sq decoder going into the four channel tape ins of my receiver. (is that what you mean by tape loops?)

When I plug my JVC 4dd5 into the same tape inputs of the receiver it sounds solid.
Also, when I run the 4dd5 through the four discrete ins on the SQ-w it also sounds solid.

So, the lack of bass (or simply full sound) when the sq-w is switched to SQ full logic mode seems to be the issue.

i have yet to smack the device, but it is indeed asking for it.

what do i do with the volume knob? it seems odd that it is even there.

thanks all.

wait what rusty andi? can you explain those few sentences again.

plug what into the tape outputs then what now?

2 channel tape out into decoder

then 4 channel out from decoder into 4 channel inputs on amp

That means you put 2 channels in and get 4 channels out

Your T/Table plugs into the amp phono input
Then the decoder plugs into the tape out RCA to 2 channel input of the decoder
so the signal goes into the decoder then is split into 4 channel then goes into the 4 channel discrete inputs of you amp

Yeah - That is how my Surround Master is hooked up... not counting switches....@:

I looked up the Receiver

There 3 4 channel inputs and outputs

Plug tape 1 rec to decoder in

front out from decoder to Tape 1 Mon Ch 1 Ch 2

rear out from decoder to Tape 1 Mon ( Ch 3 Ch 4)

You can play your CD4 through Tape 2 Mon inputs

The dolby Inputs and outputs are just the same as tape inputs and outputs
Just by another name

Hey there rusty randi. Q eight lizard king and disclord ... it worked!

It sounds great... I never knew arti. Garfunkel could sound so good. (Or ....so much worse.)

Got any thoughts on what those 'composer a' and 'composer b' switches do on the function knob?

Such a solid forum. I look forward to passing on some knowledge in the future.

Ok... one last question; I think.....
Since I am playing the phono into the pioneeer : what quad mode do I set it to?
It cant be 2ch because it mutes the other two channels. Any matrix setting will try to decode... so I want it to 4ch mode right? Its the most discrete?

There is no way to overide so I have to chose one.

I could just get a pre amp for the sqw and avoid all of this.

Read you tomorrow!....

plug your T/Table into
the CD4 demodulator phono in
the from 2 channel out of the CD4 demodulator to phono in on your Receiver

Take 4 channel out of the CD4 demodulator to Tape 2 Mon inputs front and back

If you want to play CD4 switch the tape 1 monitor of and tape 2 on
Switch CD4 to 4 Channel on demodulator

Then if you play SQ switch tape 2 of then switch tape 1 on
Switch Demodulator to 2 channel

If you just want stereo switch both tape monitors of
