Please post your thoughts and comments on this HiRez 5.1 BluRay "Pure Audio" release from UMe.

Absolute waste of money. Voices too loud no rear sound. Had to turn it off and put the movie Blu ray on which is incredible.

Have to agree. So much could've been accomplished properly remixing for surround ........but no attempt was made. A mess. No wonder Universal's blu ray launch failed .......SO MISERABLY [NO pun intended].

I voted 6 and even that's too generous!

ok, so i took Goona's comments on board and revisited this one for the first time in approximately 6 years (!) and picked the 5.1 mix apart scrutinising all channels.

Goona is quite right, from a surround point of view this is virtually worthless, only 5 tracks out of 20 have any Rear channel activity to speak of and most of that is muted and/or double stereo containing the Front channels' info., there is very little if any perceptible discrete Rear channel content in the mix.

also, just as an aside, its only a 5.0 mix, there is absolutely nothing going on in the LFE channel.

the Rears are mostly silent, particularly throughout the lengthy dialogue passages.

lead vocals are at full volume in the Centre with some lower level replication of that content in Front Left & Right resulting in the vocals being overloud relative to everything else which is almost always all squeezed up in the Front channels only.

2 marks for content, 1 mark for sound quality & 1 mark for being Hi-Res 'sorta Surround', a "4" (and that's being generous).

Is this the Russel Crowe version?

Oof. So all the Russel Crowe tracks are probably EXTRA brutal!

the singing of pretty much everyone involved is something of an acquired taste tbh and those vocals are brought hugely to the forefront by the surround mix.
it sounds great but the mix is really a waste of 5.1, there's lots more they could've done with the content, instead they decided to showcase somewhat unvarnished vocal stylings of Crowe et al, not everyone's cup of tea.. say no more šŸ¤
