well I just listened to the first 2 discs.
In stereo or should I say 2.1 the bass is really good ..the sound is good....and the video quality is quite good too...
and in short that's how it should be viewed

In 5.1 it's quite clearly all fake...like a pro logic 5.1.. the fronts tend be down in level and the rears are quite loud and the centre has the voice with a mono presentation of the music....on quite a few of the tracks with an intro before the singing, there is a more even front and rear level spread and even some fake panning in spots with a deliberately cut centre speaker......someone was trying to impress with fake trickery before the rot set in.... because as soon as the vocal comes in, the whole sound stage collapses, with the fronts going down in level....if you want nice surround out of this put the stereo mix through a sansui qrx in Qs mode or a surround master ...but don't bother to go to the dvd menu and select 5.1 ..it's not discrete and it sonically sounds worse than the stereo track.....

Sister Christian by Night Ranger is the only track that is bearable in 5.1 on the 1st 2 discs...it's not discrete but at least it wasn't destroyed sonically and seems to give an ok surround presentation ,when they electronically forced the stereo tracks into fake 5.1

and for the curious ones...."she drives me crazy" is nothing like the mercedes benz demo disc..like all the other tracks that I heard on the first 2 discs it just sounds like the normal cd played through an average pro logic decoder when you switch it to 5.1 on this 3 disc dvd set...that said the stereo 2.1 of it is very good on the dvd and in some instances it's better than the stereo sound of the cd version..... but surround?..no way...

Please forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is a surround master, how do I use it, hook it up, etc? Please refer me to other posts that may elaborate upon this. I have everything run through HDMI and only have my blu ray player, which does cd, dvd audio, and sacd, as well as usb to play flac, aac, etc files.

It's a box that makes surround from stereo sources...

It has analog stereo (RCA) inputs... & outputs via 4.0 -> 5.1 analog out, so you need a Receiver with Analog inputs...

It decodes QS & SQ (if you get the SQ model) as well as being able to create surround from a standard stereo source..

Very cool!!!
