...Which planet could fit in the space between the Earth and the Moon?

Hee! Trick question.

I happened to be walking out to my car at around sunrise the other day, and something was HUGE in the eastern sky - maybe Venus? Had to just stop and gawk for a minute, sentient ape that I am, trying to comprehend the incomprehensible.

"Hello Earth"

Here's another tricky question for you to ponder as you gaze into the unknown.

What mundane (but essential) article of clothing do we never see in Scifi Flicks?

Here are some cool Apollo pics, too... http://www.businessinsider.com/nasa...silicon_alley_insider+(Silicon+Alley+Insider)

Not quite... Something more in the middle. ;)

Joe Namath Netted Slingshot Briefs? (Wait, that has appeared at least once...)

Oh CRAP. I shoulda guessed that one.

P.S. <watches next clip> So that's Collective Soul, eh? How is it that so many of these lead singers get so far along in their careers without ever learning now not to hold a cardioid microphone?? It sounds like he's singing into a pair of astronaut diapers. Sheesh.

Brett, when you move to Plut:confused: please don't forget to send me you "Pmail" address.

And, as a record of our life here on earth, you can bring this video as a peace offering https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xs2ZIsPbCA

{actually, Brett, LISTEN to this song in its entirety....it's really quite UNIQUE...and sometimes brilliant}

Loved it! It's going in the capsule. But...first, I've gotta get my moves down...

Sorry for the topic-creep, but did everyone catch this little moment of impossible space-science awesomeness?

SpaceX Booster Sticks the Landing

Unbelievable!

Oh yeah! I was fortunate enough to see it live on CNN. It was thrilling to watch. Thanks for mentioning it. I was going to post something about it, but wasn't sure how others felt about this science/astronomy stuff. ;)

SpaceX is still a long way from a Millennium Falcon, but... an important first step.

Fantastic news! :upthumb

And since we're celebrating the winter solstice, here's a cool video about the Earth's motion around the Sun...

Wow, good for you! I've been so busy lately, I didn't hear about it until after the fact, or else I would've watched it too.

Lute, that video is fascinating. I never realized how eccentric is Earth's orbit, not to mention how variable and downright wobbly over time! All these complex angular relationships between celestial bodies really boggles my mind a bit - I'll want to watch this several more times in hopes that more of it will impress itself upon these dried-out old synapses.

The closest I've come to messing with this stuff was back when I was a kid, just learning about spreadsheets. I'd felt for a long time that the days here seemed to grow shorter at a faster pace during the approaching winter solstice, and the subsequent lengthening of the daylight hours always seemed to drag out more slowly. I wondered if this perception was real or psychological, so I smacked up a spreadsheet of weekly sunset times over the course of a year for this area. The resulting graph is mostly a sine wave shape as one would expect, but there is definitely a slight skew, the upward (springtime) slope being more gradual than the downward (autumn) one. This made me feel a bit better - it wasn't just winter dread after all (although I'm sure that is still a factor, heh). I assume that the skew is caused by the fact that I live in a northern latitude, and that an equatorial location would produce a more symmetrical sine plot (and a southern plot would be skewed in the other direction), but I'm not sure about all that (yet).

Anyway - thanks for the link. :)

Yes - you watch the video and you have to tell yourself that what you are seeing actually did take place!

Yes! I mean it really does look like they just reversed the video of a launch sequence. I couldn't help but think, oh man, the moon landing denier/conspiracy nut jobs are gonna have a field day with this one. But to hell with them! This happened! And it was truly amazing.

For me I was reminded of TV science fiction shows back when I was a kid that showed rockets landing exactly the same way as the SpaceX did. As I watched the video I was simply overwhelmed by the fact that it isn't science fiction anymore.
