Oh man - you guys are a bad influence....lol.

I'm super in the dark about what it takes to go Quad. Seriously....

Is it a matter of a standard table, with a special cartridge...and a surround master?

No special cartridge needed for matrix systems like SQ & QS. You will need a way to port 4 analog inputs into your system, and maybe some analog bass management.

So, next question is....obviously I would be looking at getting longer RCA cables to reach my receiver. Maybe even 10' or so. Any problems with cables that long in terms of sonic degradation? Point is - I would likely be placing the table several feet from my other equipment. Just the way it likely has to be....

That record cleaning machine is not an option. It is a must!

I'm not disagreeing...but certainly overkill for someone with a 'modest' analogue set~up. I read the specs and Michael Fremer's towering recommendation (he bought the review sample).

Stereophile once reviewed a $60K step~up transformer and pretty much said the same thing. Nineteen K phono cartridges and turntables just under $200,000.00........

Hey, if I were a billionaire, I'd have them ALL......and a Monet over the turntable. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JXQyS7ajyiE/UAdKerCeH1I/AAAAAAAAARw/mDtBtEi2D-8/s1600/monet_scogliera.jpg

If that's before the signal is pre-amped you could have a problem. If that's post RIAA pre-amp you should be fine.

Yeah that's a point to consider too. You'll also need a phono preamp unless your existing gear already has one. If you need to purchase one you can get them in very small packages. Keep the preamp near the turn table connected with very short leads, then longer leads from the preamp to the pre/pro. Phono preamps range in price from $50 to $5000. Consider something like this http://www.musicdirect.com/p-93371-pro-ject-phono-box-mm.aspx

or this

Maybe the best solution for you is something like this... https://emotiva.com/products/turntables/usb-1

Its all complete. Has a built in phono preamp, and even a converter to feed a digital signal out.

Come on now. Just ONE Monet?

Speaking of overkill, GOS, take a gander at this puppy http://www.musicdirect.com/p-40748-audio-desk-vinyl-cleaner-record-cleaning-machine.aspx

What fredblue (Adam) would love to see under his tree at Christmastime to put his huge collection of SQ/QS vinyl in better than virgin condition!

Sort of resembles the engine for a Smart Car, wouldn't you say? http://gatmemphis.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/smart-car.jpg

Haha.. I just scrub the worst offenders under the sink with lukewarm water, some slightly diluted fairy liquid and a non-scratch scourer sponge.. it doesn't get them to better than virgin status but it helps with a lot of the really grubby ones! Of course ideally one would look to getting mint or sealed discs but it can be tricky/nigh-on impossible with these 40-year old + Quad LPs..

Or Adam, you could simply play Madonna's 'Like A Virgin' when you're scrubbing those vinyl treasures with diluted 'fairy' liquid under the sink and call it a day. The POWER of suggestion :ugham:

Hey Fred! When you wash your records, consider using a new paint brush and scrub gently with the grooves. You will find it is better than with a rag or sponge. I like a brush with nylon bristles so it can't be contaminated with mold or label dyes. Here is what I use. http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00...qid=1449874746&ref_=sr_1_fkmr0_1&sr=8-1-fkmr0

Interesting..! Thanks matey! (y)
(You know, by happy coincidence I have quite a few paintbrushes lying around - no-one here has ever asked what I do for a living but now you have a clue.. ) I will try one next time I get a-scrubbin' one of the old records!
