About Tormato. To rt & doppelbock: I truly have found peace with the concept that we all have different musical tastes. I don't need to push Tormato on anybody but...

I would say that the music itself stands up rather well.

On The Silent Wings of Freedom - One of the best songs YES ever did. The bass work just might even be Chris' best.
Future Times/Rejoice - Pure YES with all partners playing equal. A mini-Sound Chaser but with Wakeman on Keys
Release Release - A fantastic rocker a la YES
Madrigal - Simply elegant with a beautiful antique harpsicord, classical guitar & vocals.
Onward - Now that Chris is gone, this song is even more precious & poignant.
Arriving UFO - Bombastic

We all know that Eddie Offord left YES during the recording and that the master tape wasn't played back with the correct dolby setting, causing the 2.0 master to have a muddy sound. That is the problem with Tormato. Not the music. Rick Wakeman commented on how GFTO was mostly done by the time he arrived, but that Tormato was a true equal YES contribution. I think that shows.

I personally ask the group to support Tormato's 5.1 release(doesn't mean you have to buy the bloody thing!) for the furtherance of our wonderful hobby. I do think that a 5.1 remix from the multi-track with the correct noise reduction bias would be a revelation. Onward indeed!

@EdisonBaggins: GFTO always had a harsh & brittle sound to it. A dubious choice by the producer. I dream that a 5.1 remix will soften it up and make it more full sounding like CTTE or Tales.

I kinda like Tormato (most of it) and would enjoy a 5.1 release.

I don't know if you have heard the Hi-Res download for this album, I didn't find the sound too objectionable (but I'm not a Tormato sound quality specialist).

With all this talk of "Tormato", I decided to give it yet another listen to see if I would warm up some more to it, and my opinion of it did not change at all.
There are some really amazing tracks on there, like "Don't Kill the Whale" and "Onward".
There are some OK tracks like "Future Times/Rejoice" and "Madrigal".
Finally, the rest are just terrible, some of Yes' worse songs and recordings they have ever devised.

IMHO, I don't think any amount of remixing can save that record. Not only are their major issues with some of the compositions, along with major deficiencies in some of the recorded sounds (which maybe remixing can fix…), but some of the production decisions just leave me scratching my head in bewilderment.
The choice of guitar tones and keyboard sounds is really off throughout most of this album, and this is something that some of the Yes members readily acknowledge.
Steve and Rick were both trying out new sounds/instruments for a good portion of this record, and it just did not work out well at all.

But what above all else is the major flaw with this record? It all stems from the fact that Yes did not hire another producer after Eddie Offord left the sessions.
They got away with not having a producer for "Going for the One" because the compositions and arrangements were on-par with the quality of work produced during previous years, but they were so totally lost on "Tormato", and it shows.
A strong producer could have turned that album around, but instead, they released it as is, leading to the turmoil and fallouts that ensued afterwards.

Anyway, all of the above is the opinion of yours truly, so feel free to agree or throw a Tormato at me. ;)

The only version I have of GTFO sounds like pure ass. Does anybody have a recording that actually sounds good? I like the songs, but not the production.
I don't have this version, but I would assume this is one of the better sounding versions out there:

Which release do you have, @EdisonBaggins? I only have the '03 Rhino and have never had a problem with the sound of it, but it is not as "full" or "lush" as Fragile, for example.

From my experience with the '03 Rhino, I wouldn't call it "harsh" or "brittle," just somewhat "empty," missing some low-mid frequency warmth.

Hi Thomas, :)

I have the HDTracks version and its the best Tormato I know of, and I've heard them all. However since the multi-track was run with the incorrect Dolby Tape bias when it was mixed down to 2.0 that makes all 2.0 versions lacking. But it does seem the HDTracks has the earliest generation 2.0 tape RIP.

We desperately need a new remix from the multi-track(with correct Dolby bias). So all us YES lovers will be happy and all the Tormato "non-enjoyers" will know they are unsatisfied with the genuine original recording and not a muddy mistake. (y)

@rt: Very kind of you to give it another go.:music To me, On The Silent Wings of Freedom is the bee's knees. I saw YES play that live, twice in the late seventies and it blew me away each time. Chis had such complete command of the bass on that song.

I believe you when you say that song did sound very good live, and yes, Chris does have some great bass parts on that song, but the studio recording is an abysmal disaster that obscures anything that's actually good about the song.
If Steven or anyone else were to remix "Tormato", they would have to completely throw the original mix out the window and start fresh if they wanted it to sound any good…

Here's what OTSWOF sounded like live. It is night and day compared to the studio version.

It was a standout in their live shows at the end of the 70's. That clip led me to the one below, which I've never seen before. Footage of the band running through the song in the studio:

So Steve has the audacity to carry on with using the YES name without inviting Jon back?

This is a thread about the situation concerning the multitrack tapes of Yes albums like "Going for the One", "Tormato", and "Drama" and the possibility of them getting remixed and reissued.
It is NOT about the current lineup of Yes, so take your negativity about them elsewhere.

Kthanx

It's been a long while since I last listened to Tormato actually. If what you say is true Ryan about no amount of remixing could save that record, well, I say for Mister Howe to get Mister Wilson to start working on it right away. Have him take all the time needed to see if he can come up with the most coherent mix possible. :)

Nah. Not only would Steven's time be better spent working on his own music, but there's other Yes records that he would be much better off spending his time remixing than worrying about "Tormato". ("Going for the One", in particular, springs to mind.)
Plus, because Steven's already said that he won't be spending as much time on remixing classic albums in the coming years, preferring to spend more time on writing, recording, and touring his own music, his time would be better spent finishing up the remaining 70s albums from Jethro Tull (aka the 'folk trilogy'), remixing more albums from Roxy Music and Tears for Fears (you know, once Universal finally release "Roxy Music" and "The Seeds of Love"), and most importantly, remixing any and all XTC albums where tapes can be found! (Not to mention there's also a few more Gentle Giant albums that would be better off getting remixed compared to "Tormato", if the tapes can be found, that is.)

:)

A stupid album name, and an awful cover! What were they thinking?

The two are related! The album was going to be called "Yes Tor", named after a Tor on Dartmoor in Devon.

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place...ed2935f76ebdfcb!8m2!3d50.6936007!4d-4.0105626

Hipgnosis were contracted for the album art but the proofs they submitted were so horrendous the band couldn't choose one. So someone (Wakeman claims credit for it) squashed a tomato on one of them and came up with the name Tormato instead.

True story!

BTW I have always liked that album, warts and all. Probably something to do with the tour that followed being the first gig I ever went to.

Tormato, Tormahto Let's call the whole thing off. (oh, and I come down on the side of a redo for Tormato...I for one, like it and would only like it more in surround i'm sure (y))

Tormato - in the way you Americans pronounce it, just made me think of the movie Sharknado all of a sudden, except they're tomatoes instead lol. Actually, wasn't there already a movie about Killer Tomatoes? ;)

Tormato - A much maligned album but one that i happily spent hours , each week listening to .
I should have made it to the Empire Pool to see them but a very sudden enrollment at collage prevented me from going .....
My friends loved the concert though ........and made sure i did,nt forget it for years.
There was an article in Melody Maker or Sounds interviewing the band in the studio some months before the albums release and i remember the writer ( chris welch ? ) heaped tons of praise on the sessions and new music he was listening to.
A good "Yes " album ......it most definately is.

Tormato has some GREAT STUFF on it....

It'd be interesting to hear the "real" version (soundwise) of the songs because of the whole Dolby snafu (the backing (edit / overdubs) tracks were recorded with Dolby but the rest weren't, hence the uneven sound of the album)...

Someone on the Yesfans website has posted that someone in the know has told him that the original tapes for Tormato have been transferred to digital. Putting 2 and 2 together, this hopefully means that a surround remix of this album is on the way at some point :) Excellent news for any Yes fans out there. While its nowhere near their best album, imho they've not done anything as good since.
