Default No-Man's Tim Bowness - 2 surround releases!

    Hi all,

I've just been given the go-ahead to let you know that two solo albums by Tim Bowness (aka "the half of No-Man that's not Steven Wilson" and "Henry Fool") are just about to get a physical release alongside his new album.

One is "Stupid Things That Mean the World", which was previously only available as a download for a short pre-order period for the CD.
The second is his new album; It's not been officially announced yet, but I believe it will be called "Lost in the Ghost Light"

Both will be on a single bonus DVD-V in 24/96 DTS format and released with the CD of the new album. I don't have a release date yet, but keep an eye out on Burning Shed for news.

They were both mixed by Bruce and as well as being excellent albums (listen to any of the recent No-Man albums to get an idea of style) the are very discrete and very dynamic mixes and right up there with Bruce's best surround mixes.

Excellent! Always up for more stuff from Tim, and it sounds like we'll get a couple other releases in 2017 from him too.

Neil, thanks for sharing this good news On Tim's new album and that is a good way to get the other surround to us.
To bad they aren't putting these on a Dvd Audio but DVDV with 24/96 is second best choice I guess.

Hopefully, a lossless FLAC download will be available for the new album, too! I made sure to preorder both Stupid Things and Bruce's solo album to get those surround mixes. I loves me a physical release, but I loves me some lossless even more.

    Here's the Burning Shed preorder:
    https://www.burningshed.com/store/no...duct/271/8218/

I have to say (even though it's technically lossy) two 5.1 albums together on one release for a little less than $20? That's pretty good!
But there is something I do not understand. It says that Steven Wilson mixed and mastered the stereo mix for the new album, yet Bruce Soord mixed both of the albums in 5.1, so why didn't Tim just have Steven mix the new record in surround? That's what I don't get…

Anyway, here's what Burning Shed says about it:
Tim Bowness follows 2015's Stupid Things That Mean The World (Top 10 in the UK Rock, Vinyl and Prog charts) with a release unlike any in his back catalogue.

Mixed and mastered by Steven Wilson, Lost In The Ghost Light uses a core band of Stephen Bennett, Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree), Bruce Soord (The Pineapple Thief), Hux Nettermalm (Paatos) and Andrew Booker, plus guests including Kit Watkins (Happy The Man/Camel), Steve Bingham (No-Man), David Rhodes (Peter Gabriel / Kate Bush) and the legendary Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull). Andrew Keeling (Robert Fripp/Hilliard Ensemble/Evelyn Glennie) arranges for string quartet and flute on three of the album's songs.

Lost In The Ghost Light is a concept album revolving around the onstage and backstage reflections of a fictional 'classic' Rock musician in the twilight of his career. Ranging from the hypnotic opener Worlds Of Yesterday to the wistful climax of Distant Summers, via the thrilling rage of Kill The Pain That's Killing You and the orchestral expanse of You'll Be The Silence, the album features some stunning solos and harmonically rich compositions that represent Bowness's most musically ambitious work to date.

Jarrod Gosling provides the fantastically detailed artwork, which includes a visual history of the career of the concept's subject.

Limited media book CD/DVD edition with hi-res stereo files and Bruce Soord 5.1 surround mixes of both the Lost In The Ghost Light and Stupid Things That Mean The World albums

All pre-orders come with a signed postcard and a link to the download release Songs From The Ghost Light (featuring alternative versions of songs intended for the concept).

    Pre-order for February 17th 2017 release.

Wilson's a busy guy, and he has recently expressed his desire to focus more on his work as an artist rather than an engineer. Meanwhile, Bruce has expressed his interest in doing more mixing, both stereo and surround. But I wonder: did he mix the surround for this new album from stems, or directly from the multitracks? If from the multis, did he start with Steven's stereo mixes and spread it into surround, simply use his mixes as reference, or start completely fresh? (I know SW uses Logic; don't know about Soord.)

Should be an interesting comparison listen for that reason alone.

Excellent move to include the previous album in surround as well. Here is the cover of the new album.

Yeah that's what I don't get. You would think that since both men (Wilson and Soord) have the ability to mix in surround (and stereo) that it would be easier to let one man create both mixes (especially since it is usually easier to create the surround mix after the stereo mix is completed)
If I were Tim, I would have just had Bruce Soord create both mixes, but in a way, it's nice to see that Steven & Tim are still involved with each other to a certain degree.

Oh and in response to your other post, yes that shadowy figure does look familiar, but then again, that's what people said about the figure on the right of the front cover of Tim's previous album…

Default Re: No-Man's Tim Bowness - 2 surround releases!

Here's another news bit on the release from Tim's page:

Tim Bowness announces the release of his fourth solo album, Lost In The Ghost Light. Released on 17th February 2017, through InsideOutMusic, the album has been mixed and mastered by Steven Wilson and is unlike any in Tim’s back catalogue.

Bowness utilises a core band comprising Stephen Bennett (Henry Fool), Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree), Bruce Soord (The Pineapple Thief), Hux Nettermalm (Paatos) and Andrew Booker (Sanguine Hum), and is also joined by guests including Kit Watkins (Happy The Man/Camel), Steve Bingham (no-man) and the legendary Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull). Andrew Keeling (Robert Fripp/Hilliard Ensemble/Evelyn Glennie) arranges for string quartet and flute on three of the album’s songs.

Lost In The Ghost Light is a concept album revolving around the onstage and backstage reflections of a fictional ‘classic’ Rock musician in the twilight of his career. Ranging from the hypnotic opener Worlds Of Yesterday to the wistful climax of Distant Summers, via the thrilling rage of Kill The Pain That’s Killing You and the orchestral expanse of You’ll Be The Silence, the album features some stunning solos and harmonically rich compositions that represent Bowness’s most musically ambitious work to date.
Lyrically, the album addresses how the era of streaming and ageing audiences affects creativity, how a life devoted to music impacts on real / family life, and how idealistic beginnings can become compromised by complacency and the fear of being replaced by younger, more vital artists.

Tim elaborates: “It all started with me seeing a sixty something jogger in an expensive tracksuit rifling through the vegetable racks at my local Co-Op. His intense glare combined with his thinning long grey hair and Mick Fleetwood beard left me wondering which veteran Rock band he’d once played with. This got me thinking about the moment when music first came into this person’s life and whether it still informed his music making in the present. Other questions followed about the tensions between commerce and art, career and idealism: Could the creative ‘spark’ be lost then re-discovered?; What were the costs of dedicating a life to music and how much did ‘real’ life get in the way of the ‘magic’?; What was the effect of the changing nature of the industry on music itself as physical objects d’art became unpaid streams?; Were, as Brian Eno suggested, professional musicians like blacksmiths, echoes from another age and, if so, what was the impact of that realisation on a performer playing to an ageing crowd? Clearly, I thought too much!”

Jarrod Gosling (I Monster / Cobalt Chapel) provides the fantastically detailed artwork, which includes a visual history of the career of the concept’s subject. The album will be available as a limited CD/DVD mediabook – including a 5.1 surround mix by Bruce Soord – and gatefold LP + CD & digital download.

The album is now available to pre-order from Burning Shed, including an exclusive hand numbered gold vinyl LP + CD limited to 400 copies. All orders will receive a signed artwork postcard.

Anyway, I just went ahead and preordered the CD/DVD set from Burning Shed.
I hate that it's a lossy DVD-V disc, but I could not pass up the opportunity to get two albums in surround sound for the price of one.
That's a good deal, and I do love Tim's voice, so away we go!

This new album sounds very interesting in deed, thanks for posting the information on this Ryan. I am impressed with Tim that he is including the previous album's surround on this one as well as Tim did promise that there would be a way to get the third album in a physical copy version for people like me that missed out on that 5.1. I would have never thought that it would be included as a bonus like this on the new album, way to go Tim

For people that might not know what I am referring to its when the third album(Stupid Things that mean the World) came out you only got the 5.1 if you did the preorder from Burning Shed and then you could download a flac of the 5.1 as they did not put the 5.1 on a physical copy. Where I totally messed up was that the preorder period was the ONLY way of getting the 5.1 at all, once the release date happened there was not even a chance to get the 5.1 flac download any more due to this was the licensing agreement that the record label made with Tim.

It does say this is a limited release for the cd\dvd so I will be putting my order in pretty soon so that I don't miss out again.

Yea, I've pre-ordered this one, 2 for the price of one, too good to pass, had a listen to the taster on the burning shed e-mail, sounds interesting enough, I was hoping it would not be too much like no-man (I own Schoolyard Ghosts & Together We're Stranger) which I find very depressing.

Very excited about this release! A must buy for me.
By the way, if someone still looking for the first No-Man's live double DVD "Mixtaped" with excellent DTS 5.1 sound mixed by SW (a long time out of print by now), you have a great chance to buy it at extremely low price just 11 euro!!! here. It's a Finnish online (and offline if you live in Finland) store with low international shipping prices. Check it out. There are only 8 pieces left in stock, so hurry up.
    Some nice pics (not mine):

So I asked Lisa at Burning Shed the following:

Me: "Lisa, will there be a download for the 5.1 flac as well as the stereo for this release?"

    Lisa replied:

"Sorry, I honestly don’t know and it’s unlikely we’ll hear much about what downloads (free or otherwise) there will be until much nearer the release date.
I wish I could be more helpful!"

Might not hurt if a few more people ask for the 5.1 flac download as it would be a nice perk for the people preordering from Burning Shed.
It does already say there will be some alternate cuts as part of a download for this release, so why not the 5.1 flac as well,win/win for everyone.

Here's the track "You Wanted To Be Seen" from the album, sounds great to me....can hardly wait for the full album and 5.1....

A review of Tim's new album "Lost In The Ghost Light". Looks very promising to me!
And also new interview with Tim Bowness.

What?? How did I either, forget or simply not see this???? Maybe I originally thought it was just a physical disc of his past album...which I purchased download anyway.....

ORDERED!!! Man - now I'm excited! I even went a few more dollars and insured the delivery...for tracking purposes don't you know. (getting paranoid lately )

Tim's posted some notes on the album at his blog, always an interesting read:

Just a heads up to let everyone know that this release ("Lost in the Ghost Light") will not be available physically in North America, so the only way to get this release is as an import through a European retailer (like Burning Shed).

    Hi rt

    I preordered this through amazon.ca. ASIN: B01N0MIZ7X.
The same is available on amazon.com and uk as well. It shows 1 disc and shows as an Import, i am sure this is the only version available as cd/dvd.
