Now that we're in 2017 and the Oppo UDP-203 has shipped, the discussion has turned to the upcoming UDP-205 optical disc player plans from Oppo.

On the AVS Forum, they have a "Official Oppo UDP-205 UHD Blu-ray player Anticipation Thread".
There, most of the speculation centers around whether the DAC chip in the UDP-205" will be different from the DAC chip in the UDP-203.

There's also a UDP-205 discussion over at the Modwright Forum where Dan Wright will be discussing his plans for modifcations to "hot rod" the UDP-205 from Oppo in the "Oppo UDP-205! The New Truth Mod! The Next Level!" thread.

As with the UDP-203, Oppo's goals are to add 4K video to the earlier model (BDP-105) and to keep the price within $100 of the earlier model when the UDP-205 is released.

Brian, Happy New Year and thanks for those two most useful links.

Is it my imagination, or from the enclosed photos doesn't the upcoming 205 appear beefier and more robust than the 203 (or is it just the photographic perspective)?

Also, the consensus seems to be that the 205 will contain a Sabre DAC versus the AKM* DAC utilized in the 203 rendering it more "Audiophile" in nature.

There are a few very good DACs that use AKM chips, including the highly regarded Bryston BDA3.

I don't think the ESS DACs are more audiophile, I believe it depends on which how it's implemented.

I'm sure you're correct but having been an avid OPPO 'collector' for years and even utilizing HDMI, I did note that in conjunction with the upcoming 205's beefier power supply and other implementations, that each and every OPPO (I presently have the 105) has been significantly better than its predecessor and I expect the 205 to be no exception.

There is no doubt Oppo will do a very good job, regardless of the DAC they use :)

And I didn't realize Apogee's products are US made. That is excellent IMHO

That's true with all DACs.

Some people assume that a newer DAC chip/DAC chip number automatically means better performance. But the circuitry used with the DAC chip and its design and implementation is often even more important than the DAC chip itself.
Just because a newer model DAC chip is inside that doesn't automatically mean that a new DAC will sound better than one which uses an older DAC chip with an older part number!

And that assumes the DAC uses a chip. These days some DACs don't use a DAC chip at all.... :)

Really no different than the form factor difference between the 103 & the 105.
The 105 is also heavier than the 103. 17.3 vs 10.8 lbs.

Consensus is the ES9028Pro DAC. 105 has the ES9018 DAC.

Oppo has announced a few more details on their upcoming UDP-205 disc player....

Lossless High-resolution Audio
Audio format support has been expanded to multi-channel DSD64/128, as well as 192kHz/24-bit PCM used in high-resolution lossless formats such AIFF, ALAC, APE, FLAC and WAV. (DSD64 is played back in native mode or converted to PCM, DSD128 converted to PCM.)

Best bet is to drop Oppo an email and ask.

Oppo CS is second to none! I had a conversation on another music forum where the poster was stating Oppo did not have the ability to play high res by the analog out ports. I had Oppo respond not only to me, but to him, on a holiday. I remember my son buying another brand blu ray machine that refused to function correctly, a call to the manufacturer did not result in any satisfactory response, other than take it back.

Weighing the pros with the cons, this is quite possibly THE most impressive unit OPPO has ever built: http://oppodigital.com/blu-ray-udp-205/ Scroll down for maximum impact.

Although support for Dolby Vision will [like the 203] be available in the near future via a firmware update.

Sign me UP!

OT: Now, if ONLY I could find a 4K 3D Projector which casts an image like LG's fantabulous OLED Curved TVs!:yikes

Yet one of the cons is a fatal one for those of us that play multi channel flacs. It just seems like it wouldn't be that hard to include a multi channel USB DAC since the multichannel DAC already exists in the box...

Yes, it would be nice if OPPO did include that, skindzier. I wonder if it could possibly be implemented with a future firmware update?

It's just that I do find this machine impressive as I've been involved in audio/video for so many years that at this price point it seems like a veritable bargain. Remember those massive $4K Laserdisc players which by today's standards are truly primitive?
