From 1977 (a little late in the CD-4 game) the Shure CD-4 stylus.
replaced my JVC SHIBATA 4MD-20X with this Shure M24 H . Wotta VAST IMPROVEMENT it made to my CD-4 disc playback. Absolutely a noticeable improvement on playback.!!!!

WELL WORTH the investment :upthumb
That's what I bought as a student, but never any CD4 LPs () when I discovered the price of the decoders!!!
That's too bad. I think I paid just under $100.00 CDN for my Harmon Kardon 44+, and there were other low priced demodulators in Canada back in the day.
I think the Sansui demodulator was cheaper than their QS variomatrix decoders ! Go figure ?
I paid more for my CD-4 compatible Dual turntable than my demodulator.
$100 back in the day what was a lot of money. you could buy a brand new car for what a quality stereo system cost back thenThat's too bad. I think I paid just under $100.00 CDN for my Harmon Kardon 44+, and there were other low priced demodulators in Canada back in the day.
