    Default QQ "Sections" discussion

    Also, short rant here:
What's the deal with all these other similar threads popping up?

    Like these:
    http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/foru...with-a-5-1-mix
    http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/foru...Sgt-Pepper-5-1

It's like are people not even bothering to at least take a look in the forum to see if there's already an existing thread for such a topic?
This is now close to the fourth time this has happened for this particular topic, and it's really starting to annoy me.

We don't need more than one thread for this particular topic!

Next time, why don't people actually do a more thorough look through QQ before posting another thread on an already covered topic?
    It's not rocket science, people!

I hope both of these other threads will either be merged with this one or deleted altogether…

    Surround yourself with the best.

Coming soon in 2017: "Songs from the Wood" (Jethro Tull); "Misplaced Childhood" (Marillion); and "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"

Thank you! Something as popular as the Beatles, surely there is an existing thread. Please look for the topic first.

Oh I completely understand that, and if this was a topic that had not been discussed in several months or years and a user wasn't able to find a thread for it, that's understandable, but people post in this this Sgt Pepper thread almost every day, so it's not that hard to find when first getting onto QQ and viewing the Activity Stream.

Use the Google "site" search operator:
    format: site:<url of website to be searched> <search term>
    example - site:http://www.quadraphonicquad.com sgt pepper

To use this example copy the example "site:http://www.quadraphonicquad.com sgt pepper" (without the quotes) and paste it in the Google Search bar. Change the search term (sgt pepper) to anything you want to search in QQ Forums.

Calm down. I did look - in the surround sound forum since that's the discussion we are all having...right? I didn't think a post would have been created in a blu-ray forum for a box set containing cd's, a dvd disc and a blu-ray.

Although I will say that, imo, this forum is badly organized.
I'm not blaming anyone or ranting but it is just a fact that finding what you want via Search or the Forum homepage is an exercise in futility.
    Too many format specific sub-forums.
Yes the Super Deluxe Edition of Pepper has a BD disc but it also has 4 CDs and a DVD so where should this thread really be?

    Ok, here's the deal.
Before I became a mod, if I got word of some potential news of a 5.1 mix that was not format specific and was not guaranteed, I would put the thread in the 'rumors' section. If it was guaranteed to come out but was not format specific yet (or ambivalent, like not specifying DVD-V vs DVD-A/V) I would put the thread in the 'surround sound - non format specific' section. If the surround-related news was format specific, then I would put the thread in the appropriate section based on its format.

Then once I became a mod, I had the ability to move threads that I had started around to other sections as necessary.
(And in some instances, I had created a thread in a non-format specific section, another mod had moved it to the wrong format section, then I would move it to the correct format section, but I digress…)

For "Sgt Pepper", I think this thread began its life in the "Music Matters (Non Surround)" section (probably because I never thought in my wildest dreams that they would actually mix the album in 5.1 and include it as part of this reissue) but then once surround was confirmed for release on both Blu-Ray and DVD-V as part of the box set, I moved the thread to the Blu-Ray section.
Why? Because given the love for high-res audio on this forum, I figured that 9 out of any 10 members on this forum who would buy the box would mostly play the Blu-Ray for the full high-res experience.

So anyway, this long-winded answer is my way of saying that I actually do put thought into where a thread should go while creating one, and then if it needs a better spot later on, I'll move it as needed.
(Not everyone is as thorough or detail-oriented as I am, and while I don't always live up to this standard, I try my best to do so.)

FWIW, I believe that in instances where the package contains multiple formats, the best version included should dictate where it lands.

Trust me RT, I think you're a real asset here and I appreciate the work you do.
Indulge me in a suggestion or 10:
Forget the separate DVD-A, SACD & Blu-ray forums and just create a hi-res forum.
Personally, I don't see much value in differentiating between formats, surround and 2-channel in any hi-res format because the releases are often mixed between the 2 with most have a Redbook layer as well.
This forum doesn't have the hyper-action like SHF and in reality few do.
Boxsets could have their own forum as they are often mixed formats.
Downloading doesn't seem to be particularly popular but a separate one for that allows reasonable focus for the few of us here that do regularly go that route.
I do like the separate one for AF as it focuses on just that.
Quad vinyl, hardware and legacy releases can have their own sections.

Personally, I am more than OK with leaving things exactly as they are, but if things were to change, it would be at the sole discretion of Jon.
(Though I'm sure he would confer with at least the other mods and maybe the forum at large before making such a decision.)

Now back to Pepperland, shall we?

Personally, I like the way things are and always appreciate a peek into "Rumours" section to find out about the Vast majority of upcoming surroundpossibilities which more often than not, do indeed result in a Surprise Surround Release !!!
    =================

Not all upcoming announcements occur there and I wish they would , but people are not perfect , so we should just tolerate the few odd reports elsewhere.

I usually find 'em eventually , it's all a part of Quad Sleuthing .

Now a return to Sgt Pepper !!

Bugger !! I hope the Quad 73 mix isn't gone for good , and now that Giles is aware of it's past exsistence, maybe, just maybe we can get it in some later bizarre form , it's kinda late to hope too soon though.

FWIW An Engineer s/b asking for " ANY AND ALL tapes, multis, etc." (reference Steven Wilson ) , awfully important as "Abbey Road " was rumoured to have a Quad mix as well.

Folks, you have to remember that this forum is 13+ years old. 13 year ago, SACD and DVD-A were available at your local Media Play's and Record Worlds. I used to get PM's every week about "Why isn't there a forum section for...."

The structure is a foundation and to bunch it all together would be a nightmare for me. As some of you may have noticed, I don't come around here as often as I did because, quite frankly, it's been 13 years and I honestly don't care as much about this stuff as I did 13 years ago. The failure of DVD-A/SACD (commercially), the removal of DVD-A from the car I drive, and the failure of the AF surround SACD program, among other things, have taken a LOT of wind from my sails.

I have seriously considered, and am still considering, closing the doors on this place because it's just too much of a pain at times and honestly, if it was not for people like timbre4, HomerJAU, rtbluray, Bob Romano, bmoura and others I am forgetting doing a lot of the heavy lifting here, this place would be gone by now.

So take what's here and enjoy what you can. We're all not here forever, and neither is this place. The internet forum is slowly going the way of network TV. Social Media sites are all the rage, and there's nothing wrong with that. That's the way of the World.

I know it's a lot of work and MCH is not nearly as big as we thought it would've been, but , please...I implore you ...do your best to keep this site alive!!!!
It is one of the MAIN PAGES I visit when I get in the 'net..and I don't visit many...this is also the ONLY FORUM I visit daily...I can't stand the SH site and all the "ass lickers" over there...this is the only "down to Earth" place for Pros and for consumers who are into MCH....
I am aware of other "nice" Forums, but none are "pro MCH", and let's be real, MCH is far from dead and I think will always stay alive somehow...

    Get your hopes up!

I agree with the Kap'n. This board is a wonderful resource. I know I am guilty of taking it for granted sometimes, but I do want to offer my sincere thanks to Jon and the mods for all the work they put into it. It is by far the best MCH forum on the web.

To keep this on topic, can anyone point to any substantial evidence of quad mixes being created back in the 70's? Or is this all just a lot of speculation and wishful thinking?

I'm approaching 60, didn't really have the money to get into Quad when it was around, but as a student bought a few SQ LPs, built a decoder, then nothing, Quad vanished. Then in about 2001/2 I spotted SACD/DVD-A, and surround music was in my grasp, I had the money, I bought the titles, and as the world has changed my interest in surround music hasn't. The titles have become fewer, but I have to say that without Steven Wilson and his interest things would be a lot worse for surround music. We've had, and are getting some high quality surround music, still on disc, but the ephemeral world of downloads does loom. I discovered all this and the great people of QQ, especially Jon without whom...... or I'd still be forever searching the net for hints of 4.0/5.1 music being released as I used to. The only reason I'm a member of QQ is because it is a 'private forum', the openness and unfettered greed of the data harvesting social media networks is not for me. They need their wings clipped IMHO. But the thing with Jon's post is that I've suddenly realised how much QQ has become part of my daily routine! So thank you Jon, its much appreciated for how ever long you decide it will continue.

    177 SACD (159 Multi, 18 Stereo), 218 DVD-Audio/DTS/DD, 10 Blu-ray Audio, 14 SQ LPs, 2218 plain old stereo CDs

Sgt. Peppers in 5.1 is the best news since the Jeff Beck japan release of Wired in 5.1.This album was my 1st listen to hard rock, I will never forget the day I 1st heard it. You guys sort out the rumors and bullshit that is so prevalent on the web today. If not for the efforts of the few, I wouldn't even know about half of the High res music I do own.

anyway, hats off and kudo's to the folks who are involved with helping keep QQ alive and well!

I am 66 now, and really don't get social media like FB. I feel it's kind of stupid to put your life out for everyone to examine. I am very grateful for this forum,, and the things I have learned, especially about Oppo.

We all truly appreciate all the hard work that goes on in the background to maintain this site. It really is an exceptional one and I often visit it because the members here tend not to bs and get all riled up like some other forums. Thank you!

As a side note: I pre-ordered the box set

Is that the only option? When you decide that it is time, I would hope that you could "retire" and pass the torch to another person or persons.

This forum is one of the few places that I always go to when I am at my computer. It is often the only site I visit the entire day. It an escape and relaxing safe place to go. I am not a social media guy and this forum is one of the few places I feel at ease sharing anything. I love my music in all forms and always enjoy the discussions here.

We're not going to solve this today. Please know that some discussions will take place in the weeks ahead.

I sincerely hope that the writing is not on the wall that someday we'll log into QQ only to find it's disappeared....forever! It is, IMO, one of the MOST civilized and INFORMATIVE WEBSITES on the internet. And I do believe that through the auspices of Jon Urban and his trusty/vigilant moderators, that we have been privy to surround music that otherwise would never have seen the light of day because what other website has so valiantly heralded the remixing of stereo albums in surround as the true art form that it is?

Without this brilliant voice, doubtful that surround music will have a future.

As it is, we've always been a niche market but, IMO, a somewhat powerful one and through QQ we have discovered music we would've otherwise overlooked/ignored.

That so many musicians, engineers, et alia have visited and posted on this website for years is a true testament to the power of a forum which singlehandedly has kept the format alive despite consistent rumors that it was a moribund format.

Perhaps I'm prematurely pulling the trigger on this but I can truly understand Jon's position. Maintaining a forum is a yeoman's job and we all must remember that Jon has unselfishly NOT derived a monetary reward from this site and is to be commended for his dedication to its growth which literally spans all corners of the globe.

Hopefully, some of the moderators might keep the flame alive.

    One could ONLY WISH!
