I've been using the Lafayette SQ-L on the composer B setting for
straight SQ decode. Pretty sure the SQ-W has the same circuitry.
My question - does the tate-II have a similar setting -
or is it only the enhanced "wave matching" SQ setting?

my reason for using this setting - if interested - is to take my
4 channel tapes - run the rear channels though the decoder, then take
the rear output of the decoder, and mix it with the straight through front
channels of my tape.

as long as I'm careful with the balance and levels (keeping the
rear channels 3db down) - I end up with a fairly effective SQ mix.

Thanks

Just the rear ? Assuming your placing the 2 chs (rear discrete only), as opposed to 4 in and 2 (SQ) out.

I use an "outboard" Encoder btw, and can put two in encode , but stereo only, in the front 2ch inputs and adjust the rear vol ctrls to achieve an "enhanced" SQ quad .
Results will vary.

yes for SQ - the rear channels play as ~mono 3db down on stereo playback. When you play a
SQ record the rear channels play as stereo across the rear, but the front play as ~mono 3db down
(across the rear).

So - working from a 4 channel source - if I feed the rear channels into the SQ decoder (as
thought they were standard stereo) - they will com out the rear output of the decoder
as ~mono 3db down (but properly phase shifted.

I then mix the front channels of my original source, with the rear channel output of the decoder
and I have a SQ encoded 2 channel recording. Works like a charm. I was just wondering if the
Tate II has a straight sq decoder on one of its settings.

thanks
