I'll do the others later if someone doesn't get to it before me first!

Holy Smokie Dave!!! :yikes

I'll put those in, but I won't do the "unreleased and announced", as that would confuse things for those wanting to make a comp.
Can't believe I missed some obvious ones. Next time I'll use my glasses! :)

I totally understand not including the unreleased stuff in the list jon, I just thought it was too interesting not to mention. :)

I agree. In some twisted sadistic way, I love reading and hearing about the unreleased stuff. :smokin

Sorry, that's a mistake on my part, I mixed it up with Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting which is of course on GBYBR.

Crocodile Rock would of course be on Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player, another one of the unreleased Greg Penny 5.1 mixes.

Those Stevie Wonder unreleased quads would sell well today if released! Never knew they existed.

I feel relieved... was wondering how did i miss such a thing...

What's really weird is that this didn't show up at least in Japan, where Motown released 16 titles...

If you're as old as I am--hell, we're both ancient around here, Jon! :D--I just squint at the labels these days and hope for the best....:sun

Those lists bring back memories, some good, most horrific, at least for the songs, what I was doing in those days were at times the kind of partying I wish I could forget, believe me...:yikes

The 1973 list has one track that was never issued in stereo, Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together." That one was flat mono on 45 and Lp (though the latter ran much longer), while its B-side had a kind of panning effect. I think the rest of the album was stereo, though.

King Harvest's "Dancing in the Moonlight" was tight stereo on their Perception Lp. It was a cover of a 1970 45 by the forgotten Boffalongo, a group from New York (I think) who went nowhere, though somehow the guys in Harvest picked up on it, made it punchier, a little more lively, almost 1972 garage rock of a sort. Took a long time to creep up the charts, as I recall, and the only major Hot 100 hit for Perception, which was around for four or five years before it went under....

1974 had its moments. Later, great gems like "Rock Your Baby" and "Rock the Boat" would be considered early disco, but to me they were just great records I knew were going to be big despite the anonymity of the artists (and by modern standards, they're still obscure). It's regrettable that ABBA has never taken the 5.1 plunge, because even considering all the talent involved, some of their best are simply Great and Grand Productions, regardless of how good the song or the singing (I'd rather listen to anything by ABBA over most of the Bee Gees' discofied rubbish).

1975 has only a few I'd make a habit of hearing in quad, but among the best is Van McCoy's "The Hustle," which was just about the best disco styled track I think I've ever heard, stereo or quad. The exception that proved the rule: namely, that most disco, like most easy listening pop, really did suck. I mean, some of the reprehensible crap on these lists that sold a million remains a sad reminder that some people will buy anything, however bathetic, syrupy, or ridiculous (Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey," from 1968, was the first 45 I smashed to pieces in anger. Then, if course, I tracked down a mint copy for my archives....:D) Yeah, I know....

1976 and disco...thing is, it's a real shame (beyond the obvious) that quad pretty much died this year, because if any genre was perfect for quad creativity, it was disco and a gal like Donna Summer, or her producer, Giorgio Moroder, whose "Chase" ('79) short 45 or long Lp, was not only an Oscar winner but a mesmerizing instro track, period. I can think of quite a few disco pop hits that would have made for fine quad, and I'd have surely listened to them more today if they were.

And Jon, while you're at it, you might want to put 1972 into the list as well, since that does have some significant quad, including some Chicago, and glorious absurdities like "Popcorn," which is so stupid it's good, and in quad, it's transcendent. I never liked the sound of the 45 or stereo Lp, but in quad this hit (another that took some months to take hold) reminds us of that old record company standby: the stand alone, silly novelty hit, which today is pretty much extinct, right? But there was a time, friends....

ED :)

Hey Ed! Hope all is well. Yeah, "Brain cells are falling from my head" - and hair and other stuff. As we Baby Boomers shrivel up, we tend to remember old stuff more than new. Still, I can't remember every track from every album that came out 30+ years ago, so I missed a few.

AND!!! In your honor, I edited post #1 with the 1972 Top 100, and I KNOW there are some I missed, but I'm just not yet inclined to research some, so if Dave or anyone else want's to post the omissions, please. I'd appreciate it. (y)

And how right you are. Looking at some of those songs, it makes your stomach turn. It's hard for anyone to believe that on American Top 40 radio in the '70s, stuff like "Disco Duck" was in heavy rotation. :yikes And just a few years earlier, "Rubber Ducky" was as well.

What were we thinking?

Hi Jon! :smokin All things considered, things are (and this is considered exceptional) stable at this time. Had some cardiovascular work done recently to make me feel better, and so far, so good. I consider myself lucky to still be breathing, honestly, but I'd hate to have missed the PEPPER BOX (and look forward to a possible WHITE), so I've gotta hang on a while longer.

FYI, I went in and boldfaced a handful: Elvis, the Carpenters, Redbone, Al Green, and the Stylistics.

Well, you know there was nothing wrong with US, of course.

I find the hits that offend me the most are the syrupy and obvious ones, with 1968's "Honey" almost a perfect (as it were) template of the kind. Why people buy into bathetic muck like that is beyond me; I mean, everyone can appreciate the occasional sob story, but when you ladle it on so thick to the point of choking--that is, the words AND the music are transparently fraudulent--that's when I'm ready to go skeet shooting. 1972's worst major hits were, of course, Wayne Newton's "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast" (even for him it was beyond the pale); Gilbert O'Sullivan well meaning but self-pitying "Alone Again (Naturally)"; Sammy Davis' absolutely appalling "The Candy Man" (from a film my wife likes and I've never gotten into); and Michael Jackson's "Ben," an actual love song to a rodent! Not that adoring your pet's a bad thing, but from an atrocious film came what has to be MJ's worst recording from anywhere. But then this was the year that, after so many great, legendary hits, Chuck Berry returned with one last biggie, and it had to be something on the low level of "My Ding-A-Ling." Sheesh!

Don't know if I've ever mentioned this here, but down through the decades I've kept all my favorite--and I mean, the truly essential--45's and albums segregated in their own space. I brought all my 'greats' with me from N.H. Looking them over, there are just over forty for 1972, which might offer a hint of how elite I think they are. The list begins with B.J. Thomas' "Rock and Roll Lullaby" and ends with Carly Simon's "You're So Vain," with some songs from the above Top 100 of the year list, but also some that weren't big on the charts, including Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" (which only got to #41 in Billboard!), Nilsson's "Jump into the Fire," "Alice Cooper's "School's Out" and "Elected," Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs. Jones," The Move's "Do Ya" (IMO superior to the later ELO version), and one single that didn't make it in America, Roxy Music's "Virginia Plain." A real lost gem--at least on AM radio--was Van Morrison's "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)" which came nowhere near the Top 40, which remains to me inexplicable (it got quite a bit of FM airplay).

ED :)

Ed got most of them, but there are a few more 1972 omissions:
