Nice comparison but I would have drank more and looked for the ugly woman.

Yes, I totally understand where you are on this one. It took me until today to pull the trigger and finally make a purchase at the lowest price, thanks to you. I discovered R.E.M. when their ep (Chronic Town) was released, purchased Murmur, all the IRS releases and the two Warner releases up to Out Of Time. I never cared for them after that but still heard a few of their singles on the radio and didnít much pay attention because I was into all these Ďotherí bands from the 80í and 90ís. It wasnít until they re-released their catalog around 2005 when I snagged a copy of In Time (1988-2003) which included a DVD-Audio disc of their hits and started to familiarize myself with some of their later songs. I always couldnít stand ďEverybody HurtsĒ. I used to skip that track all the time until, one day, my Mother told me that she loved that song. Well, sheís passed on now and I make it a habit to listen to that song the entire way through every time I spin that disc and make myself like it, in memory of her. Needless to say, I wanted the rest of their catalog that was released on DVD-A but I waited too long and only managed to pick up Document. In the past couple of years, I ended up with getting all their downloadable albums and say they are hit and miss. An example, a fan favorite, Monster is the album I listened to only a couple of times because I donít much care for it. Although, the other albums have some really good tracks, I would rebuy them all just to get them in surround and that goes ten-fold if they were all done in Atmos. It really does make that much a difference over plain old yesterdayís news, 4.0 and 5.1 releases.

I think including at least 1 CD is a good way to capture a little bit of cross-over sales, though I imagine CD interest to be steadily dwindling these days.
Actually I like some CD's...but they aren't the newer remastered(compressed)pieces of crap...despite all the moaning and groaning and hissy fits about discs not being 24/96 on here...the reality is that there are a lot of CD's that have excellent sound quality that surpass the "hi rez" releases...DR numbers that these "hi rez" discs can't come close to...in my case I can't tolerate bright sounding compressed music...everybody has their preference...that is mine...and the truth is that there is a massive amount of great content that was recorded on CD's that will never see a hi rez treatment...so instead of depriving myself of great music...I turn to CD's for this music...I'm looking forward to hearing Steven Wilson's mix on the Chicago cd I recently ordered....

Enjoy your CD's...there is room for all formats in your music collection

I started purchasing CDís again. I stopped purchasing downloads because it got to the point that Iíd have to wait until someone Posted the DR numbers before I would get it and even when I did, the CD version I had sounded better. Then, I started looking at the pricing and told myself that it was time to stop. Even if I wanted to purchase a download now, I canít. I no longer have a PC and only rely on my iOS devices. Although, lately, Iíve been trying to tell myself why I donít need a turntable. 😆

from the article it appears Dolby used it as a marketing device to convince industry execs into adopting atmos technology so why not release it to the public and make even more money??? I guess Sir Paul, et al didn't want the original album "bastardized" that much but that didn't stop them from letting Dolby use it "in house" to the top players in the music world?

Also, is that why there is a "mysterious" six channel (Dolby TrueHD EX 6.1) mix on the release? Was the sixth channel derived from the atmos mix (or is the EX part of the TrueHD like a "virtual" speaker?)
AFAIK, the Atmos mix of "Sgt Pepper" was not ready in time for it to be included on the recent box set release, and I also think I remember hearing that the 5.1 mix is not a fold-down of the Atmos mix.

Coming soon in 2017: "Eye in the Sky" (The Alan Parsons Project), "Black Sea" (XTC) and "A Farewell to Kings" (RUSH)!
Already released: "Songs from the Wood" (Jethro Tull); "Misplaced Childhood" (Marillion); "Three Piece Suite" (Gentle Giant) and "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"

Looks like the admins will have to add the Dolby Atmos logo to the masthead.

Received mine from The Moose. Well packaged, well protected. Box is perfect. Boy does it smell new....

The individual discs are in the cardboard sleeves, which I sometimes hate...but these slide out oh so easy. Watch it, they may slide out when you don't want....I'd rather have it this way so they don't get all scratched up.

Audio sounds excellent. I don't have any other version of this, so nothing to compare to. I don't have Atmos......so there's that too. Nice book. I expect the extra CD's will be fun to listen to...we'll see. It's a big box, slightly bigger than an album I suppose. An inch thick...

    Good stuff.

It does look kinda of center heavy while everything else is subdued, but I'm not gonna judge until I've heard it. I get the feeling Atmos is giving more for that "fill the room" effect versus discrete placement. I imagine some would think guitars in the ceiling only would be kind of weird.

I'm more than content with the old mix for now though...only prob I ever had with it is that the backing vocals are dialed down a bit (most of the old R.E.M. DVD-As are like that).

Looking forward to more Atmos music releases

    I have no idea, lol

What I can say is that I have a 5.1 surround system (no Atmos yet) and this is a discrete surround sound mix.
Is is better than the DVDA-V 5.1 surround mix? I don't think so, but it's definitely not any worse. It's just different.
I think this mix takes more liberties, but it's still a very rewarding listen.

the article about when they mixed it in atmos said that some of the time the atmos was used just so two instruments wouldn't have to 'compete" in the same space (channel).

I'm sure there are instances in those graphs where if you compared the atmos mix to the old 5.1 you could find where the frequencies in the 5.1 channels were separated in the the channels of the atmos mix, if even just for a second or split second

My box arrived from Amazon US today -- and I DO mean box! Well-packaged, so no complaints there.

I have the two previous surround versions (the standalone DVD-A and the cd/DVD set), so I'll do an A / B / C and report back here soon.

Just opened my R.E.M delivery. Perfect packaging by Amazon, nothing bent. The cardboard sleeves for the 4 discs are nice and loose like Gos said, but I will still use my mini Japanese protectors. Very irritating that the 4 cardboard sleeves are too big for the cut outs in the box. Either an error in packaging production, a stupid error, or I own the unique rare miss matched release.
Getting the machine warmed up for my 5.1 listen soon. I have the previous DVD A, so no expectations.

Regarding the cardboard sleeves. I know what you mean, but it seems they planned it that way and you simply slide the sleeves underneath the cut out area. Odd, but seems that is the plan.

Yes, ODD. Never have I seen that. When I opened the box they where scattered all over and the discs where half way out of each sleeve. Maybe next year I will be selling my mountain of hard discs once i get the ripping thing dialed.

    I'm almost positive that it's:

    Left Front
    Right Front
    Center
    Low-Frequency Effects
    Left Side Surround
    Right Side Surround
    Left Rear Surround
    Right Rear Surround

This is possible but the purpose of Object Based Audio is to have sounds float in space, not so much one sound or instrument playing discretely out of one speaker. Think Pokey-Vision 3D. Itís a lot more fun, amazing and real with sound.
