But this album is freaking awesome with great harmonies and some great rocking songs tooooooooo:banana:

Okay, this is probably going to bring ridicule, but my favorite Jayhawks album is "Rainy Day Music". :couch

No Ridicule - but perhaps they took a step back from where they were heading to play it safe - compared to Smile, granted their more rocking guitarist left after Smile........so not sure they had anyone to match

A lil too acoustic and the harmonies did not catch as much as Smile ........ummmmm was a lil let down for me - had some koo points tho - seemed the harmonies did not attach to me as much @:

Did you get the one with the extra tracks??

You gonna make me spin this again lol - but it super koo

Glad to see there is another fan

If you want a tiny slice of Jayhawks in surround, I highly reccomend The Thorns self-titled album from 2002, which came out on 5.1 SACD. A sort of 'supergroup' of Shawn Mullins, Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge, there are some really nice harmonies on the album, and they cover the Jayhawks song 'Blue'.

The 5.1 mix isn't perfect by any means, but it's miles better than the boxy and overcompressed stereo mix.

I'm a huge Matthew Sweet fan, I've seen him three times. I really wanted to like that album but I just find it boring and over-produced. There was a version with two discs, the second called "Sunset Sessions" (stripped down versions) which I find to be preferable to the initial release.

Jeez, I have a two disc set, SACD and vinyl of an album that I don't really like. Am I mentally ill?

Terrific band. Listen to ”Waiting for the Sun” and then Tom Pettys ”Mary Jane’s Last Dance” :)

I like the sound of these guys... can't believe they've been around so long and I've never heard of them:mad:@:

I like the "Alt Country" genre in general (especially Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Wilco (although the latest stuff not as much), and Drive By Truckers)

Thanks for the heads-up, snood!

I now have "Tomorrow The Green Grass" and "Hollywood Town Hall" on the way(y)

I lived in Minneapolis during the years the Jayhawks were playing bars around town and around the upper midwest, trying--for too long--to get nationally noticed. Man, they were a great band. I like Smile and especially Rainy Day Music well enough--lots of great pop songwriting on both albums--though for my money they were at their peak with Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow the Green Grass (which, to judge by a couple of SBU upmixes I've heard, would really shine with some professional surround treatment). I have a real soft spot for Blue Earth, though. And last year's Paging Mr. Proust was a return to form.

I hope you've listened to Jason Isbell's last three albums. Absolutely brilliant! I rather like Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton too (though none of them are particularly strong on harmonies).

Jason is the kind of songwriter who comes along once every 20 years or so. In the 70s we had John Prine. In the 90s we had Lucinda Williams. Now we have Jason Isbell.

Definitely have to check him out.

By the way: the 'Hawks served as the backing band on two notable albums in the past year. I want to like Wesley Stace/John Wesley Harding, but it's just not clicking for me. Ray Davies' Americana, on the other hand, is really lovely.

Here, I'll try to help you out with that. This is such an amazing lyric to me, enhanced by knowing that the female harmony is his wife Amanda...
