Hello, I just stumbled upon this forum as I have just recently "rediscovered" my vinyl collection...

Back in the mid-70's I purchased a German Import pressing of Dark Side of the Moon in Quad. I had a nice Stereo system which I upgraded over the years but never actually put together a Quad system. In college in 1979 my roommate had a Sansui receiver with a Quad decoder (have no idea now what model). We combined our systems (my turntable, his receiver, both or our speakers). The DSOTM was the only Quad record that I owned and he did not have any and had never even setup his system that way.

We cue'd up that record and it was probably the most incredible thing I had ever heard. I had listened to and owned some pretty good gear up to that point but that mix just completely blew my mind.

To date, it's the only quad record I've owned - I still have it. As a poor student I couldn't afford to buy quad equipment and it was somewhat impractical anyway for the places that I lived. By the time I could afford it (mid 80's), it was out of fashion. It wasn't until I got my first Pro-Logic system in the late 90's that I remembered what it was like.

I still don't have a quad system but I am toying with the idea of putting one together...

Hello to everybody, I registered 2-2007.
And I had an Akai 1080DB and a Marantz 4270 Quad.
Sold them both. I went for 2 channel again.
I needed some help and never asked.
I received a birthday notice from the forum and I had just totally forgotten about it.

Been registered and reading this site since the fall when I discovered Porcupine Tree and wanted to learn more about the band.

I have an Oppo 980, Yamaha HTR-6060, Athena Point 5 speakers with a Klipsch RW8 sub. Might upgraded the speakers at some point with a DIY project.

Currently working on finishing the basement into a dedicated hometheater/surround sound room.

QRX9001, slightly modified by my brother, is my bedroom system. I need to hide there as the open plan living room would not meet the WAF. (Wife acceptance factor). Mostly I listen well past my bedtime. THe sound is just to sweet. It all started in 1973 with a second hand Sansui QR4500. Still in the family!

I've been lurking for about 5 months. I'm 56 years old and live in Northern Illinois. Slapped together a surround system 2 years ago.

RECEIVER: JVC RX 5060 (WALMART) $140
    FRONT: JBL DECADE 26 (1971) $ ?
CENTER: VENTURI V52 CLR (EBAY USED) $35
REAR: JBL N24 (EBAY USED) $75
SUB: JBL 135 (EBAY USED) $60
PLAYER: OPPO 970HD (EBAY USED) $50 (a steal)

I really like the movies and television in surround but it's the music that I can't live without. Did this so I could here Beatles Love in surround. I will never go 2 channel again.

another "Welcome" to all of you who have joined and posted here. You'll find there is not a lot of "chit-chat" at QQ, but if you need help or questions answered, you should be in the right place.

Besides, we love to hear your stories of how you started in surround and how you got here!

Just joined. New member here from Frisco, Texas. I came to the site after doing a search for Pink Floyd's DSOTM in DVD Audio and found the very informative post on that subject here. Been waiting and hoping to get this for years, so my quest led me here. I had no idea there was such a version of the album available until today. I was aware of the SACD version of course, but i want the DVD Audio version.

I have a DVD Audio player in my 2004 Acura TL and the sound is just great. The Beatles Love is my favorite to date. The sound is amazing. I love the songs and it is new way to hear old favorites. I wish the entire Beatles catalog would get such treatment. Perhaps after they make enough money from the upcoming September remasters, they will consider it down the road? True, perhaps you could not do much in terms of surround sound with much of the Beatles catalog, but the added clarity and overall improvement in sound by itself makes it all worthwhile to my ears.

I have the following in DVD Audio - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Pet Sounds, End of the Innocence, Door's Perception box set (very disappointed in this one, i much prefer the sound on the regular CDs), Hotel California, Tommy, Brian Wilson Live at the Roxy, Sheryl Crow The Globe Sessions, Elvis 1s, Led Zepellin's Live 2 dvd set (the name escapes me right now), and a handful of others.

I really wish we had many more titles to choose from and it is disappointing that there are so few available. This looks like a great site to come to for information and to communicate with people who share the same interest. I'm glad I found it.

Hello all, and thanks for the mountain of valuable info you share here.

Reading the other introductions takes me back to college-days experiments with Lafayette and, later, Sansui equipment. At the time I got my first real job selling stuff for Pacific Stereo, I was using a Thorens table to feed my Harmon Kardon 75+ receiver -bridged to double the power along with a jerryrigged Sherwood circuit board rear amp- driving four BIC Venturi speakers that my former roommate still uses. My first CES was 1975.

Being in the audio and video business through the 70s, 80s & 90s, I've tried and owned lots of different pieces, finally settling down with a mostly Meridian system. They released the HD621 HDMI processor this year which allows me to digitally connect blu-ray for the first time, and has re-awakened my longtime hobby, so here I am. Gratefully.

whoops, made a couple of posts before seeing this one...

hi everyone. I came here because I got all 3 of the King Crimson reissues, have been a surround nut since the early 90s, and cannot for the life of me figure out how I missed this forum all these years.

I like how Robert Fripp once posted that surround formats were done because in the past, friends hung out and listened to records. Now everyone listens to ipods in solitude. I hope surround formats make people social again!

I am one of the unfortunate who have the Pioneer 578-A multi disc player. It wouldn't play mlp lossless. When I did the firmware upgrade, it helped a bit, but my two dvd-a's from Rhino (Fragile, Brain Salad Surgery) are now distorted when I play the lossless tracks. Wish I could find another player that wasn't $500 or so.

anyhoo, I listen to multi channel mainly for classic rock and jazz. Was lucky to catch some quad/surround mixes live in concert (which is in another thread that I started). Nice too meet everyone here.

Gudday Everyone...My Quad stuff consists of - A Sansui QRX-6500 - Sansui QRX-7001 - Marantz 4400 and a Marantz 4070 Integrated. I think I like the QRX-6500 the best. Great tuner Great Amp Great EVERYTHING. Even though it's the 1st generation of the proper QS matrix stuff, I'm quite happy with the way it decodes 2 channels into 4...but then havn't heard the QRX-9001. Cheers.

Hi I've had some trouble loggng on due to forgetting my log in stuff etc. stuff but hey I'm definitely interested in this forum. As a matter of fact I'm listening to my Q8 Band On The Run right now and grooving on the quad mix

I have some DVD A's and about a hundred twenty Q8's (a few doubles) most of which I bought new in the mid seventies. I used to have a quad eight player in my 53 chevy. It was a Sony and i still have it somewhere.)

It's great to join the cult!

    Hello,

I just recently picked up my first quad amp and since then I have been very intrigued by "the original surround sound" and all. I'm working on building a good quad setup and just wanted a place to discuss this stuff!

Hi. I joined a while ago and have made a couple of posts, but have only just found this thread.

I never owned any original quad equipment as I was a little young at the time (although I did buy Mike Oldfield Boxed on LP in the hope that one). I have recently acquired a basic surround sound system and have been busy acquiring some of the fantastic quad conversions that have been available on DVD-A and DTS-CD as well as a few commercial DTS-CDs.

I have also appreciated the great reviews of original quad releases that members have shared.

    Hello everyone,
Just joined after looking at the Quadraphonic LP Catalog. Though I am only 33, I've been fascinated by Quadraphonic Sound for a long time and I've yet to fully experience it. I collect vinyl and Quad LPs are a must due to it's rarity (many of them are Columbia SQ). While we're in the age of 5.1-6.1 Surround Sound, I've wanted to own an SQ Decoder and haven't not much luck finding one, except on Ebay. I do, however, own a 5.1 Surround Home Theatre System by Regent and for retro reasons, a Panasonic 4-Channel Receiver Model # SA-504. The latter has a discrete/Matrix mode but at the present, I am trying to figure things out to fully experience my SQ albums. I've even attempted to try my SQ albums on the Regent Home System and still I'm left boggled about SQ sound.

Someday, I hope to own an SQ Decoder of some sort and have the answers to my queries finally. Great to meet all of you.

Welcome to the quadraphonic forum. There are many members here with a great deal of knowledge concerning all things quadraphonic. All you have to do is ask a question and someone will usually answer.

As information, could you give us an idea of yourself, ie where are you located, what sort of quadraphonic system, if any, do you own, just general stuff to give us some idea of how to answer any questions you might ask.

Again, welcome to the wonderful world of Quadraphonic sound.

Hey, folks. I just joined this forum last week after chatting with my daughter about cleaning out my attic, and doing a Google search to see if I could get my Sansui receiver fixed. I'm REALLY old school, owning a Sansui QRX-9001 receiver, Akai GX-630D-SS tape deck, Technics SL-1300 turntable, four Bose 501 Series II speakers, and even Pioneer SE-Q404 4 channel headphones, ALL PURCHASED NEW in the mid-70's. Am I a hoarder, or a knowledgeable quadraphile? I had my Akai rebuilt in 95, but that shop couldn't fix my Sansui. I reconed my 501's myself about 10 years ago, and only retired them a couple years ago when I bought an Onkyo 7.1 surround receiver and speakers. OK for TV, but sucks for music. I want to build my system back to the way it was in 1977, when I used to sit and rotate in my recliner with a cold beer! So, I am here to do some research, get some advice, and eventually enjoy music the way it was meant to be heard -- in QUAD!!

Oh, yeah, I still have the '70 Torino Cobra I acquired in 1976. It was a good decade for me.

    Hi,

Just joined last night. I picked up an old Realistic Receiver (STA-47) with a "Quatravox" setting about six months ago and it spurred a lot of confusion and intrigue about 4-channel recordings. Later picked up my one, and only, quad receiver; a mid-70's Hitachi SMR-5240 with settings for SQ, RM, and Discreet. I've been trying to figure it out since I have way too many speakers and nothing to do with them. I grew up in the 70's and have had many quad recordings pass through my hands but never had the inclination to explore the potential of the medium. Now I do and discovered I actually own some quad recordings. Here's my brief list:

    Keith Jarrett - Backhand
Keith Jarrett - Death and the Flower
Holst - The Planets (St. Louis Symphony - Walter Susskind)
Gershwin - An American in Paris (St. Louis Symphony - Leonard Slatkin)
Bach - The Art of Fugue (Ars redidiva Milan, Suppraphon records)

Also have some DTS 4-channel recordings that I play through an Echo Mona Audio Interface w/multichannel output). One of my favorites so far is Mahavishnu Orchestra "Birds of Fire" and Santana's "Caravanserai." I like hearing the details in the instrumental parts that are hard or impossible to isolate in stereo.
