OK, here's my very first post here, although I signed up quite a long time ago.
I've been interested in Quad ever since the early 70's when I would drool over all of the systems in the Lafeyette catalog. I used to leave the catalog on my father's living room chair, open to a moderately priced rig, hoping that he would get the hint and buy one. I was still in high school so I couldn't afford one. I guess that he couldn't either!

Any way, my set up consistes of a Yamaha Yamaha 5660 Integrated Receiver, Pioneer DV 563a, 4 Polk RTI 38, Center Polk CS30 , Kimber Silver Streak Interconnects.

    Welcome Donald!

I used to lust at the Lafayette catalog myself. I think I wanted an LA-84, but I'm not sure!

    Hello all,

I've just joined today. I've recently purchased my first QUAD equipment. I picked up a Dynaco Quadaptor and a Kenwood KR-9940 Quad receiver. I haven't received either piece yet - so I've no idea how they'll sound. The rest of my setup is rather hum-drum. I've got a Dyna FM-3, a Pas-3 Preamp, 2 Harmon Kardon Citation II's and a NAD turntable. For speakers I have a pair of Accoustat Monitors that need to be rebuilt after a flood and a pair of Pioneer CS-99A's.

I do have 1 question - does anyone know of a thorough quadraphonic discography?

    Best regards to all,

    Luther

Howdy: Just joined yesterday and I am actually a real person. I have not been active in quad for about 10 years and was one of the original "Quadtrade" subscribers. Though I still pick up the occasional LP, the equipment is in various states of disrepair and I am not an electronics technician. I am just catching up on learning about the digital formats and where I might want to drop some dimes for equipment....SACD, DVD-A, Both, etc. Lots of good information on the forum and the site in general, thanks to the creators. Just joined yesterday. I don't really have the time to read up or write, but I'll chime in every now and then. I have a rather large Q8 collection - one of the largest, probably. Over a thousand different, and probably 2-3000 spares (that I'm not ready to get rid of yet!).

Hi - I first heard a quad system about 30 years ago. I've never owned one myself, but am interested due to the difference in mixes between stereo & quad versions of the same record. To this end I have a few quad LPs - Pink Floyd's DSOTM (4 different copies), WYWH, Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar Babies & a couple of Steely Dans - Countdown to Ecstatsy & Pretzel Logic.
I do have quite a few SACDs & DVD-As, played on my Linn Unidisk SC, but haven't as yet gone for a full blown surround system, listening in stereo at the present due to lack of space.

    Hi all:

I just discovered this site as I have been getting heavily into quad (super late, i know) and have about 30 or so quad titles of all different formats...

I won't even bother trying to list my gear as my speakers are basically a HTiB but my amp is a kick ass Pioneer VSX-D812 that i play most stuff back on (which were converted to DTS or DVD-V)....

anyways glad I joined...as I am an audiophile (or wannabe - LOL) and work in the "industry". I also recognize quite a few members here from other forums & trackers....

should be great. expect a lot of posts from me.....

*sorry for the short post ..was at work...*

It will get expensive if we don't band together. There is alot of trash, that is trying to milk the cow.

i would never milk the cow. i am a lover of music and i do not own, nor have the money, for a proper quad setup. this is my only way to enjoy this wonderful format. my brother had quad and my mom had quad. i did not :-(

When I started recording professionly, I researched the techniques and figured I would love to mix and produce "new" quad recordings and even as a kid in the early to mid 80's i thought the idea of more than 2 speakers would be awesome, if done correctly.

    tee hee...

If i had the coin, I would add to my vinyl collection and setup, but currently my work and my woman don't permit it...

Checking in from East Tennessee... been chasing old vinyl at the fleas and thrift stores for maybe 15 years and acquired the quad bug along the way. My quad system is a long way from where I'd like it to be, but I'm currently running:

    Pioneer QX8000 receiver
Panasonic RS-862s receiver (8 track source)
    JVC 4dd5 (CD-4 demod)
Dual 604 turntable with Walco cartridge (the pride n'joy Clearaudio is upstairs with the stereo system!)
    speakers in transition right now...

With maybe 50-60 quad albums (this and that found cheaply) and a couple of 8 tracks. Hoping to pick up a better matrix decoder soon, and move into DTS as well.

A hearty THANKS to all the regular posters as there's a lot of great info here... enjoying trying to track down answers to all my questions by sorting through old posts...

Good Evening everyone, I have been "Lurking" for a while so please forgive me
Have been an active member of AK since I was bitten by the vintage bug and have since put together a 70's surround system that is not quite complete, along with a modern HT system. I look here for multichannel info.
My "70's" gear consists of a Marantz 4400 (I have 2 ) one a green scope from '74, the other a blue scope from '78 w/SQA-2 demodulators Marantz 4270 (also 2) ADC Accutrac 4000 TT with original LMA-1's that actually work (also have 2) Hmmm is there a pattern here LOL... Marantz 6200 TT, Rat Shack LAB 420 with AT440ml and AT15sa carts that i interchange, Marantz CD400B CD-4 demodulator, Marantz 5420 and SD6000 Cassette decks, Dokorder 8140 R2R. The only 70's speakers I have left are my pair of JBL L100A's that I originally purchased in 1977. Other goodies are a Marantz CDR631 CD recorder, a couple Marantz RC4 remotes, a Marantz 2385 (In beautiful condition I might add) a JVC JR-S600 stereo receiver. and a JVC 200disc CD "jukebox".
My modest HT setup is just a JVC RX-8040B surround receiver, a Pioneer DV578A for DVD, DVD-A and SACD. Speaker array is the aformentioned L100's, and a JBL lineup of E-60's EC25, E10's and a E150P sub I also have a pair of Bose (go ahead and flame if you wish..I like them, and that is what matters)
901 series VI. Video monitor is a Vizio 37" LCD.
As you can see I am mainly into the music and the HT does what I need it to do. I look forward to interacting with everyone and perhaps getting a chance to share what I have learned both from experience and from other audio collectors/users like myself. I am not an audiophile..I am probably reliving my youth when I couldn't afford to buy all the gear I wanted

Great looking 4400's. I have two QX-949's(love those blue lights and the scope), 4 Kenwood KL7070's which here were sold as KL888A. Dual 1229Q and a Teac 3340. I going to set up another system in the bedroom as soon as I get more speakers and another Dual.

Thanks to all for the welcome!
My downfall is space to hook it all up It is really becoming a chore to swap gear in and out, Trying to find a rack that will hold this stuff (weight issues) can be frustrating because I really don't have time to build one (although I saw a "flexi" rack on a web site a while back that looks interesting) had lusted after the 4400's since i was a teenager but it would have taken a lot of delivered papers and bussed tables to come up with that kind of dough
It's as if I am living in 1975 again! I actually listen to my gear and not look for faults. sure there is better stuff out there but I love the way these "relics" sound...not to metion the looks on my friends faces when they see where to sound is coming from

    Homer,
thats quite a collection. Do you have a list of titles? Some tapes are quite rare. If you care to share, you can join QPS and perhaps share a rare one with others while getting to obtain some rare items yourself.

    Hi,

have been around here for a bit already but havent introduced myself yet. I live in Freiburg Germany and the quad era was definitely before my time. but i am a big fan of surround sound, started with music dvds, discovered dts-cds including homemade quad-recodes from several, ahem, sources, then bought my first dvd-audios without owning a capable player back then (dts did the job) and now i own a cyberhome 635 which is a very respectable cheapo (less than 100 euro) combi-player - sacd, dvd-audio, hdcd plus the usual.

I enjoy reading on this board, its good to see so many dedicated music lovers and theres a lot to learn.

more in the forum, have to go back to listen to my freshly acquired WYWH 4.0 dvd-a,
    Regards,
    BS

Wink Re: New Members Only!! (Members who have never posted)

Hello everyone. If you don't mind I am going to ramble on a bit. Like Rcriss I am also from AK and live in AZ. I thought about lurking for a couple weeks but the browsing I have already done made it clear that this place is too interesting not to participate. What led me here was a search for info on a QS-500 I just picked up recently which led me to QuadBobs site which in turn pointed me in this direction. I have a couple of surround units that I basically just use as amps to drive single pairs of speakers. I am far more interested in the older equipment ie. earlier solid state gear.
Music has moved me for as long as I can remember. I remembe meeting Don Reno and Bill Harrell when I was 5 and I will never forget sitting there, watching and listening, how it gave me goosebumps and how it just seemed to flow from their fingers. I sang my first solo in the school choir when I was in the 3rd grade and still remember how nervous I was before, I am not sure I can put into words the way it felt when I was done.
Anyway, I have been a sponge for music of nearly every genre ever since. My first real system was anchored by a 9900Z that served me well for many years and may rise from the ashes yet so to assume that I like my music loud would be accurate. Some things never change. There I go digressing. Time out.
I was in the Navy from `78 to `81 and was trained to troubleshoot to component level on pcb's and then became an in-flight tech. Unfortunately, depending on your perspective, the USN and I didn't see eye to eye on lifestyles. Suffice to say, I will always be a hippie. When I got out,I had some pretty decent job offers based on my training but had NO desire to play "chutes and ladders" in the corporate world so I went to work as a bench tech for a vending company, repairing Ms Pacman, juke boxes, and such but found that to be boring to the point of insanity. Next stop was back to construction which was what I did before the military. I spent the next 20+ years bouncing from company to company looking for 1 that actually was interested in doing it right all the time.
About 5 years ago my body started telling me what the bonecrusher had been telling me for years. It was time to get out of the field. The wife and I started a short-term rentalservice for people that came from out of town to work under short term contracts and were doing OK until someone upthe corporate ladder of the management company we were leasing thru decided that the company should be doing that and basically pulled the rug out from under us to the tune of about $50k in lost inventory that we had to liquidate. We were in our 3rd year and just about to turn the corner but the immediate loss of $20k a month in operating funds pretty much blew us right out of the water.
However, things in life sometimes happen because the stars, destiny, blind luck, who knows why things have worked out for the best. Had that not happened, there would have been no way I could have taken over care of my mother in law. Her next stop was going to be a nursing home and with her Alzheimers and having been OCD all her life, they would have just medicated her into a "manageable state" which I find, unacceptable doesn't even begin to describe my views on that and I would rather not get booted from the forum on my first post so I will not expound in that area at this time.
This longwinded ramble of a nearly 50 hippie has led us to where we are today. I am home all the time and refuse to let myself grow stagnant soI started looking for constructive things to do that would exercise the mind and provide a challenge as well as a sense of a job well done on completion.
Since I have already been thru the training once to learn how to read schematics and logic diagrams, use test equipment and follow a logical test procedure, coupled with my lifelong love of music and audio equipment in general, learning about stereos was the next logical step.
I found an updated version of the courses I took in the Navy and am currently taking them over again to refresh my memory. I have been collecting up some pieces of gear to serve first as training aids and then as part of my home system. Most of what I have at the moment is working, at least powering up and sound of some sort comes out. Most of it is in need of a serious clean and maybe a recap. I figure that is the best way to familiarize myself with the equipment in general while I work on getting some test equipment and a bench set up. This is not about the money for me, it's about staying active, both mentally and physically sonot to worry. I am not here to drum up business or anything like that, in fact, once I get comfortable with what I am doing, I will be willing to look at anythng someone brings me and repair it if I am able for the cost of parts and the manual. I don't touch anything other than some basic checks without the manual.
I am slowly but surely putting the pieces together for my primary system of which the QS-500 the proper vintage and brand. The 9900Z is going to be my shop unit so I can drown out my neighbors when they get all drunk and "stuck on stupid". I do have my eye on another piece on E-Bay right now that will fit just right with the QS if I don't get outbid. Shipping on it is close to $100 but local for me so I am hoping that will make the difference. 3 days and I will know.
Oh yeah, Quads, lol, Bah never mind. I will post the question I have in the proper area.
Let me just say that I am excited to be here and am looking forward to getting to know some of you, gleaning some knowledge and hopefully down the road being able to pass some of that knowledge on to those who come after us.
Time to go post my questionfor the Quadmeister. Have a wonderful evening all and whatever you play, play it loud.

    Wow Cheon57! Welcome. That's quite a story!

You will find many of us here are "old quad hands" from the '70s. In addition, there are also many here who got into quad from being in the military and drooling over the Exchange catalogs that had huge audio sections in them.

Be it "classic surround" or modern surround, we welcome all who can hear past the two speaker barrier.

Hello a member on anther forums site pointed me into this direction, I’m no stranger to most home cinema forum sites, I must be joined to at least 20+!

So where do I begin, well I must say first of all, I do like the layout of the site very well thought-out very impressive and universal as well.

I first got into home cinema well I guess around 1989, but it started a little earlier in fact back to around 1982 when my dad brought a Hitachi monaural VCR, and one day I saw a very simple diagram in What Video magazine, which described how to connect a VCR to an amplifier, I thought well this looks simple and proceeded to wiring it up to the amplifier, WOW what an improvement it made in the quality.

When my dad saw what I did, he was a little mad at first, but he liked what I did.

Over the years leading up to the late 1989 I brought my first Yamaha DSR-70Pro Dolby Pro-Logic processor it was around the same time that I was working part time in a cinema as a projectionist for UCI cinemas UK. And the tips and techniques you lean in that field wow, I first learned theory past and present on how projectors work and different types of projecting lighting that is used from carbon arc, argon to xenon.

But I was so deep into sound and how it worked the magic of the Dolby Stereo process and the 70mm six-track mag format as well, Sensurround THX and so on.

Well quite a few years have passed, and though I like to work with ideas in practice as well as figuring out a few newer ideas to work with improving Dolby 5.1, like always say, it’s in the mix! So without farther to do, I’ll have look around the site and see if I can help in anyway or learn a few more techniques, has my former chief projectionist said, “in this industry you never stop learning”!
