I have found that Q-Sound recordings decode exceptionally well with an SQ decoder. For those unfamiliar with Q-Sound, it is a mastering process that is supposed to offer a more three-dimensional sound presentation in a conventional stereo system. I don't know about that, but they sure decode well in quad!

For more info on Q-Sound, check out this link:

Anyway, Q-Sound in audio mastering has been around since 1991. I tried to find a Q-Sound discography but came up empty handed. Through further searching, I was able to cobble together this list:

- Luther Vandross - Power of Love/Love Power
- Madonna - The Immaculate Collection
- Pink Floyd – Pulse
- Richard Wright – Broken China
- Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (soundtrack)
- Roger Waters – Amused To Death
- Sting - The Soul Cages

I was surprised by the lack of titles! Is this it? Are there any others that anyone here knows of?

My CD copy of Waters - Radio K-A-O-S, has no mention of Q sound. I don't think that the Q sound technology existed in 1987. But, you know the Floyd boys, they love to tinker with music. Maybe Waters re-released a new mix? Doubt it.

The first Q-Sound release was Madonna's "Immaculate Collection" in 1991. Like spenceo says, KAOS was released in 1987. I too doubt that Roger remastered the title later using Q-Sound.

K-A-O-S still sounds great through SQ decoder. "The Powers That Be", one of my fav. :smokin:

Okay, finally found a more thorough Q-Sound discography... on Q-Sound's website, of all places! Not sure why I didn't see this before... oh well.

P.S. Be careful if you decide to pick up some of the earlier titles. Some of them have been recently remastered without using Q-Sound technology!

Ooh! Is There Anybody Out There? - The Wall Live! That was even released on vinyl. I'll definitely have to listen to that.

I tried Waters' Amused to Death through the quad. Sounded awesome! What's the best way to hear these through a QRX-9001? I've been typically setting it to Synthesizer surround and 4 channel loop set on sonic maximixers. Sometimes I use SQ mode too.

Yeah, Amused To Death sounds great through a quad decoder. I like it best through my Tate in SQ mode. I thought The Wall - Live sounded best through my QSD-1 in surround mode. So, I guess the best thing to do is experiment and decide which decoder/settings sound best for you. Even with Q-Sound recordings, I find there is no single "best" method. It still depends on the recording in question.

Roger Waters - Radio KAOS is NOT Q-Sound
However, I thought that Pink Floyd-Final Cut is in Q-sound.
I know it was listed on a q-sound page a while back.
I thought it is listed in the liner notes of the original album and CD.
I know that Pink Floyd-Pulse IS in Q-Sound

Pink Floyd-Final Cut is in Holophonic

Q-Sound was founded in 1988. The Final Cut came out in 1983 and was recorded using 3D spatial technology but is not Q-Sound.

these are also QS sound I find them best with QSD 1
Abdula Paula .Spellbound (Q Sound) about half the tracks

Robin Hood Prince Of Theives Film Soundtrack (Q Sound

Waters Roger Amused To Death (Q Sound
Lennon Julian Help Yourself (QSound)

haven't heard about such format. thanks for revival of this topic from 5 years of oblivion.
i'm guessing, how much more info are buried somewhere in thousands of pages of this forum

Is Q-Sound akin to the technology used with Circle Surround and the manner that matrix-type quad would/could (at varying success rates) would synthesize a quad effect from a stereo source?

Since the beloved QRX-9001 gasped its last I have been quad-free within the shanty and for various reasons am unlikely to commence quadding again unless I happen across a unit locally at an unbeatable deal but high-atop the Ozark Plateau amidst a swarm of hillbilly road-kill loving inbred heathen who still likely view an AM radio as the epitome of audio Nirvana it is extremely doubtful that a quad unit even exists within any "over yonder 'cross the holler" distances.

Just curious, mainly.

Many early CD based video games used Q-Sound also for in game soundtracks.
I would say the majority of these were released for the Sega CD (Sega's CD expansion for the cartridge based Sega Genesis) although I have seen some for the Sony Playstation, NEC Turbografx, and I have also seen Q-Sound advertised on a few cartridges (although I'm not sure if that was done real-time in hardware or pre-processed samples preloaded on the cartridge).

A few games I have on hand that use Q-Sound:
Sonic CD (Sega CD)
Sonic Adventure (Sega Dreamcast)
Ecco the Dolphin (Sega CD)
Darkstalkers (Playstation)
Eternal Champions: Challenge From The Dark Side (Sega CD)
Jurassic Park (Sega CD)
Tempo (Sega 32X)
Buster Bros. Collection (Playstation)
...and many more!

The nice part about these games older games is that many of them have red book audio so that you can just pop it in a CD player and listen to the entire soundtrack. I haven't tried any through my quad receiver yet...

Several old Turbografx CD and SuperCD games used Q Sound as well, and a very few imports also used Roland Sound Space. I know Dracula X used Roland Sound Space, and it even had a diagram in the manual on how to set your speakers up so they they're exactly 30 degrees to either side of your head. I will have to dig that out of the closet and see what it sounds like on my quad system. (It's just regular redbook audio plus a digital track for the game itself, much like Sega CD)

Charles.

Another competing system to Roland’s and Q Sound was Stephen Desper’s Spatializer.

Here is a picture of it. http://web.archive.org/web/19980210...lizer.com/Products/Pro_Hardware/ProSpaz8.html

And here is a list of some of the projects his Spatializer was used on. http://web.archive.org/web/19980210171149/http://www.spatializer.com/Products/WhoUses.html

And here is Stephen explaining quadraphonic sound from sometime in the ‘70’s. http://vimeo.com/21000610

It was an interesting time, when the move from vinyl to CD’s allowed mix engineers to play around with wild phase effects that could not be easily cut to disk. The BBC rejected some of the program material as not being “mono compatible”.

How do Spatialized audio programs decode through various matrix decoders?

Desper is great. I wonder what he thinks about his mixes through a matrix decoder?
Thanks for the links! There was a good interview with him on The Flame website which seems to have gone missing. It had talk about mixing while monitoring in the Hafler speaker configuration.

They decode very well on the QSD1 or S/Master
on a Telarc sampler
there is a track called
USE ME
I forget who sings it
But you would think that it is Quad
all the types of enhanced Stereo
including BI Phonic give a bigger effect
