Nowadays, I suppose all the DVD players can decode Dolby Digital and DTS.

I am not aware of any less than $200 upscaling universal DVD player that decodes DTS. I can name several that don't including the recently released Oppo DV970HD, Samsung DVD950/941/841 and a couple of Toshiba models. If you don't want upscaling, most of the less than $200 standard DVD players, such as the Pioneer DV588A do. Most of the more expensive DVD players with SACD capability decode DTS as well.

The Oppo DV970HD decodes DTS. Very well indeed. I am listening to DTS via the 6 analog as I write this.

Interesting, I quit considering the DV970HD and early reports indicated it did not decode DTS and the Oppo website I visited shows under audio:

    Optimized Audio Features:

Optimized analog audio circuitry for great audio quality
Built-in Dolby Digital decoder with individual 5.1ch and down-mixed stereo outputs
Optical and coaxial digital audio outputs for Dolby Digital, DTS and Linear PCM
Unique "Audio Only" mode with video processing turned off for perfect acoustic fidelity
3D Surround (Virtual Surround): Concert, Live, Dance, Techno, Classic, Soft
Built-in equalizer, channel trim and channel delay functions

It only mentions Dolby Digital decoding and passing DTS through the digital output. The Oppo site today still list the DTS logo for digital out, not decoding. Look at the bottom of the specifications page.

    http://www.oppodigital.com/dv970hd/dv970hd.html

In any event, good to hear it does. I own the Samsung 841/941/950 players which don't. That makes the DV970HD the only less than $200 upscaling player I have seen confirmation does decode DTS. Oppo makes great players for the price and offers great customer service and you might send an email and see if you can get the information posted on their site.

I just checked and couldn't find any information online indicating the DV970HD does decode DTS. I guess you never know until you get something in your hand, but DTS has usually seen to it the companies licensing their technology use the proper logo. The correct logo should be DTS Digital Surround, not DTS Digital Out. Here is the DTS site that shows the appropriate logos to use:

    http://www.dts.com/consumer/technology/at-a-glance.php

I would send a message to Oppo but don't have first hand knowledge of the mistake which is prevalent all over the net and I also have seen a list of the DTS equipped players that I thought came from DTS directly showing the player to pass DTS but not decode it. I can't find that on the DTS site this morning. Oppo does correctly show the DV971H to decode DTS.

    Chris,
All I can say is that I was playing the Video side of some AIX discs and I was clearly selecting DTS and when I pushed the audio button on the remote while it was playing it was showing DTS a well. I was playing via the 6 analog outs at the time. Unless it is doing some conversion of DTS to something else (which is probably more complicated than actually decoding it) there was surround being output. I will check with their website and the dealer that I bought it from to see what is up.

That is the test I used for checking my Samsung DVD-HD950 for DTS decoding the first day I got it. Just selected DTS from the disc menu, and DTS settings under player setup. Listened to the analog output, silence, switched to the digital input on my receiver and the DTS logo lit up and it decoded the DTS audio. The Samsung player even has a message on the screen that analog audio is not supported when I select DTS. Since Oppo clearly indicates on their site the DV971H decodes DTS, I just assumed the DV970HD without such indication did not. I learn something new everyday, usually it is something I didn't understand about women and by the time I am 100, I will understand all I need to know about women. It looks like I can understand all I need to know about the DV970HD before I turn 55.

When it comes to women I know enough to know I don't know enough and know enough to know I will never know enough.

I have both formats. I for one was extremly dissapointed with sacd, as oppsed to dvd-a. WHY? Well, it's simple. If you as I have a REAL sacd player, that has DSD chip in it, (unlike the Oppo) that DOES NOT!, I found the sound to be very thin, missing, and shrill. I have heard parts of music that caused listener fatiuge, and it seems the only single item they do have is, titles! I also have a REAL dvd-a player with a REAL MLP chip. The diff. is day/nite.
Back to the Oppo, that I have, It does not contain either MLP/DSD chips. But will "play" either disc. I do notice sacd sounds better on the Oppo. ( This may be why they are so popular? I also have seen articals regarding sacd that I cannot grasp what is being said, and that freqs. are removed and replaced. Upon asking I get a "run around" answer. and am told if u like it and it sounds ok, then it must be good. So, this is my response and my opinion.

I am not sure I completely understand your point of view, but I agree the Oppo player sounds fine with SACD. The DSD>PCM>analog string of conversions can't be optimal, but I think the difference among the budget players that do pure DSD compared to this Oppo that doesn't, I am going to bet we would all be hard pressed to tell which is which.

Other factors must be more important. With a player using an expensive high quality DAC and pure DSD>analog or pure DSD over HDMI 1.2a, that is likely where avoiding DSD>PCM provides some audible improvement.

Well, my position is just the opposite. I mostly listen to classical music and love the SACD-DSD sound. DVD-Audio sounds clearly digital to me.

Those McIntosh monoblock power amps and speakers look impresive. I don't even want to know what they must cost. Just think if you got five sets for surround!

I was thinking the same thing. I haven't ever owned McIntosh and always just assumed it was mostly hype, although I don't doubt the company offers some fine audio equipment.
