Hello everyone. Here is my current collection of surround sound goodies (and here are some that I might also get), but I need some classical (and jazz - see other thread) to test out on my new system. I'm not familiar with many composers but I quite like Beethoven (Symphony 6?), a bit of Vivaldi, Greig and Tchaikovsky now and again, Orff, Gershwin, Holst, Stravinsky... I'm not really a Bach fan. I love a lot of modern classical like Steve Reich and Arvo Part, but I haven't seen anything like that in surround sound. The choice of classical titles is a bit bewildering. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Adam

Appended to most of my columns is a box, "Recordings in the Round," which has my current recommendation and the majority are classical.

Okay, I am probably off base here as you said surround, but if you want a very good cross section of classical material in 2 and 3 channel, just go out and buy all 40 of the Living Stereo SACD's. You can give the other 4 Opera sets a miss if you don't like opera but this is a very good way of building an overall exceptional classical library very quickly. It will give you a good view of classical music from 20,000 feet.

Let me start you out with two of my favorites: On the Audite Label the Saint-Saens Piano Concerto's, Vol I and II; and on the Channel Classics label the cellist Peter Wispelwey playing Tchaikovsky/Saint Saens/Bruch. The sound is great and the music compelling. You can find reviews and information on these by doing a search on the SA-CD net.

Vivaldi's La Stravaganza on Channel Classics (SACD) is a doozy. Still is the best recording of a violin I've heard so far. Rachel Podger's performance is also divinely executed. Truly something to behold and it's a great addition to anyone's music library, whether you're into "classical" or not.

EDIT: Just realized this was posted in the DVD-A section. Sorry! You can check my All-Spin Zone for other recommendations. I'll be updating it this weekend. Cheers!

The current Absolute Sound magazine features a new surround sound SACD of an Arvo Part piece.

I can highly reccomend the new, just-out London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) Beethoven Cycle (all nine symphanies plus a concerto and an overture) conducted by Bernard Haitink. Almost all the performances are equal to or better than the best (the 8th may be an exception)...and the sound is very natural sounding orchestral multichannel. I gave it to myself as a birthday present....CD Universe (www.cduniverse.com) seems to have the best price.

"The website dedicated to surround/multichannel music, QuadraphonicQuad, has, for years, had a running readers poll of their favorite multichannel music. If you take a look at it, you'll see that among almost 500 albums in Surround Sound they have rated, the top-rated SACD (and no. 12 all-time, regardless of format) is the Channel Classic "classic" La Stravaganza, violinist Rachel Podger's great performance. This site is not specifically classical oriented, which makes this rating even more special.

Wow, very nice! I feel like buying it again!

Felix! Nice to see you 'round these parts again. :phones

Ubertout, if you check the upcoming SACD multichannel listings over at HRAudio there's a 'healthy' plethora of great classical releases.

We do need more POP releases....just, hopefully, NOT the cringeworthy variety!

Nonsense. I should only get what I want :p

Honestly, my attitude with DV is just to see what they come out with and go from there. I'd love more classical but the five quads they did were magnificent and unexpected in equal measure. And there is of course plenty of classical being released on other labels...doesn't mean I don't want old Columbia/RCA quads though.

Since the folks at D~V do love classical, I'm sure we'll see more QUADS from the RCA/Columbia Masterworks catalogues in the near future. And I do agree, those D~V QUADS were unparalleled delights....and quite unexpected.

BTW, ubertrout, are you familiar with this exceptional [IMO] artist: http://hraudio.net/search.php?format=1&keywords=Hannes+minnaar

And there are many Multichannel DSD Downloads of Classical Music releases are upcoming as well.

In fact, Channel Classics just released a new one today over on NativeDSD.com

BTW, Brian, have you heard any of the brilliant Challenge Records multichannel recordings of Hannes Minnaar: http://hraudio.net/search.php?format=1&keywords=Hannes+minnaar

A talent to watch for, IMO! Illuminating.

One of these days I'll succumb and enter into the realm of DSD downloads.

In Brian's words: "You have NO idea what you missing."

Spoken like a true disciple.

I have indeed. I own a few of the Hannes Minnaar albums in Multichannel DSD.

Speaking of brilliant piano recordings, don't miss Ilya Itin's Debussy albums in Stereo DSD 256 from Wave Kinetics and the Sibelius Piano Trio albums in Stereo & Multichannel DSD 256 from Yarlung.
Highly recommended !
