Yeah, intesting tape though. Has a DJ type narration after each track with a short bit of info about the song or artist. I'm working on making a DVD-A transfer of it.

That's great Mark! I use the discography constantly, it's a truly fabulous resource.

I have been saving up more compilations and will post them when I get the chance to sort them out.

I recently found a variation of the Zenith LP from post #27:

...this one is Zenith 16302 F3041 (no "R"). It's more or less identical except the trailout vinyl does NOT have an "SQ" on side 1 -- track listing is the same, etc. The printing on the jacket is similar, without the wording on what to demonstrate with each side. While the F3041R jacket and label are printed in orange and brown, F3041 is printed in green and blue. Both reference 1974 Zenith models.

There may not be any practical difference, but I thought I'd point it out anyway.

    Arnold

Did you ever make that DVD-A transfer? I am a huge Floyd fan and have never heard of this Q8 release. Would be intersted in connecting with you re: Floyd and quad collections and possible trading.

Fantastic find for your growing collection.

London Phase 4 Stereo is just that: stereo. However the series is classified by many as an audiophile series in the same vein as Stereo Action, Living Presence, the 101 Strings on Miller Stereo-Fidelity and the various Enoch Light and related material on Command.

Master recordings in the early 60's for the most part were still made on only 3-track half-inch tape, which only served to isolate the center channel containing the lead from the backing tracks on the original master. The few people who had access to 4-track were limited to classical recordings with huge budgets.

As the 60's wore on and FM Stereo began to get popular, the Phase 4 Stereo catalog came along to fill the programming hours along with the other audiophile series' mentioned above. These people were using huge classical recording budgets to record (gasp) easy listening and light orchestral! Therefore, they were able to source the then-very-new and very-scarce 4-track mastering recorders. So, all the 4 in Phase 4 Stereo refers to is the fact that it was a very early non-classical use of the 4-track recorder. If you were to hear the master session tapes now, you'd hear percussion on one, strings on another, brass on a third and woodwinds on a fourth.

As such, even though the new style of scoring reflected call-and-answer along with point-and-counterpoint sections split up between the aforementioned sections to give a ping-pongy type of stereo, this would sound very strange as a ``quadraphionic'' presentation because the definition of ``quadraphonic'' the same as ``stereo'' there has to be some common information between the channels. As original session tapes for the most part are isolated elements, simply arranging these elements to play through four different speakers is no more ``quad'' than the Beatles twin-track recordings with the voices on one and the backing tracks on the other are ``stereo''.

If you look on the bottom rear on almost all Phase 4 release jackets, you're bound to see a very small date somewhere in the early-to-mid 60's. It's interesting to hear the dedicated-for-mono made-for-radio-only mixes on a number of releases as they are just as strong as the stereo mixes released to the public. However, like their Stereo Action, Mercury Living Presence and Command counterparts, Phase 4 Stereo releases are cut with an increased vertical modulation compared to conventional records of the day and pressed onto heavier-than-average vinyl.

For this reason, the increased vertical modulation combined with the left-wall-only and right-wall-only portions of the stereo signal will give an equally-increased feeling of depth compared to a normal album when these albums are played today through any sort of matrix surround system. And, yes, when matrix quadraphonic FM came out in the 70's, engineers had noticed the increased vertical modulation on these same albums, the same as that which would have been produced by the 4-channel matrix-encoding processes of the period.

So when these albums were played over the radio just as normal stereo, listeners were told by a prerecorded announcement that:

``The following is a matrix-encoded selection. Please activate your decoder.....Nowowowowowowowowowow,'' (where the announcer's voice gradually disappeared from the front and moved to the rear, followed by a series of clicks and ticks).

As the announcer's voice returned to front-center, the announcement continued with:

``If my voice gradually disappeared as I said `Now', and you heard no clicks and ticks, you are listening in Mono. Please switch your amplifier to.....Sterererererereoeoeoeoeoeoeoeoeoeo''. (where the announcer's voice gradually moved from the front-center to the sides, sounding as if his voice was double-tracked when it wasn't.)

As the announcement concluded, the announcer's voice moved to the rear once again and he said:

``If you hear my voice coming from the front speakers only and it has a diffuse and directionless quality, you are listening in .....Sterererererereoeoeoeoeoeoeoeoeoeo. Please activate your decoder.....Nowowowowowowowowowow. However if you hear my voice coming solidly out of the rear speakers of your matrix quadraphonic music system, you have correctly activated the matrix. Enjoy the following selection in Matrix Quadraphonic Stererererereoeoeoeoeoeoeoeoeoeo,'' (where the announcer's voice gradually came back to the center of the room in a holophonic style).

I'll have to find one I saved from the quadraphonic station I used to work at and transfer it to CD.

Those Ford Motor compilations on Q8 - these usually came with a Lincoln Continental. Some listed in Mark Anderson's quad discography are listed as double packages, but I believe these were split formats, the first tape being stereo and the second being quad, I've only ever found the second tape of the two in my quad searches, and the prefixes on these are always DAT2 instead of DAT1,as they're listed. Here then are what I have:

A Kaleidescope Of Contemporary Quadrasonic Sound (1975)
Fritz Reiner & The Chicago Symphony Orchestra – Also Sprach Zarathustra (intro)
The Hues Corporation – Rock The Boat
Eugene Ormandy & The Philadelphia Orchestra – Windmills Of Your Mind
Henry Mancini – A Man, A Horse And A Gun
Hugo Montenegro – Love Theme From The Godfather
Henry Mancini & Doc Severinsen – Theme For Doc
The Original Broadway Cast Recording – Hello Dolly
The Friends Of Distinction – Grazin' In The Grass
Arthur Fiedler & The Boston Pops – The Way We Were
The Main Ingredient – Summer Breeze
The Original Soundtrack – The Sound Of Music
    Perry Como – Temptation
Al Hirt – Stella By Starlight
    Elvis Presely – American Trilogy
    Q8 – Ford Motor Company DPT1-0140

A Kaleidescope Of Contemporary Quadrasonic Sound (1976)
Fritz Reiner & The Chicago Symphony Orchestra – Also Sprach Zarathustra
Hugo Montenegro – Lara's Theme From Doctor Zhivago
The Guess Who – Dancin' Fool
Henry Mancini & Doc Severinsen – Theme For Doc
Dottie West – Last Time I Saw Him
    Hugo Montenegro – Your Song
The Hues Corporation – Rockin' Soul
    Henry Mancini – Mr Lucky
Hugo Montenegro – Feel Like Makin' Love
The Pure Prairie League – Two Lane Highway
Henry Mancini & Doc Severinsen – Ben
The Friends Of Distinction – Love Or Let Me Be Lonely
    Henry Mancini – Love's Theme
