well it's just over 2 years since he gave any buyer any feedback on ebay.....and I think that's a lot easier to do than posting a prototype box

and what year did this thread start? 2007

    ahh 12 months is nothing...

OK, so what's going on here? Last I heard the prototype demodulator was being shipped to Jon. That was back in November of 2011. Was it shipped? Did it arrive? Has Jon evaluated it? Was there something wrong with it? And all there is on the thread is talk of coin op kiddie cars. It's almost April. What's up? At least my faithful 4DD5 is performing well, I am beginning to suspect I will continue to need it for the rest of my days.

I got the "final confirmation" PM from Theresa quite some time ago. I asked a few questions about payment and price at present time, I got no reply, so I asked on the pre-order thread, and got an answer, see
    http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/foru...ht=#post138487 post #283.
I just think I will wait and see what will happen.
In the mean time I guess the 4DD-5 will do. I also think that maybe i do not need a new decoder for the relatively few disks I have. Some of the interresting old disk are re-issued as "Immersion boxes" with 5.1 and old 4.0 mixes. I can buy a few of those if I really want to.
Further, with a good 4DD-5 and e.g. one of the E-MU external USB ADC/DACs I can make good enough (for rock'n'roll) DVD-As or FLAC files from the CD-4 LPs to playback on both 5.1 and 4.0 systems.
No doubt the digitized versions from the new Dorred demodulator will be better, and also the plain playback, but it is not here yet, so best to take a wait-and-see approach.

I still do not have the evaluation unit, but the last time Lou called, he told me that it was going to ship in a few weeks. Don't forget that this is something Lou is doing as a side project, and he has many real world things to deal with first.

Yes, JonUrban, we know, and we all appreciate the work Lou have done.
I am waiting. But it now seems that that "final confirmation" came a little premature?
I really hope Lou will have time to finish it, and that it will surface as a real demodulator sooner or later.

We still need to know, and I am hoping, that this new model will be significantly better than the vintage demodulators populating ebay. Its great to promise to do something, and everyone appreciates this is something of a side project, but as years go by and we're still waiting, it begins to look like a big tease, no matter how well intentioned this was. The economy has worsened, one member here has passed on while waiting for this new demodulater, and none of us are getting any younger. The pool of potential buyers for this project is shrinking. Who knows how long Grado will keep its deal open to manufacture shibata styluses for Lou?

Grado should be the supplier of the cartridges. The Shibata retipping should be done in Germany by one of the meanwhile rare specialists. I have arranged that as middle-man in December 2010! Retipped have been 2 of the Grados. Lou was very enthusiatic about the very well quality. I guess, that around 150 items of the demodulator are pre-orderd. Each Demodulator should have additional such a cartidge. Some would like some further cartridges extra. So it may have 200-250 cartridges for a retipping. My known specialist needs for 50 cartridges around 6 weeks - including mailing 8-10 weeks. That means for 150 cartridges a time for retipping 30 weeks, for 250 a year. I am further on prepared to help by this retipping deal. But I have not heard meanwhile something about that retipping activity. That is all, what I know about the situation of the demodulator or retipping of the Grados. May be, Lou will tell news and may be he has menwhile other surces for a retipping with the shibata stylus.

    Hello David,
the retipping man in Germany is Martin Göttmann. He has worked earlier in the firm Dreher & Kauf as specialist for retipping. After the firm has closed this activitie, his has taken over the machines and works now self for the retipping of all sorts of stylusses and plug ins. I think, this possibilities are actual very rare in the world. He works for analog fans and their cartridges and stylusses also outside Germany. So he has done the experiment retipping of the 2 Grados for Lou. But I think, he has not got the order from Lou for some more retippings, which would be needed for the items as supplement for each demodulator. By some askes in the past I have not heard from that. And it is embarassing for me, to ask further on.

So Lou has not yet placed the order for 150 retipped styluses, to equal the number of proposed new demodulators. I assume it is a question of money, this guy is not going to do that much work without being paid something up front. And Lou is not going to pay until he has filled 150 orders for demodulators which means he gets money from us first. Assuming lou finishes his prototype and delivers it to John, and John gives it a thumbs up for quality, Lou will first have to collect money from us and then pay for the manufacturing of the new demodulators. At the same time he will then have to place the orders for the retipped stylus (I assume grado gold cartridges will be procured separately). He will then have to wait for the stylus to be retipped and delivered to him for packaging with the new demodulators.
Based upon the above timelines cited by Dietrich, there could be quite a time lag between our paying Lou the money for these demodulators, and our receiving them, like about a year. Unless Lou is prepared to front all the manufacturing costs upfront himself, I don't see how these items could be readily available when we order them.
If Lou could give us delivery timeline estimates when he starts collecting money, it would be appreciated.

    Hello David an Jefel1

Of course it could be possible, that Lou has found meanwhile another possibility for the retipping as shown above. But the sticking point in the 5th year of developing is, that Jon would receive the protoype and could make finally the test. Only then the fans with an order would be prepared to make an advance payment. I think, this year will show, if the demodulator will see the light of the quadraphonic world or not. I am further on interested, but some other known fans have meanwhile some doubt.

Well since I already have a CD4-50 I use for transfers, I don't use my 4D-D5 no more - or the rest of the all-JVC quad rack it came in neither.

It ain't new in the box or anything but ArmyofQuad been bugging me forever to get in my garage and rescue my all-JVC vintage rack set with seperate amp, tuner, turntable, reel, 8-track player, this same demodulator and 4-speaker set - then he made me promise to tell the guys here about it first before I put it up on eBay to see if anybody wants it.

Well - now with the rain all week I pretty much don't have a choice but to go dragging around the garage if I want to keep from being bored.

I told AoQ that before I put this up for sale, I was waiting around til I could complete the set with a JVC 4-track quadraphonic cassette deck, and he basically googled his eyes at me like ``yeh-sure - you're gonna find one of THEM sometime soon'' like ``so put up what you got and let a guy who's gonna use it - buy it.''

At least he's not like my ex-foster-dad I live with and his incessant
HIM: (simpering) You ain't used it in a year. Why doncha throw it away.
ME: Well it's a good thing you ain't in charge of the Smithsonian or the National Archives HIM:The National Archives and the Smithsonian has a budget and funding.
ME: Paid for by taxpayers. Like you. I'm on disability. That's tax money. So it's the same.
HIM: If something ain't commercially viable, then it doesn't need to exist.
ME: Like you and everybody else on disability, PBS, Link TV the museum...
HIM: The museum is only the result of people cutting all the trees down and putting `em in a tree museum and then charging all the people 11.95 just to see em.

Which starts another ``pick a side'' argument about ``are you an environmentalist or a greedy corporate capitalist that uses up all the resources there is for profit and then complains there ain't no more (The Lorax).

    (LOL)
