I'm not voting yet, but so far it's a 10 for surround mix and a 10 for audio fidelity. This disc is a showcase for a surround mix. It's very impressive. The music is actually very good, and varies in style from track to track. I'm really getting into the first few tunes, they're getting repeat play in the car.

I am not that "Richard Thompson" aware, and at times I think I'm listening to a Gordon Lightfoot album, but the lyrics are quite powerful and have great depth. I think I'll end up liking it a lot, but even after a few listens, I can see why fans of this album are so passionate. Add to that the incredible surround mix, and well.......................we're getting close to another freaking "10" here.

PS - I can't tell you how many times I passed over this DVD-A in the past, leaving it in the rack while buying something that I ended up only playing once or twice. Now I ended up paying big bucks for it and not regretting it. Damn!

Richard Thompson's body of work is largely undiscovered treasure.

Go back and have a look at his solo appearance on the Sessions At West 54th Volume 1 DVD; he shows so much intensity & finesse as a writer, singer and especially as a guitar player.

For a good article on Thompson, salon.com did a piece on him in their Brilliant Careers series some years ago. The link is:

Yes, indeed. I saw him at the San Diego HoB a couple months ago. His stage presence is full of warmth and humor, and his guitar playing nothing short of phenomenal.

"Rumor and Sigh" is one of my favorite DVD-A discs for musical content, multichannel mix, and audio quality.

I'm an unrepentant RT fanboy from way back, so my judgment is colored; however, I think most hi-res surround hounds who give this one a listen for the first time will be more than pleased.

    It's a 10+ for me

Exactly! That's the same boat I'm in.

It's kind of amazing that this format was such a failure that most of the releases sold every copy that were made. Can't believe the record companies can't see to run off some more discs. Seems like pure profit to me since all the real cost was spent long ago.

I was one of the fortunate ones to pick this up when it was readily available. I never passed it over because I was already a RT fan. In that sense, I may be biased, but this gets a definite "10" from me. 52 Vincent doesn't have much going on in the surrounds but man what a great presentation of that song. I really hope those of you that want this one can find it without having to mortgage your house or anything.

Thanks for the heads up. I visited the website and found this disc and Sinatra at the Sands. I took a deep breath and ordered both. I'd been looking for a LONG time without luck so decided to just do it. Long time R.T. fan so am looking forward to opening a home brew and spinning it.

I first became aware of Richard Thompson when I got into Fairport Convention way back when. The music from Richard's solo career is at times similar to Fairport Convention, but by-and-large it is quite different from the band he originally founded. I still feel that Richard's best work was done with Fairport Convention, but that's more of a stylistic yearning on my own part than anything. The fact remains that Richard Thompson is a consummate songwriter and guitar player.

"Rumor And Sigh" is a technically excellent album that is also very strong from both a songwriting and production standpoint. The album was recorded in 1991 without surround-sound in mind. However, the rich production of the original album allows for a nice "retrofit" surround mix.

The surround mix is very tasteful and suits the songs very well. The technical strength of the album comes shining through with excellent hi-rez fidelity. Overall, this is an exceptional disc worthy of nine strong points.

This surround mix is phenomenal. I know the original CD by heart (it's one of my favorites) and this hi-rez mix just blew me away. Anyone that's a fan of this classic RT album and surround should try to grab this disc.

Anyone else wish he'd do Mock Tudor like this?

Ee gads, what an awesome mix. The quality of the album goes without saying. Top-notch.
A friend of mine sent me this album on CD while I was in Basic Training in the Army. I had gone with him to an RT show. I guess RT was a hard sell for some other friends, as our outing to see RT was a momentous event for my dear friend.
Of course, you can't listen to CDs in Basic Training... The drill sergeants punished the whole platoon by blasting the final track, "Psycho Street," on a boom box on full blast, in a locked room, for about three hours. Half the platoon hated me and the other half thought I was royalty before the torment of Psycho Street on loop was over...
I was given the CD when I graduated... It became a favorite album.
Around 8 years later I learned my friend had chosen to end his life by throwing himself off an overpass in to the windshield of an on-coming car. Nobody had any idea of the pain he was in...
Life is short and precious. I love each of you QQ members I interact with. Many blessings to you this year. In the hard times, keep your chin up. Or reach out to someone.
Life is sooo precious. Our every moment. Whether listening to a superb surround mix, taking a shit, fucking a lover or commuting to work.
Don't take a single moment for granted.

Snood finally got around to listening to this after having it for a few months lol

While Richard is not my favorite artist this is still a koo disc. Some tunes on here are just not 5.1 shiney tunes like "52 Vincent Black Lightning" and "God loves a Drunk" , but still sound fine while other tunes like "Mystery Wind" (AWESOME played it 3 times in a row) and " I Feel So Good" shine big time in 5.1, along with many others.

The 5.1 mix probably an 8 to 9 on the best tunes............altho Mystery Wind alone was a 10 to me

The content. Loved the Lyric screens, not my fave artist but still some koo awesome tunes.........maybe an acquired taste to some. The voice does take some getting used to............but Snood gonna base this on the 5.1 mix alone.

8.5 for surround, certainly its not mind blowing other worldly surround like say Pink Floyd, Roxy or Bryan Ferry's Boys & Girls - but for what it is - it works and is very well done.

If was gonna take my taste in music included...........7.5 for the tunes and a 9 for the mix............but Snood no vote that way. Just because an artists tunes might not be my cup o tea - this is all about the 5.1 for Snood.

Mix gets an 8.5 rounded up to 9

So a 9er it is......... based on the 5.1

Do have one question........on the Discography page of the Disc.........it shows one by one a truncated discography and plays a short cut from one song on each......from Amnesia to Mock Tudor, while on Mirror Blue the song is in Stereo, I could have sworn the other cuts from the other albums were in 5.1, albeit very short snippets - pretty sure they were.

Anybody notice this or have more word on whether they had planned on releasing more of his stuff in 5.1?

Also loved the upcoming releases with Dreamboat Annie and one more that never saw the light of day grrrrrrrrrrrr
