AUDIOPHILE AUDITION for May 2003

The May AUDIOPHILEAUDITION.COM boasts 100 SACD, DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and CD reviews. The web magazine of audio, music and home theater covers classical, jazz and rock, along with music videos and feature films. The three components reviewed this month are the new Onkyo DV-SP800 Universal Disc Player, the Grace Design Model 901 Headphone Amp, and TerkÕs Wavemaster Wireless AV System. Special Features are an essay on why classical recordings are sounding better lately, and a list of the 25 recordings placed in the Classical Hall of Fame.

AUDIOPHILE AUDITION has been putting the lie to the contention that there is not enough catalog available in the new formats. For May 30 new hi-res discs are reviewed and most are multichannel: The Persuasions Sing the Beatles, Richard ThompsonÕs Rumor and Sigh, Charlie MusselwhiteÕs Up and Down the Highway, 4 Generations of Miles, Billie HolidayÕs Lady in Satin, Ana CaramÕs Rio After Dark, the original cast album of A Chorus Line and Bob James in Hi-Fi are among the pop titles. The multichannel disc of the month is a reissue from the quad era of E. Power Biggs playing the four great Toccatas and Fugues of Bach on four antiphonal organs - simultaneously in one cathedral. There is a multichannel Mahler Fifth from Amsterdam, two Shostakovich piano concertos conducted by Mackerras, and KarajanÕs classic Beethoven Ninth. Jazz CDs include new releases from Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Terje Rypdal, the Yellowjackets, and three exciting female singers. Eight music video DVDs are reviewed, including five ballets, Norah Jones and The Everly Brothers.
