Tom Petty's forthcoming album "Wildflowers - All The Rest", which is composed of tracks written and recorded by Petty between 1992 and 1994, will complete the original Wildflowers album, which was initially intended by Petty and producer Rick Rubin to be a double CD.

"Somewhere Under Heaven" is now available to stream and purchase at all digital retailers and can be heard during the end-credits of the Warner Bros Pictures movie Entourage, to be released June 3rd.

Written by Tom and Mike Campbell and recorded in 1992, but forgotten in Petty's archives until this year, "Somewhere Under Heaven" is a lost gem from one of the most profilic periods of Petty's career, during which he wrote and recorded the album that became 1994's Wildflowers.

(Note: This is NOT a confirmation this release will be in surround, and it's NOT a reissue of "Wildflowers", but given that Tom Petty's latest albums were released on Blu-Ray with surround, I say 'Hope Springs Eternal!') :)

Maybe there will be a full-blown reissue (with surround) of "Wildflowers" later in the year.

After all, Pink Floyd reissued "The Division Bell" followed by "The Endless River" (music also from that same period) with both mixed in surround, so maybe "Wildflowers - All the Rest" will be followed by a reissue of "Wildflowers" later in the year.

Either way, I'm looking forward to hearing what this 'new' album sounds like. This first song is very good IMO! :)

From 2001 when I started getting surround SACDs & DVDAs, and naively didn't buy all I saw :violin

Same here.. I literally only got the music I was into back in the day.. I'm still playing catch up now with all those OOP beauties.. my how surround has broadened the old musical horizons..!!! :p

I'll have to listen to Wildflowers and It's Good To Be King again to refresh my memory...both from the Wildflowers original album... and in surround on the anthology disc...I sure hope a surround disc emerges from this new Petty project...Petty has done very well in his previous surround ventures...

Snap!

I've also found that surround has broadened my musical taste further (Depeche Mode is a good example of something I wouldn't have listened to before!). I've found surround lets you hear all the nuances in the production, plus I think I listen more intently to the music as well. There are not many albums where I prefer the stereo to the 4.0/5.1. :51banana:

there's a surround anthology disc?

there's a surround anthology disc?

I think it must be,

I bought the big Live Anthology set for pretty cheap (like maybe 50-60 bucks) a year and a half ago. I guess there were several copies that had punctures or dents in the boxes that Best Buy probably concluded were not fit to be sold in their stores, and the box I got was practically 100% except for some small damage on a corner somewhere.

Remember this?
It may still happen, although now it would be part of an expanded, deluxe edition of "Wildflowers" possibly coinciding with a full "Wildflowers" tour!

Tom Petty will be on the road with Mudcrutch until June 30th, but he's already thinking about his plans for 2017. While the singer has yet to confirm any shows, he hopes to finally release an expanded edition of his 1995 LP solo Wildflowers and then potentially play all of it on the road. "I want to take the Heartbreakers and whoever else I need to reproduce every sound in a big way," he tells Rolling Stone. "That album was really about sound in a big way. I would like to go out there and perform the entire album as it was originally conceived with all of the songs."

Wildflowers was initially envisioned as a double album, but was ultimately pared down to 15 songs on a single CD. It became one of the most successful records of his career, with singles "You Don't Know How It Feels," "You Wreck Me" and "It's Good To Be King" all getting extensive radio play. For years, Petty has been contemplating assembling the unreleased material into a deluxe package.

"I think I put four of the [Wildflowers outtakes] on the She's The One soundtrack just to fill out the album," says Tom Petty. "But they were very hastily mixed. Take 'Climb That Hill.' There's a version of that on She's The One, but the Wildflowers one I think is extremely better. I'm gonna put that out. 'Hung Up And Overdue' is another one we remixed and it turned into an epic. I had Carl Wilson [of the Beach Boys] and [Heartbreakers bassist] Howie Epstein singing quite a bit of harmony that didn't come through on the original. Then again, there's probably six songs that nobody has heard. There's 11 or 12 [new] songs on the album. I think people are going to like it a lot. I like it a lot."

As of now, Petty isn't sure exactly how the new version of Wildflowers will be released. "At one point the label really just wanted to put it out as a standalone album," he says. "And then there's the point of view where they want to put both records together. There's also the point of view that wants the box set with the demos and all that. I don't see that as much fun, but other people do."

Whatever happens, he definitely hopes to take it on the road, even though last year he told Rolling Stone he had no interest in complete album shows. "I've changed my mind because nobody has ever done something like this where you're previewing the second part of a never-released album," he says. "How often does that happen? It's old and new at the same time."

Petty saw the Rolling Stones play Sticky Fingers at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles last year, and noticed they played it completely out of sequence. "Single album concerts often don't scan right for a concert," he says. "But with the amount of material I have for the Wildflowers double album, I think I've got enough tempos and types of songs that I could do a live show … And it'll be fun for the audience since there's a bunch of songs they'll know."

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have been off the road since the Hypnotic Eye tour ended in October 2014. They tend to play around 20 songs at their shows, which wouldn't leave a lot of room for non-Wildflowers tunes if they wind up playing the complete double LP. Petty says he hasn't given that issue any thought yet. "I haven't gone to rehearsals yet," he says with a laugh. "I probably haven't even told the band about this yet, but they can read about it in Rolling Stone."

We'll see if surround sound is a part of any of this like it was for the reissue of "Damn the Torpedoes" and the last two albums that Petty and the Heartbreakers put out. :)

This is still being talked about and it's still in the works.
I'm sure it will be out next year.

A Wildflowers box set is also in the works, something that Petty frequently spoke of in his final years. The 1994 album was originally envisioned as a two-disc set, meaning many songs got cut for space when it was truncated. “I think I put four of the [Wildflowers outtakes] on the She’s the One soundtrack just to fill out the album,” Petty told Rolling Stone in 2017. “But they were very hastily mixed. Take ‘Climb That Hill.’ There’s a version of that on She’s the One, but the Wildflowers one I think is extremely better. I’m gonna put that out. ‘Hung Up And Overdue’ is another one we remixed and it turned into an epic. I had Carl Wilson [of the Beach Boys] and [Heartbreakers bassist] Howie Epstein singing quite a bit of harmony that didn’t come through on the original. Then again, there’s probably six songs that nobody has heard. There’s 11 or 12 [new] songs on the album. I think people are going to like it a lot. I like it a lot.”

Now that he’s gone, his former collaborators are determined to see the projection to fruition. “I see that in the cards,” says producer Ryan Ulyate. “It’s going to be fantastic.” There’s also talk of deluxe editions of key albums from Petty’s catalog. “If there’s a market for something like that,” says Campbell, “we’ll do it.”

:)

Ryan, thanks for posting this Tom Petty article. The Wildflowers album sounds like it would be a great remix with the extra songs and like the description of the song recorded with Carl Wilson and Howie Epstein doing extra harmonies, yummy for the ears........

I would get Wildflowers and Full Moon Fever in 5.1

A “Wildflowers” box set is still in the works, and they are trying to finish it for release next year. No idea if it will contain surround sound or not.

A “Full Moon Fever” 30th anniversary box set is another good release idea for next year, but both of these albums are on different labels, so who knows what will happen...
