Michael Dutton doesn’t mix these. They are old quad mixes.

The Sonata is added as a “bonus work” in stereo only. Presumably because it was never mixed to quad back in the day.

A sonata in quad might not be much to hear anyway. :)
Michael Dutton has made new quad mixes for a number of vintage recordings, such as the Lt. Kije that accompanied Alexander Nevsky. And of course he also does quad mixes for all of his new classical recordings.

And yeah, I'll admit a solo piano only needs so many channels. But there is benefit to ambient quad - give more of the hall sound and the "you are there" feeling. And stereo famously doesn't serve the piano well - the famous "20 foot wide piano" problem. Additional channels are a way to mitigate that.

Let's just look at the tune "No Time". This is a great tune to use as an example...

That tune, No Time, is arguably one of my all-time favorites. I played the 45 endlessly as a kid and still never tire of hearing it. After I announced my retirement, I played it every day for weeks on end. On my last day, I played it ten times straight on the commute to the office. It's got that hard sounding verse which goes into the tutti fruity middle eight and finally into Cummings hard driving rant to end the song.

I'll take No Time in stereo, quad, quad with the channels reversed, upside down or whatever.

No Time is as close to a perfect pop/rock as I’ve heard.
Their music is timeless (no pun intended) and No Time is the best example IMHO

My mistake. I knew he did quad mixes of new recordings, but I didn’t know he created new mixes from old recordings. Has he done many of these?

As far as multichannel making a piano sound better? Could be. But this piece most likely was only recorded to stereo anyway. Dutton probably couldn’t have made a quad mix of it even if he wanted to.

In any case, your wording was confusing. It made it sound as if there IS a Dutton mix of this somewhere that was left off.

This is almost my story as well. My older sister had this 45 and when I “inherited” it after it was no longer a current hit she was interested in, I loved it and played endlessly. The perfect mix between 60s pop and 70s harder rock. One of my favorite singles ever.

No idea if there's a mix, but assume there isn't - sorry the wording was confusing. I'd imagine they probably used more than two channels on the tape recording the sonata, but who knows?

A couple of new mixes. There's no concordance to my knowledge, but discs with a new Michael Dutton quad mix include:

Thanks for that list!

On an Oppo at least mine stop the disc hit the audio button on the remote and you will see a pop up menu. Choose SACD stereo and then you can see play the stereo tracks. This wont change the default setting of SACD surround if you set it up that way.
On the Oppo players I own you don't have to stop the SACD in order to change from stereo to multi-channel and vice versa. Just press the audio button when the SACD is playing and after a brief pause it'll change to the audio version desired.

Not sure if this has been mentioned in any of the D/V threads but Grooves Inc has a number of D/V SACD titles available. The prices are very good and there is free shipping with orders over $22. A member over at the Steve Hoffman forum posted that information in the link below. I ordered three D/V SACDs tonight for a total of $40.50 shipped. I've ordered from Grooves Inc in the past and haven't had any issues.

Wow, markdowns on Tomita Firebird, Angel Clare & Pure Prairie League ( 2-fer ) quads.

Finally got around to ripping this and trying out the channel swaps... wow, "Talisman" sounds so cool at the end with the 2 guitars following each other around the room! "American Woman" has a bit more "punch" to it, as well... Thanks for the detective work, Q-Eight :)
This is a great sounding disc... 9.
I might give this a try when I get around to ripping the disc. The disc is still fantastic as is, but if it can be improved GREAT!

...I know from the earlier posts that the sound quality of this release is a bit better than that of the Audio Fidelity Best Of The Guess Who SACD...possibly because "best of" albums can be a tape generation down on the food chain...

Depends on your audio system.
I find the sound quality on the Audio Fidelity SACD better on the system here.

Interesting things transpiring indeed. During the last listening session, I found the AF SACD sound quality more pleasing to my ears than that of the DV American Woman SACD. I guess my ears are just fickle...or more likely the ears are fooled/conditioned by whatever one was listening to previously. I.e redbook CD's can sound pretty good if one listens to them before going to hi-res...but they can sound not so good if one reverses the sequence.

Reminds me of the discussions I had with Chucky ar, about psychoacoustics and how your brain adjusts to different sounds at different times. Think of all the auditory information our brains must deal with, different frequencies, volumes, directions, phasing etc. I do believe there is something to this. I even believe our mood during listening can play a roll in how we hear things; even exterior extraneous noises and visuals.
So how do we even get a handle on what we would call a base-line listening session?

It all boils down to our auditory memory is shorter than we think. So kick back, crack a cold one and just enjoy!
Yeah I forgot to mention possible "adult substance enhancements!"
