I voted 9, but I found it difficult to decide between a 6/7 or 8/9 on this one.
I love the album, and I think it's their best output from the H era. Brave is also good, but it doesn't flow well from beginning to end like AoS does. Many times, I make a purchase and then listen once or twice to the album. Well, not in this case! I can't even remember how many times I have been playing AoS and the associated live album. There are some great performances, such as Hard as Love and Hotel Hobbies. This was money well spent for me.
Regarding the surround mix, I don't think this is the sort of approach to multichannel music that I like, or at least, it's not what I was expecting. It's an immersive experience, similar to Guthrie's approach to Dark Side - wide stereo with some discrete moments, primarily sound effects. I have to admit it's a very effective approach for AoS, and it sounds so much fuller than the stereo mix. It is a great experience and the best way to listen to the album. I can also confirm that there are many discrete moments, but overall it sounds a bit 'static'. I probably had higher expectations, and I can't say this is a demo disc one would play to persuade a friend about the magic of surround music. It's a good mix, that's all.
The stereo remix is also very good, and I find it better than the original despite some minor changes and issues. For example, there are some artefacts at the beginning of Gazpacho, at the 0:30 mark, which are not present on the original mix. It must have been the collage of source tapes used for putting together this remix.
Again in Gazpacho, I think there's a missing guitar in the right channel, at the 3:30 min mark.
In Out of This World, vocals at 1:15 are slightly shifted, they are not in sync with the original mix. I think this was a good fix.
Same song, missing seagull sound at 0:30. Not a major omission. The intro sounds much fuller.
In King, I find the cleaner vocals work much better in the remix. The drums also sound better in the remix, in my opinion.
I ended up voting 9, even though I think the surround mix deserves something between 6 and 7, in terms of creativity. In terms of enjoyment, this is a must-own box set, a clear 10+, and my only regret is that I waited until 2021 to buy it! One of the best purchases of the year. Recommended.
