Not in terms of electronics, but strictly in terms of ears: If I play an SQ or QS record through an EV decoder, will I get any kind of quad decoding at all (even though it wouldn't be what the quad engineer intended)?

Yes, sort of. Back in the early days that's exactly what people did, in fact electronics magazines even published charts showing what you get in terms of channel placement and separation if you play one systems record through another's decoder. I always liked the effect, others would be much less impressed. I had an early Audionics SQ decoder that I played everything through. Don't expect a lot more than you get from a simple Dyna speaker hookup though. Don't expect discrete sounding Quad. QS and EV should sound about the same through the EV-4 decoder, SQ would not work as well. The EV-44 decoder should be better on SQ, but I'v heard that it wasn't all that good either.
