Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a 4 Disc Clamshell re-mastered boxed set of the album "Seventh Heaven" by Genesis founder member ANTHONY PHILLIPS and ANDREW SKEET. Originally issued as a double CD set in 2012, "Seventh Heaven" was a primarily orchestral work featuring the City of Prague Orchestra and was recorded in various locations in London and Prague.A gorgeous and evocative collection of compositions, the album was hailed by Classic FM radio and is one of Anthony's enduring works. This new edition of "Seventh Heaven" features the original album newly re-mastered, along with a bonus CD featuring ten previously unreleased recordings, among which is a rare 1973 recording of the hymn 'Take This Heart' (written by Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford for the album "Songs for a Modern Church"), recorded at Charterhouse School and featuring the Charterhouse Choral Society. Also included is a DVD featuring a new 5.1 Surround Sound mix of "Seventh Heaven". This clamshell boxed set features an illustrated booklet with a new essay by Anthony Phillips archivist Jon Dann.

I got it today. On first listen I like the music (orchestral, sometimes chorale, some guitars here and there and often cinematic) but the mix is average of the kind that keeps you standing up and listening to the surround speakers to check if it's not double stereo.
A missed chance, as the music lends itself quite well to surround. I don't regret having bought it, but no an essential release, at least for the 5.1 mix

I’m wondering if anyone who has heard this could comment on the surround mix. I’ve been in quite an Ant Phillips phase lately and I’m curious about this one. Classical is not my usual cup of tea, but I’ve found that 5.1 orchestration, done well, can be really enjoyable to listen to.

I did ...playing it now.

As I've had the kick up me arse.

It is a totally exquisite album , beautifully played and recorded.

The mix will not excite you but, in this case, the music more than compensates for that.

If you like relaxing music, then you would be hard pushed to beat this release.

BOOM

Unfortunately, No Poll

Thanks for the response! I've listened to the album a bit through streaming services, and I've liked what I've heard (except for the operatic vocal songs, which are not my style). I wish your reaction to the 5.1 mix was more encouraging, though. Are we talking mostly reverb/ambience in the rear speakers, or are there some discrete elements? I'm hoping to be enveloped in sweeping strings and such, but I fear that might not be the case...

There is reverb and echo, there is also occasional separation in the rears.
'To be enveloped in sweeping strings'...I'm afraid you will not get that stand out mix you are seeking, on this release.
And I'm the first one, usually, to shout from the roof tops, about duff mixes.
The mix provided, fully compliments the fantastic music...imo.
If this is your style of music, then go for it I say.

I've just up-mixed the stereo CD's for Seventh Heaven.
That's more like it!!

Again , why oh why can't James Collins get the mix to sound like this, in surround
Mine isn't perfect in any means but gives a wider appreciation of what could have been done.

Yes really nice album, but mainly reverb in the rear, I'd forgotten I'd got it!
