I've been living with 45-46 inchers for years, at some point Imma gonna want to get a bigger boat!

Which brings me to another thought ... 4K content is just coming around, but 8K is years off perhaps; would an 8K TV up-convert a standard 1920x1080 image in any noticeable way, like better contrast etc?
I don't think so, when I watch non-HD (so not 1920x1080) on the Sony it looks pixelated, and it has good image processing - what I can't find out is whether it upscales as there is nothing in the (very poor) manual about it

I was under the impression, Dunc, that it's the player that upscales both DVDs and 1080p to 4K ...... and not the TV......but of course with technology rapidly expanding, I could be wrong!

Non-HD would be regular 720x480 DVD. If your watching a 16:9 aspect ratio DVD and it fills the 1920x1080 screen, then yes, it is being upscaled.

I have a Panny projector with an 8' screen. The projector has a 2nd 16:9 option that the best I can say on the menu looks like $16:9. When thats selected a DVD is displayed at native 720x480, which fills about 2/3rds of the screen. So no upscaling there. I mainly use it just for the occasional Laserdisc that indeed does not upscale very nicely. Except for earliest DVD's sourced from composite video originals SD DVD upscales excellent almost zero artifacts.

Gotta agree with you about no need to wait on 8K. Partly because early gen 8K probably wont be as good as mature gen 4K. And as someone who worked 25yrs for a retina specialist, I'm here to tell ya our eyes don't get better as we get older.

I was wrong about the upscaling process as this article will elaborate:

https://www.cnet.com/news/why-your-4k-tv-is-probably-the-only-upconverter-you-need/
Pulled this handy little site off that article also-

I'm also wondering if some of these Content providers (Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.) have various types and amounts of compression on their content in order to save space and mitigate streaming bandwidth slowdowns?

The data rate (compression level) of video has way more impact on picture quality than resolution. High bandwidth HD will always look better than low bandwidth 4K - if you see pixellation, blockiness or any other artifacting in a 4K stream, it represents a loss of resolution that can't be fixed, repaired or upscaled by any kind of technology.

I wish I could afford an OLED TV, but between the cost of the TV in Canada, an extended warranty (because they're notorious for burn-in) an ISF calibration, and tax, it's about 3x what I could possibly afford for something that I'd want to use for 5-10 years, especially with some newer/better display technologies on the horizon.

Misgivings about the Chinese government aside (and I have plenty) I may be in the minority here, but personally I see various products being manufactured in various countries worldwide as a boon for both peace and democracy. Look no further than post-WW2 europe - when the Allies planned the reconstruction of Europe, they did so with an eye toward making all of the various countries inter-dependent rather than self-sufficient. I don't think it's any accident that Western Europe has seen 65 years of peace now, after literally hundreds of years of regular conflict preceding it.

I have a 2016 LG OLED, and concerns about burn-in are vastly overstated. Just don't use it as a PC Monitor and you'll be fine. My girlfriend plays a lot of Animal Crossing on it but it hasn't been an issue.

Rumors of burn in on OLED TVs has been GREATLY EXAGGERATED. And the picture and 3D on my 2016 LG OLED TV is still STUNNING!

All the Human Rights stuff, while not irrelevant, is well off of center to my concerns about my future options. In the end, the only thing that the Asians (whichever provincial subset you want to hold up or vilify as a good example/bad example of Capitalism) have done is turn our own "we's the best, and we can't shut up about it" hubris, scaled it up to their production capabilities (a function of their population, btw) and applied manufacturing discipline. All they've done is throw it back at us and without (unlike the Captain Chaos Chronicles game plan) feeling it necessary to smirk and exclaim: "How you like 'er now?". This, as we have done for the better part of the last century, including through our popular Entertainment culture. Further, our stats on the "milk of Human kindness" co-efficient haven't really been what might be hoped for either recently, so I set those things aside and concentrate on the WIDGET IN QUESTION. The common wisdom I seem to see out in the "Internet Wilds" addresses questions about the degree to which OLED and QLED's pricing might deflate and how soon it might happen.

The real question is when will micro-LED begin exerting (I think there's one micro-LED here already, but it's not from a "bleeding edge" manufacturer, I'll need to double-check on that) downward pressure on the existing stock/marketing/pricing infrastructure. What I THINK I want is a 77" LG CX and as long as the price is significantly lower than what I'm seeing now, I might jump on it. Do I expect that to happen? Probably not. Maybe next February. It's what happened with a Q90R that I very nearly pulled the trigger on and now I'm glad I didn't. I keep Televisions for a VERY long time. The processing on my 65" 1080p 2011 XBR is really amazing and can (depending on the source) look about the same (or occasionally better) as some 4K's I see in stores IF I can pipe wrench the source material off of 4K. That's becoming harder to accomplish than in times past. (But if you can, it's the only sure-fire way to get somebody to come out of a break room and offer to help you.) I think right now I'm going to stand pat until I see CX quality OLED's at a price that won't make me wretch or until I can see where pricing on micro-LED technology shakes out in the marketplace.

I say this all the time on Music broadcast/streaming source component groups: Until there's more content that appeals to my interests (IPTV is a pretty brutal wake-up call in terms of the same very narrowly focused/schmoozed/cloned repeatedly for literally thousands of entries), I'm having a tough time justifying the asks-even as they seemingly deflate. Content (of EVERY kind, not JUST Rock 'n Roll) drove the last Hi-Fi golden age of the mid-to-late '70s. I just watched a LOC interview (on YT, which is where 90% of what I see that I really value resides these days-but there are upload quality issues depending on the source) with Rod Serling. I thought it did a pretty good job of predicting how letting the free-market (or lowest common denominator of interest) decide everything about what gets slated for programming would eventually dilute most of Television's potential. From our point in time, Gilligan's Island (vilified in its day) can seem like (literally) "Carmen" by comparison. Edward R. Murrow forecast the same dangers for what originally was supposed to be an FCC charter licensing requirement, but has since become a profit center for mega conglomerates: Television News. I know there's no putting those genies back in their respective bottles. But we might, as a Nation, consider how to better contain the excesses that unhinged expenditure of Corporate money providing oceans of low-cost/high-profit "fake-reality-mung" has produced. (Public broadcasting seems to be falling victim to this as well, so it's not the safe haven it once was.) Serling argued for providing a judicious amount of space for programming that's a little more challenging in terms of content "Vitamins & Minerals". (My quotes, not Serling's.) I don't see it as being entirely ideologically polarized. As YT commentators like "The Critical Drinker", (the now dormant) "Counter Arguments", "Overlord DVD" have pointed out, two equally alienating extremes doth not (IMO, at least) progress make.

One last thing: For whatever reason, my Android mobile platform doesn't always (some sites "yes", others, "no") let me parse my posts into paragraphs. When I post from my main rig, I'll follow (to the best of my ability-everybody's Human and those rules have changed during the course of my lifetime, as has the actual SPELLING of some words) "Ye Olde Harbrace College Handbook". But if my mobile devices (or the servers of the recipients) compress it back to one long paragraph, I ask that the reader deal with it. Content over form is what matters MOST. But I'm not arguing that "form" is irrelevant. As a retired professional Musician/Educator, I know that it is. I've had cascading Android updates recently, but none of them have seemed to have completely addressed this particular issue on my particular device. It's not a brand new device, because I budget "new phone" money for Audio gear-including updating multi-channel. *off-soap-box*. TIA.

When I'm ready to pull the trigger on a new T.V., I'll definitely be looking hard at a Sony set, as from what I understand, they use LG's screens but their own superior processing. Another thing I'll be looking at is the usability of the Web apps offered up. Seems the longer one holds out, the better (more advanced) and cheaper they get; that has to be weighed with the current value of missing out.

As to what we make here in the U.S.A. (and outside of any Asian region country) I've always thought, it's more about us than them. I propose it's a combination of market forces driven by cheaper labor costs and National, State & Local environmental laws and regulations.

It's complex and in many ways, needlessly so, for sure. In my view, many of the "domestic" hats are pretty uniformly "grayscale". There's no shortage of backbone or brainpower to be competitive. The question is one of willingness to work together towards a common goal and not get mired down in whether or not "E Pluribus Unum" is a Qanon conspiracy theory or not...just my two cents. I'll not encourage going any farther down that particular Rabbit Hole, now most especially. Everyone's mileage varies. Einstein couldn't see how his assertion of there being "no privileged reference point in the Universe" would upscale to relevance for us, the mundanely complex organic, with the emergence of widespread interconnectivity. IMO, the good has far outweighed the bad, but the bad's potential for chaotic instability may be rounding the loop of an upward J-curve. I hope not...but as the Chinese curse references..."...we live in interesting times". Coda: If I posted this before, I apologize, but as this group has at least a partial focus on Film presentation, I'm going to front-load bias it with my approval. Not all of this guy's posts are to my liking, he's sometimes a little "coarse", but this is one of his best posts. (The "Go away now" thing is a tagline, btw...)

Yes, the PAST MATTERS. Man without Man's Past is MEANINGLESS! POLITICAL CORRECTNESS: THE VERY BANE OF MY EXISTENCE. Anyone with a keyboard or nimble fingers NOW has a Platform and coupled with FREEDOM of SPEECH can choose to create havoc or spread joy and TRUTH, which itself is now in VERY short supply.

Wake UP EVERBODY! You wanted cheap products. The US of A couldn't provide them any more at your price point so we went to first Japan, then China and Viet Nam to manufacture at the 'nice price' what they could no longer produce in our Republic.

So who you gonna blame?

And now they want to EDIT the past. Remove any vestige of discomfort from motion pictures, sound recordings, TV shows which in a former time were acceptable but are now verboten! Is it moral cleansing .... or censorship? So better stock up on all those racially insensitive, discomforting relics before they evaporate forever to appease the MORAL MINORITY who have deemed them unacceptable!

And what IS the endgame.....LOSS of freedom of speech and expression .... and boring artlessness for boring people whose narrow minds and sometimes baseless morality can literally fit on the heads of PINS!

And yet in these truly dire times, a sense of humor and that freedom of expression is just what the doctor ordered ....... that's IF those 72M Americans who voted RED would just follow the doctor's orders and NOT the drivel pouring out of 1600 Pennsylvania and restore the Republic to its once exalted state.

And LEAVE those past celluloid treasures ALONE. And take them for what they were ...... OF THEIR TIME! You cannot change nor eradicate the past but you can through an open mind and good ole fashioned COMMON SENSE create a better today .... and TOMORROW!

There's plenty of culpability to go around, IMO. The farther to the Right you go, you eventually land (and we HAVE now, it's official) in "fascist/authoritarian/autocrat"-ville. The farther Left you go you wind up in "Anarchy-land". The ugly truth that we're going to have to face (sooner or later) is in authoritarian, plutocratic autocracies, the economic engine that creates the "wealth/potential prosperity" is ideologically irrelevant, apart from turning we, the economically under-endowed against each other. As long as the autocrats get to scrape the vast statistical majority off of the top for themselves, there's not much difference. The Europeans have run these changes down back during the last Century. We're the ones who can't tell the difference between our (extreme) Left and (extreme) Right. The common-sense middle is being systematically (and most of all economically) hunted to extinction by both extremes and I have NEVER felt more politically disenfranchised than I do at this exact moment. But I don't blame the system as much as I blame the auctioning off of it to the private sector one cynical Supreme Court decision at a time starting at the turn of this century. But again, there are no privileged reference points. We can all see a piece of the truth, but at this point, the truth is so complex it's difficult to see it in its entirety. We're like the blind Chinese guys grabbing different parts of the elephant. We're not blind, but we're spending a lot of cognitive processing power trying to keep the B.S. chopped down to a manageable minimum.
